I searched and couldn't find this on the message boards. I use MFP to count my calories as well as the calories i've burned working out (though i've been slacking lately during holidays lol). I recently started jumping rope and I do 1 minute on, 1 minute off...so my question is, when i put that in my phone should I count it as 10 mins or 20...i personally think 20 because my heart rate is still up during resting times, but i don't want to cheat and end up losing track.

I say better safe than sorry and split it down the middle. count it for 15 If you are still losing weight then you are on the right track...if not, maybe you shouldnt count the "rests"0

I think I just read something about this on lyle mcdonalds site for one of his calorie articles. He pretty much says what only truly counts is actual activity. It explains why people who weight lift don't burn that many calories during a workout because of the long rest periods between sets.
Personally, I would count only the minutes of the actual activity.0 -
I would guess that you should just count the time you are actually Jumping Rope. I'm not sure how MFP figures out how many calories are burned by certain activities.
I'm sure most people would recommend using a heart rate monitor to track your burn, but even that may be inaccurate because, I think, heart rate monitors are most accurate for steady state cardio.
Track it for a couple of weeks, and if you aren't losing weight like you should be, change your estimate, accordingly.0 -

I jog in one minute intervals on the treadmill and walk for about a minute or two in between. I log them separately. Not so much because I'm worried about over-estimating calorie burn, but because that way it'll be easier to see how my jogging improves via the jogging entry itself.0

I jump for 1 min one, 15 secs off, for 20 total intervals. The total time with the rest is 24+ mins. I log it as 24 mins. Now, if I took a full minute off between intervals I might log it differently.
That said, it makes no difference which way you choose. As long as you are consistent in your method you can make the right adjustments. Choose your logging method, track your calories, and weigh yourself once a week. If you're losing weight but incredibly fatigued, add some calories. If you're not losing weight, subtract a few calories. if you're losing your 1 or 2 lbs per week, stay the course.

how or what do you use to time when jumping rope? a stop watch or just approximate?0

When I jump rope I do active rest periods like jumping jacks, high knees, squats, lunges. Brings the heart rate down just enough for another jump rope interval. If that's too much right now march in place. Voila you can count it all.0

My opinion is that cardio should be counted as absolute time. So only the time you actually do the jumping. Besides.. that would push you to do more.. not "cheat" on minutes..0

Calories are burned by the muscles doing work. If you are standing there resting then the muscles are not working. The HR monitor doesn't know you stopped working because HR lags work both going up and coming down.0
