Do New Year's Resolutions work?

I don't smoke anymore. I can't remember how many times I quit before I really quit. I wasn't one of those who couldn't get past the nicotine withdrawal. I'd go several months without smoking, then I'd start back up. Some of those times I quit were New Year's resolutions. The final time I quit was a New Year's resolution five years ago.

I am 37 years old and 305 lbs. I am using myfitnessplan as part of a New Year's resolution. I've tried to lose weight many times before. I would stick to a fitness plan for three or four months, lose weight, feel better, and then lose interest. I'm a pretty geeky guy, so maybe all the bells and whistles of myfitnesspal will help. Right now I am enjoying making the numbers go up and down by eating and exercising. Maybe it will stay fun. Maybe it will become a lifestyle. Maybe I'll screw this up like I've screwed up so many times before.

Winston Churchill has been quoted as saying “Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” I think that is the secret to making New Year's Resolutions work. The simple answer is that they don't work most of the time. Still, since they do work sometimes, I'll resolve again and perhaps this will be the time.

Simple answer; it all comes down to you. You say you're a geek, does that mean that you're into The Walking Dead? I am. And I just have to remind myself of a Daryl Dixon quote 'It's a waste of time, all this hoping and praying.' I've spent enough time sitting around wishing I was in better shape. I'm done being passive, now I'm aggressive :)
  • Hello there, I am a geek myself. I am a medical student in addition to that. I was real heavy before, but hey, I don't put that as an obstacle to lose weight. I believe U can, but then, its all up to you.
New Year Resolution may work to boost your motivation, but more importantly, U need to have something to boost you continously, not just during the burning up calorie process, but thereafter to maintain your weight. Happy New Year and Happy weight losing
