Bad to eat pizza?

I ate like more than half a medium cheese pizza from Domino's last night. I looked up the nutrition on the Domino's website and MFP, and it said it was 170 calories and 5-6 grams of fat per slice. I think I had like.... five slices. I put it in my food log, and it was in my calorie and fat gram goals (Because I had been in a hurry that day, skipped breakfast, and had like a 250 calorie lunch.) And even if the fat grams and calories aren't quite correct, I actually had a few calories leftover.

Is it bad to eat pizza even when it fits in your calorie and fat gram goals? I mean, I just had a another slice 30 minutes ago for a snack, because I was once again in a hurry, and forgot all my other snacks for the day. :( Log says I'm fine, but it kind of makes me feel guilty. Freaking out here.

EDIT: Oh! And I did exercise yesterday, so if the pizza was more than I expected, I'm sure I had even more calories to play with (even though I don't normally eat my extra calories.)

It's not bad! It's calories/fat/protien/salt etc. just like any other food.

Does it provide the best overall nutrients for your body? Probably not, and I wouldn't recommend eating it EVERY day exclusively, but otherwise...why not?

No, it's not bad to eat pizza...maybe not 5 slices though. ;) As long as you can fit it in, it is fine, just remember there is not much nutrition in it, so it might not be a great thing to eat all of the time.

I eat pizza probably once a week, maybe 2 slices and a salad with it.

Papa Murphy's has really good DeLite pizzas. I get the veggie supreme with no cheese and can eat half the pizza and still be under on my calorie goals. When I'm craving pizza, that's what I get!

I wouldn't normally eat 5 slices on my diet. :) I was just really, really, really under my calorie goal yesterday... like by more than 1200.

Thanks guys. Fingernail-biting-nervous about that stupid pizza. Still have to go shopping, I'm getting sick of junk food!

Pizza isn't the worst thing. Although, I recommend making your own. It may take longer but it probably won't be as greasy. Add tons of veggies on it to get some nutrition...spinach, tomatoes, olives, green peppers. You could also add mushrooms and some slices of chicken too. Always use a thin crust (whole wheat/grain if your grocery store has it) and that will cut down on calories also.

I think it's OK, but I love pizza! Seriously, if it fits within your nutritional guidelines that I believe you are OK as long as you don't make it a habit or your main source of calories. You really shouldn't skip meals. Eat regularly so that you burn calories all day long. No for some fat free ice cream for dessert. :-)

Pizza hut also has new light pizza's that I have heard are really good. I also wouldn't eat 5 slices but maybe indulge in the pizza occasionally but start off with a large salad and glass of water.

Funny you should ask, I had a slice of thin crust spinach alfredo for breakfast.

Yeh, I know it's not the best thing ever. But I am a pizza nut. And so is my husband. So every now and then as a treat we get some. Usually a thin crust, lately all veggie. Comes in at around 220 a slice. Definitely doable. It's not a significant part of my diet, but it's yummy and if I can fit it in every now and then.... why not?

Watch the sodium, though, as with most packaged foods. I eat my pizza with lots of water these days and NEVER before a weigh-in!

We eat pizza at least once a week and I have still managed to drop the weight. Remember, this is a lifestyle change, not diet. And pizza, for some of us, is a staple. Like other posters have said, get some veggies on there. I love the Papa Murphy Delites! I usually get one of the grilled chicken varieties.

I think it's okay in moderation...prob not 5 slices if you are looking to lose weight! I usually limit myself to 2 slices. It may be okay in the calories, but the fat and sodium will be outrageous and will not be conducive to weight loss. I'm sure you aren't going to eat 5 slices a day though, so you're okay :)

Pizza is fine. Next time, you might want to get the veggie one. It will cut down on the amount of cheese and fat from the cheese. Plus you get benefit of having some veggies. As others have said, I wouldn't eat 5 slices. Maybe one or two or buy an individual frozen pizza. If you do get take out pizza, take what you need and freeze the rest. You won't be as tempted to sit there and continue to eat most of the pizza.

    Will do! Thanks everybody.

And actually the sodium levels were in my goal too.

And I will never skip breakfast again! EVER! And will start making more time to prepare my lunch, so that I don't feel like I have to get in more than 1000 calories for supper again. :) So, no, definitely will not be having pizza everyday. Not even every month.

Really, yesterday wasn't anything like normal, but I was still worried. Pizza just seems like a no-no when you're on a diet.

Holy cow, I had no idea Papa Murphys are so good calorie-wise! My parents always got the stuffed ones, so whenever I see a Papa Murphys I always just thought "Sigh... oh well."

Gonna have to try these... on my next "pizza treat" weekend.

The only thing to worry about is the sodium. Cheese has a lot and too much sodium can cause you to retain water.

But it's not like our body has a list of "bad" and "good" foods and when you eat something on the "bad" list, all the calories immediately go to your waist (or hips or thighs) even if you need them for energy and all good foods never cause you to gain weight.

It really is, at it's simplest form, calories in vs. calories out. If you burn 2000 calories and you eat 1500 calories, you lose weight no matter where those calories come from. If you eat 2500 calories, you gain weight even if those calories are from 100% organic source made of the healthiest ingredients.

Eating healthy is like exercise -- it's purpose it to improve your overall health regardless of what it does for your weight loss.

Ok... so starting with this comment:
    1. Did you ever hear about a skinny person becoming obese by eating 5 slices of pizza? :noway:
    2. Did you ever hear of a fat person gaining 5 lbs from eating 5 slices of pizza? :grumble:

Are you understanding the whole long term (a.k.a. lifelong) lifestyle change thing?
Remember... you didn't get here throughone day, one week or one month of bad decisions... but a history of bad decisions. It will take a history of good decisions to get you where you are going.

Likewise, one "bad" decision will not condemn you to failure. Look around the boards and you will see people talking about "cheat" days everywhere. I will give you one guess where my "cheat" meal is... a local pizza buffet. Yup... not only do I indulge, but I allow myself to overindulge. I have done it twice this year: once when I hit 20 lbs lost, and once because "it was time."

So, don't go nail-biting and feeling guilty from your lapse into the wonderful splendor of the heavenly dough, sauce and cheese. Just look at it objectively, determine if you want to make a habit of it, and move on.

Now, on a completely different vein... (I must self identify as a pizza FREAK... I can, and have eaten pizza for more than 3 meals a day... and loved every second of it)

I would say that pizza should be relegated to the "treat" category. There are several nutritional flags that should be raised with pizza.

First the crust. The crust is the calorie engine for pizza. My wife and I searched high and low trying to find pizza dough recipes that would minimize the caloric damage. It was tough, but there are some out there that are "the lesser of two evils." Next comes the sodium levels. Pizza is a sodium nightmare, and there is plenty of info on here about the dietary concerns of sodium. Finally, there is the fat contents. If you think restaurants use low fat or fat free cheese, you are fooling yourself. So, from a purely nutritional level, I would say pizza should always be used as a treat.

I would suggest watching the Jamie Oliver Food Revolution to learn about the benefits of fresh cooked meals, and avoiding all as much processed food as possible. I learned this lesson independently when I tried tackling my sodium levels. Basically speaking, fresh ingredients are healthier than processed. And 99.9% of restaurant and fast food is processed.

The junk food and other processed foods are going to be the low hanging fruit in your fitness goals. Pick those fruit first, since they will be the easiest to take care of.

Thanks MacM she brings up the point that pizza has a ton of salt , so hold onto your water bags for a bit , if i have a slice for lunch it will be fresh mozzarella and tomato slice , if your really serious about the weight loss dont eat 5 slices , if its the only thing to eat have a slice and if your still hungry 20 minutes after you eat that slice then have another. Try not to buch up your calories in one meal you will also stretch out your stomach and you will be hungrier during your next meals.

It's better to make your own. With the right ingredients you can get super healthy, save money, taste just like chain and only half the calories!

In fact, I'm having Hawaiian Pizza (canadian bacon & pineapple) on Saturday. It's just under 800 calories for half of a giant homemade pizza! Feel free to check my diary out.
  • I love Johnny's Pizza, and I treat myself to cheese slices now and then. It totally fits in my calorie limits, and I don't think it is BAD as some things COULD be. It is very thin, and it does not seem nearly as greasy as other pizza places. Would I eat it every day? No. I don't deprive myself of anything, though. I always find when I do, I want it more and end up realllllly splurging.

I just made my own homemade pizza tonight! Got a dough ball from Kroger, spread a little sauce, bell pepper, mushrooms, onions, and pepperoni and baked it up. It was 350 cals with fresh ingredients and I knew what exactly was in it. I am all about making over my fave take-out foods. Delish!

SO here's my random pizza questin.....When I eat pizza I take all the cheese off and just eat the bread/sauce. How do I enter that calorie-wise???? I'm guessing that the cheese has quite a bit of fat and calories......just not sure what to put.

I eat whatever I want 1 day a week. I can't give up bad food entirely. It really hasn't kept me from losing weight at all. You probably shouldn't eat pizza every day though. It's not the healthiest choice. It's kind of like the people who eat fast food every day and stay within their calories but don't really lose anything because they're taking in far too much sodium and fat.
  • It isn't the best to have all the time but it won't kill you. I am in a tough spot too. I have had breakfast and lunch today and my net calorie intake is 501 and my dad is bringing home pizza tonight eel. It'll be hard but I'll exercise

I tend to go for shop bought pizzas now rather than takeaway. The calorie and fat content is a lot less.

    Saying "pizza" isn't enough information.
Cheese Pizza is actually a very balanced meal.
When you add sausage and meatballs things get crazy.
Also, 5 slices are probably too much unless it is some kind of tiny and thin pizza.
When we make pizza in our pizza oven the pieces are very thin, so I might have fixe of those.
