Ok so at the gym today there was this woman on the arc trainer next to me just straight killin' it. She was overweight, but clearly determined and bustin' some *kitten*. We both got off the machines at the same time. I wanted to straight up give her a big ol' high-five, but instead just smiled....
I held back cuz I didn't know if that sort of thing would be weird or interpreted as condescending somehow, since she was a complete stranger to me...
I dunno. Opinions? lol I feel so good during/after my workouts I wanna share the enthusiasm, but I don't wanna creep people out either!

Too funny, I can definitely imagine feeling the same way. Maybe something in between like saying,"awesome push at the end there..."0
-
haha i can totally picture you with your spandex shorts and sweat hair band going around the gym giving overly enthuastic high fives.
Love it!!
And me personally wouldn't be weirded out by that...0 -
You enthusiasm and excitement for you and her is awesome! Maybe give her a high 5 then kinda give her a back story on where you where 10 months ago... You never know, you may get a new workout buddy!! Hahaha0

Not weird I think she would feel appreciated and motivated!0

I've wondered the same thing. There is an obese woman in my gym who has already lost over 100 pounds, and she has no idea how inspirational she is to me. She was kicking butt on the elliptical one day, and I just told her she was doing a great job. I got the impression she appreciated it. I think if more people were encouraging, personable, and passing out high-fives in the gym, others wouldn't be so intimidated to join and keep coming.0

If I see anyone next to me killing it, I usually cath their eye and give them a nod. If I happen to catch them without any headphones, I make it a point to tell them that they're killing it.
But no high fives...people hardly ever wash their hands these days. No way.0 -
I think that a comment like "damn! You really killed it today! That was awesome!" would be a nice gesture.0
-
The fist bump would be a good thing to do. I've done that several times at my gym when I saw someone busting their *kitten*. It really makes them feel good about themselves.0
-
Not weird at all. Who wouldn't want to know that all of their hard work at the gym is not only noticed, but potentially inspiring to someone else?0
-
not weird IMO.. if I was her I would be like ROCK ON this guy is just as pumped as I am!!!0

A smile is perfect! Encouraging words are fantastic! I applaud your desire to encourage her, but I'd vote no "touchie" gym strangers. LOL ...unless you are showering together after...0
-
I would have gave her a highfive,a you go girl and a smile!
but,i'm just that way normally to everyone.0 -

Agreed. Some people get offended or uncomfortable with touching.0 -
Not weird, just say something nice.
I do it all the time at the gym. Itsa great way to meet ppl.0 -
slap her on the rear...good work woman!0

  :laugh:0 -
As long as you smacked me on the *kitten* it would be all good.0
-
I think encouragement and enthusiasm is always welcome!0

Gyms put so many layers between people(TV, etc....), that making contact is viewed as odd.
I would till say something like, "you know how to really use that machine".0 -
Awe... THANKS!!!!! You killed it tooooooo!!!! :flowerforyou:
JK... Wasn't me.
Like others, I think she would have felt good about the encouraging words.0 -
Only if you did it in a real Jim Carey kind of way... But if you did do it in a Jim Carey kind of way, and I was that girl who finished at the same time next to you, I would have high-fived you back, and laughed really hard! And then I would get a Ab workout from laughing too.0

I wouldn't know how to approach the conversation either, but I think she would appreciate it. I know I would if someone said it to me.
That's what tough, some people don't know your story and how far you have come.
I have been at my gym for over a year, and alot of the regulars I attend classes with, and also the gym workers know my story so we compliment eachother, BUT, alot of people don't. Smoetimes I think if people really knew eachother's stories there would be alot more inspiration going on at the gym (haha ok that sounded dorky).
My gym has before/after pics up of people all over the country who have done well. I appraoached them about doing them gym specific, and I would be open to having my pics up. I am much more of an inspiration to someone when they see how far I have come, then when they look at me and wonder why I work out so much (haha ok I am not that hot, but you get my point).0 -
Hmmm ... I'm of two minds. I guess it depends on how you said it. If it was like ... wow i can't believe YOU could work out like that then it might be kind of a downer. When I start an exercise routine my husband does this "wow you're exercising" like it's a shock and it pisses me off so I never want to do it when he's watching. So I started up again and sure enough he came downstairs and let his eyes get wide. I just said, if you're here for something specific then tell me what it is else get the heck out. ha ha
That said, I like congratulations on hard work. Just a fine line, right?0 -
Definitely give encouragement... if you think someone would get weirded out by an actual high five, keep it verbal. I love it when people recognize how hard I work, because I do.0

You deserve a high five, wow! you are an inspiration.0 -
I'm an amateur shooter and when I'm doing an awesome job at the range a smile and nod of the head is always appreciated. I don't like it when people bring too much attention to me. Each person is different. Some like overt displays of attention while others like less public displays. I would go for the more subtle acknowledgement since it's meant to acknowledge that person's accomplishment and not showcase your observation of that persons work. Hope I'm making myself clear.0

Thanks everyone!!! I think next time I will at least say something! :drinker:0

You can't know how people are going to react to you. The girl could be offended, she could be happy that you are cheering her on. All you can do is have good intentions and if you want to give her a high five then do so. If she reacts badly then she just took it the wrong way, you can't control that.0
-
Even if she did think it was weird..sometimes it's fun to know that you weirded someone out and got 'em thinking. And you give her a story to tell: "some chick high fived me at the gym today!"
I personally would love it if I got a high five at the gym. Or anywhere really...0
