You brought tears to my eyes, as to my husband's after I handed him my laptop to read. He is an avid cyclist, and we just sold his Free Agent BMX bike he raced as a teen in the 80s.
I was in a wheelchair 10-12 yrs ago after an accident and spinal injury. I thought my days on a bike were over. Even after I was able to walk better, I still had extra weight I had gained over the years and no way would my spine ever be able to handle a bike saddle.

But my husband was determined to get me rolling. He found a recumbent 3-wheel at his local bike shop and they let me borrow it for a couple of weeks. The first time I rolled down our street, I couldn't keep the tears from falling.
What an amazing sense of freedom!
Your post took me right back to that moment 4 years ago when I felt the wind in my face, and the feeling of hope.

What a wonderful accomplishment for you! You are reclaiming your life. it is certainly an amazing feeling!

Well done!!! That "maybe" a mile will build into so much more. Never doubt that you can do it, just take it one revolution at a time.

I recently got back on a bike myself for the first time in 14-15 years! Let me tell you it was scary! AND HARD! And hurt my knees... but I could do it and I was really proud of myself. I probably look funny at 300 lbs on a bicycle in a major biking community (we get the pros that train here during the off season) but I don't care!

    GO YOU CONGRATS!

WTG! Good for you, just goes to show , you can do it!!

At 55 yo I too took up bicycling for exercise, due to many physical/health issues that is the only exercise recommended to me by my Specialists.
Well at first I was just like you, then got to a whole 300 metres, with several stops, puffing.....................

Now up to 10-15 klm per day and have done 25 klm to buy cat food!
Now I have joined local group ''Mad Cyclogists'' and so looking forward to social rides of between 20 -100 klm , hey and aren't I proud of me :)

So good luck, keep at it , you are a winner!!

Congrats! I had a variation of a road bike built for me last year, but when I would ride it (once, really) I felt like a circus bear, exactly! That was my thought. I haven't taken it out again, but I got on it in my garage the other day and felt I fit it better. Keep it up!

  • Hey man, I just joined Dec 31st, so I don't know your history (except what's in this post) and really don't know you from Adam. But, your attitude and enthusiasm are inspiring. I can feel them through your words. I can only hope that I have half the determination that you've had, you really give me the feeling that I can do this too!

    Congratulations!

This is so awesome. Good job OP. I haven't ridden a bike other than a stationary bike since I was 12. Perhaps it's time for me to try.
