I DONT drink Alcohol!

there are loads of us out here - i occasionally enjoy a drink but . I've always been like this and just kind of ignore all the silly questions - i made a bunch of friends at uni who were similar and we had loads of fun without getting caught up in the whole drinking culture yet still were part of the social scene and had a great time. 25 years on i'm still the same tho my relationship did suffer because i was with someone who liked drinking and spent loads of time at the pub with his mates and i would only join occasionally.
I absolutely hate beer, wine's ok and love a cocktail (but enjoy them just as much without the alcohol) but don't just like drinking for the sake of it. i like going out to do things but hate going out to the pub where it revolves around drinking - not because i have any objections or problems with people drinking... i just get so utterly bored. And can't bear the bleh feeling the day after drinking a bit.
And i still have loads of fun!0 -
I drink. I don't question others who don't.
On the flip side, my on alcohol drinking sister will make snippy snide comments when she grocery shopped with me, "Oh look, the alcoholic is buying wine." keeping in mind she doesn't live with me nor does she know my consumption amounts.
Moral of the story, if your friends question why you DO NOT drink they aren't your friends. If your family rags on you because you do drink, they should be kicked in the shins.

I didn't start drinking till I was 25 (the legal age here is 19, but most people sadly start at like 15!), for 10 years I got the "omg you're so lame why don't you drink it's cool blah blah blah..."
At 25 I got drunk for the first time... I'm not gonna lie, it was awesome, but in the past 4 years I have done it MAYBE 5 or 6 times since then.
I have several reasons not to drink: I have no time for it (I work 7 days a week, when do I have time for a hangover???), it's so expensive, it tastes bad, and it makes you fat!
But the reason I give to everyone, and the biggest reason of all, is that my dad is an alcoholic. I was terrified to take a drink, even one, because I was scared to go down the same road. Now I know that I won't, because the only time I consider drinking is at weddings (even then I only drink at about a third of the ones I go to), or when I am away at my cottage with my cousins (a once a year trip). We have alcohol in my house all year and I am never tempted to drink it. Seriously, it does taste bad lol0 -
I personally do not drink alcohol. Simple.
People question me when I go out with friends as to why I am not drinking. "Are you pregnant" "Is it because of religion" "Are you sick" "There must be something wrong with you". NO NO NO & NO.
I am not religious. I am not pregnant. I am not sick and as far as I know there is nothing wrong with me! It has been my personal choice not to drink alcohol simply because I haven't found any drinks that I actually like the taste of!
Are there any other non-alcoholic MFP'ers out there that know how to deal with this social situation? I am just sick to death of people trying to pressure me into drinking because they think it's 'cool' or the fun thing to do. I am 21 and our legal age is 18 here in Aus, and obviously I can make my own choices (because I choose not to drink!)
Basically what I'm asking is, what would be your comeback? I am so tired of explaining myself to everyone I see when we are out. I am quite capable of having a good time without alcohol.
End rant! LOL
The older one gets, the less one cares about what others think, but rather care more about how we think about others. I don't give a sh** about what others think of my food plan...I wouldn't spend much time or energy on it...you are you and "a gentle answer turns away wrath" (very old proverb). I do have one now and then...but only for recreation and relaxation. For the most part...my blender drinks are full of raw veggies, some fruit, and my vegetarian protein supplement...What would Jimmie Buffet think???
Trek on...and great post!0 -
I don't drink either- and when I get asked those stupid questions (I ALWAYS seem to get the 'ooh are you pregnant?" question) I happily tell them all about my fiance's father who is an abusive drunk and has been for 40 years. I give them information about him they really don't want to hear and then they shut up. It works quite well
If he wasn't I wouldn't say it.0 -

Wow. I could have totally written that!
I'm from Australia too. The drinking culture in this country is weird. If you don't drink, there's something wrong with you. I hate that mindset. When I turned 18, I tried the going-out-and-drinking thing, and it just wasn't for me. Some people seem to enjoy it, but I really think a lot are just kidding themselves and doing it because they feel obligated to (because if you don't, you get subjected to the weird looks and Spanish inquisition!). I could tell you my theory on why people in Australia drink so much, but it's long winded and probably boring!
My comeback is usually that I don't need chemical enhancers to be a fun and interesting person - I'm awesome naturally! If you turn it back on them and make them feel like the deficient ones, they usually leave you alone!
Anyway, stay with it. Don't do anything you don't want to do. I'm 30 now, and I've never let anyone pressure me into drinking. And don't be fooled by people telling you that you'll appreciate wine once you're older - still tastes like cat pee to me!
This is so true! I'm Australian as well- I agree our drinking culture is weird! I've had people offer me wine and then get offended when I say no or make some comment about how they are better than me because they like it lol0 -
I'm tempted to stop after the Xmas and NYE I've just had :laugh:0
-
I'm Australian too, 22, and for the most part, I'm not someone that drinks either. I've just had two and a half years completely sober (due to my health, but stopping was beyond easy for me). Before that, I'd only drink if it 'felt' right for my body, and most alcohol tastes rotten-I only had a few I was comfortable with/actually enjoyed. My friends are generally okay with me not drinking-yours should be too(!), but the overall mentality over here does seem to be that something must be wrong, or you're a straight edge fanatic of some sort. I tend to fall into the habit of not really mentioning it if it isn't relevant, I'll order something like a lemon, lime and bitters and people just silently assume there's vodka in it. After so long not tasting anything, I find it really strong and awful. When I'm not intentionally avoiding it, I find things like malilbu/coke or vodka/pineapple or something like sangria aren't too bad; it all depends on tastes though. But really, whatever the reason, don't let people bother you; you're saving yourself a fortune, your liver, and you'll come out of it knowing how to have a good time without needing to be inebriated. I have friends who already rely on a cold drink after a bad day, and I always wonder if that'll be a bad coping mechanism when we're older.0

I am not religious. I am not pregnant. I am not sick and as far as I know there is nothing wrong with me!
this describes me.. and i also don't drink O_O
even though, i have found drinks i like the taste of, but i just prefer not to drink, seems i have no desire for alcohol.
but, i know what you mean by the social aspect of it.. it pisses me off when people assume 'i'm not drinking because i'm trying to lose weight'. obviously, yes, not drinking will help me lose it faster, but, thats not the prime reason why i chose not to.. and people today are just too damn nieve and stubborn to believe that. either that.. or they're just too jealous
either way, tell them to suck it. my decision of not going out on new years eve, and waking up new years morning at 6am to do combat has me feeling a hell of a lot better than those people waking up at 3pm, with a massive, sickening hangover.

I have seen people I know get very sick because of long years of alcoholism and I wouldn't want to go down that path.
That's all you need to say, I guess. People say similar about not wanting to smoke.0 -
I don't drink anymore. It's never done anything but BAD for me. There's no need to make excuses; it's just smart. Life is much easier without alcohol.
I know a lot of athletes who work out so they can drink. In fact there's a nearby track club called "The Thirsty Irish Runners"......THAT'S NUTS!!!
But, hey, being sober lets you enjoy the nuts and doesn't get in the way of your own fitness.0 -
I say "I do drink...iced tea!" That usually shuts them up. Then if they keep at me I say, " I choose not to drink because most people who drink, drink too much and then end up acting like park apes." Then, I give them the "People's Eyebrow" and make them feel like I'm talking about them! It works every time!0

Same here I don't drinki don't like it I hate feeling drunk x0
-
Bumping - because I don't drink and I get sick of the comments too!0

I'm a "never" drinker rather than an "occasional" drinker - my doctor needed to check a box on the computer, I asked for the definitions, he asked me to describe my alcohol consumption, he said "OK, that's classed as never".
I like real ale, good vodka, good lager, and good red wine.
In 2012 I had 10 units of alcohol, including a glass of red wine with Christmas dinner.
3 years ago I went to a big family thing at a restaurant and I asked "why haven't I been offered alcohol?" ... "We just assumed you didn't want any".
I drink alcohol when I fancy it, but asking me if I want some is like asking me if I want a kebab or Indian - in time the assumption changes.0 -
Bourbon for me.
Club soda with a twist of lime if driving.0 -
I don't drink either. I don't go out much though so I can't give any ideas of how to decline.
But yea...even my boss doesn't understand why I am against drinking. He wants to get me to drink?!?! Anyways, he is like...well its not against the Bible even they had alcohol at the last supper.
I just am not interested in it.
And I've tried Wine too but didn't like it.
We don't have to like everything everyone else likes. My dad loves fried potatoes, I don't. I love garlic bread, he says it smells awful. He likes coffee, I don't. I love chicken, he doesn't like the smell of my garlic chicken. We don't always like the same things, even with food.0 -
Alcohol just tastes so.....bad.
It's honestly disgusting...to me that is.
People try to pressure me to drink and want to see me "get drunk one good time."
No I don't want to drink your alcohol.
I will only use it to cook with, end of story.
Also I don't like the way people act during and after consuming it.
And I guess that's why I don't have too many friends.
I can't stand to be around it.0 -
I'm a recovering alcoholic, but I'm not free with that information at gatherings. I've said that I'm allergic to it (metaphorically true) and I've said that I'm under doctor's order. I have also said that my family has a history alcoholism and I've chosen not to test the waters (this is, of course, an outright lie - I have long since and well tested those waters - but strangers don't need to know that.) I've never had anyone push that issue with that explanation.
Claiming to be the DD is also one that works nearly every time.0 -
Are there any other non-alcoholic MFP'ers out there that know how to deal with this social situation?
I don't drink.
But I'm probably not going to be much help. I don't get pressured by anyone to drink. If I'm offered, I just say "No thank you". If they say "Why not?" I say "I don't drink. Thanks for offering". And the conversation stops there.
I don't think you owe anyone any explanation for your choice to not drink.0 -
Question:
Why are you not drinking?
Answers:
I'm the DD.
You asked me the last 7 times. My answer is the same. I just don't like it.
I prefer not to. Now let's talk about religion, sex and politics!
If they insist:
Why do you feel insecure about me making a different choice than you? <turn it back to them, because it's their problem anyway>.0 -
I am religious and I do drink sometimes lol (I believe as long as I am not getting wasted and making horrible choices small doses are ok!)
But neither my husband or I are comfortable drinking outside of our home even if it's just a drink. We both just say no thanks! And if they ask anything like that I take it as it comes. No, not pregnant, not my religion.
If they keep bothering us I just say I don't like the taste.
Thanks Amber.
It's also a health choice - I have seen people I know get very sick because of long years of alcoholism and I wouldn't want to go down that path.
Sooooo.... tell them it's a health choice. If they can't accept that, turn it around and start asking them questions about something they don't want to talk about.0 -
I applaud you for not drinking! I do but I only drink like 4 times a year. I prefer to remain in control of my ability to think and reason, and don't want to get to the point that I don't remember what I do. In my humble opinion, you don't need to justify to anyone why you don't drink. It's none of their business.0
-
Add this to the list of inappropriate and nosey questions people ask. How do they know you are not in recovery or have a family history of alcohol abuse etc? You are under no obligation to explain, but could say "it just makes me tired and i want to enjoy your company"0

Alcohol is good for your organs. Drs recommend women have 2 drinks a week.
Actually there is myth to this... the test performed was on males, it has actually been proven that when WOMEN drink a glass of wine a day it drastically increases chances of breast cancer (i think it was breast cancer at least). You could get the same nutrition from welches grape juice without the negative parts..
Anyway! What I was going to say is I think it is an awesome choice. I am not a big drinker, but do once in a while like wine at Christmas or something. Not weekly or monthly at all. I think mine might be more geared from religion, but it doesn't matter where the choice came from, just that you have that choice. Alcohol ruins people, yeah it can be fun.. but then people get addicted, people die, my dad died from drunk driving, most of my family (not mom and sister, but gma aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) are alcoholics, so I can see how big the negative is compared to the positive. My advice, if you don't want to drink, don't. I think thats awesome. If you decide to, just be safe with it and know when too much is too much so you can still make great decisions. And yeah, I am also 21 (legal), and haven't even been to a bar. Haha, I guess I just feel no need.
Hope you have a wonderful New Years Day!0 -
I'm in my forties. I met my husband when I was 19. Neither of us were big drinkers in college and decided to simply not be drinkers because we wanted a healthy lifestyle. We also noticed that we felt like crap after drinking when we did experiment around the age of 21. Anyhow, long story short--fast forward twenty years--nearly everyone who meets us comments on how young we look. We are certain that a healthy diet and exercise coupled with no drinking is responsible for our preservation. Today I was looking at someone's facebook page and I noticed the quote, "everything you eat or drink either contributes to disease or fights it." I am sure your liver appreciates your decision to spare it a slow, painful death!
You are obviously young, bright, and confident. People attack other people's good choices often because they feel guilty about their own choices. Your fortitude simply is a challenge to them--stay tough and keep it simple--"I only get one body."
Last point--when you drink, your resources are down. Good choice to keep your mind in tact--especially in bars and in social settings. What to drink? My favorite bubbly is actually sparkling mineral water--it has a nice bite that cuts and makes your mouth feel fresh. At fine restaurants, I love asking which type of bubbly water they have--san pelligrino--saratoga--perrier--I actually can appreciate the differences, but I like them all. No sugar, nothing artificial, no alcohol and yet it's something elegant to sip or drink. There is something to having a social drink--holding a drink in your hand while interacting allows us to break up microexpressions in the course of awkward dialogue. It's not about fitting in--it's about having a social tool to address those odd social moments--do it with a lovely glass of bubbly water! Enjoy and Happy New Year!0 -
who are these people you're hanging out with? It seems that if they were your friends, they would know you don't drink and it wouldn't be a big deal. I know people who don't drink and it's not an issue...I've never gone up to them all..."c'mon...have a drink with me." I know they don't drink and they are my friends...why would I pressure and harass my friends to do something they don't like? It seems that we wouldn't be friends for long if I did. I guess I just don't understand why this would be such an issue.0

^^ This! I've never been pressured either way. Maybe it's just your age, and will get better when people start to have better things to do than worry about what you are or are not doing. Maybe get a sparkling water or something else early in the night and carry it around, sipping from it, so no one notices you don't have a drink.0 -
It's not an age thing. I wish you guys would stop saying that. I'm 47. All my friends are the same age and drink like fish.
The reason I have issues is because I used to drink and now I don't. That's why. I don't know why that's so hard to understand. Couple that with close-mindedness, and awkwardness with not knowing what else to do, because all they do is drink. If you're not drinking, it's really friggin boring, and you have the perfect storm of why they hound you, make fun of you, tell you that you need to have moderation in your life, that I workout too much, and now not drinking, and it's getting a little ridiculous. You know, they bascially, are not good friends. So, I'm searching for new ones. Unfortunately, in my search, everyone drinks a lot. Everything revolves around it. It sucks.0 -
