I have severe PCOS but have previously managed to lose 98lbs with Weight Watchers. I then went on to have 3 babies in 4 years, and somewhere along the line I stopped watching what I ate, stopped taking care of myself and piled most of the weight back on.
6 weeks ago I started back here. My youngest is now 9 months old and it's about time I regained control of my body. I have so far lost 21lbs in those 6 weeks. I am following a strict 1350cal healthy diet and swim 1km every day (except Saturday as that's my rest day).
It can be done!!0 -
I also lost 34lbs and I have PCOS. My weight loss was slow for me, 34lbs in 7 months. Even my trainer said I could have lost more and is still would have been healthy. It is possible, for some its slower, but you can do it. I have gained about 28lbs back, I am currently working on loosing again and this time I will reach my goal. You got this.0

It is difficult. If you take metformin it can help. I have PCOS and adrenal fatigue...I feel so doomed but it is possible. I did lose 43 pounds at one point. I have gained back 13 pounds back and so here I am...back at it!!0

It took me years to realize that my metformin was what was making me tired ALL the time. The doctors act like Im crazy but when I stopped my energy came back0

Hi everyone! I also hace PCOS and PKD and am stuggling with losing weight. For me it comes off slow but i know it can be done! Good Luck!0

I started my journey with all the symptoms of PCOS but was never diagnosed. Don't look at your medical conditions as hindrances because if you want it bad enough and are willing to do EVERYTHING that it takes to over come the obstacle you can. I have lost 70lbs and overcome it!0

I have lost more than 20 lbs over the past year with PCOS, and the symptoms really do let up as you lose weight.
What's incredibly frustrating about it is the incredibly slow progress. I've experimented with carb grams and found that I do best when I limit carbs to around 100g a day and full the rest of my calories with healthy fats and plenty of lean protein.
Lifting heavy things and doing short bursts of intense cardio has helped transform my body faster than the lbs lost would suggest.
Good luck!0 -
I have been on here since the beginning of Dec. I took a low dose of Phetermine the 1st 4 days, but not after that. I have severe PCOS and Hypothyroid. However, with a strict meal program of 1200cal/day and 20-30 carbs (lean protiens) I have been able to drop 25lbs. The 1st week I wanted to jumpstart my body and only did 900 cal and 11 g carbs. I only did that to wake it up. Either way, good luck. Every body on here is different and reacts different.0

I have PCOS and am here to loose 140lbs...within the last year I have gained 80lbs and cant stand it any longer...it is very hard ...I just started Jan 1 and have lost 4.2lbs so far.. .. I have several of the PCOS symptoms right now. Feeling tired all the time sure does make it hard to get up and exercise but you can do it...
Would love any support especially from woman who know what its like to have to suffer with PCOS..
Feel free to add me
You encourage me and I will encourage you!!0 -
I've been diagnosed with PCOS and recently have been put on metformin. I do find it slightly harder to lose weight but as other factors have made it harder it's hard for me to determine how much of that is down to PCOS.
That being said I have steadily lost weight over the last year. I think the best thing to do is not to think about it, concentrate on your own weight loss and don't worry if others lose quicker although I know it can be frustrating it is possible.0 -
I cut the carbs 3 years ago but since last year, I eat Kamut Bread and brown rice pastas (once every two week). I have noticed that wheat is not good for me. I haven't been test for allergy but I feel better when I don't eat wheat. Last year I also cut all medication my doctor was giving me. Wasn't feeling good, no improvement at all! I found a natoropathic product that helped me with the pelvic pain I had 24/24 7/7. Don't have the pain anymore!!!!
My first goal is 50 pounds.
PCOS is a not easy to deal with (fatigue, hormones rollercoaster) and I know this will be a challenge but we'll do it together, 1 day at a time!
p.s. sorry... my english is not perfect... I'm a french canadian!0 -
I have PCOS and no periods... it's been like that for about 5 years now (I'm currently 286lbs and the periods stopped as I gained weight, becoming over 215 lbs)
I'm happy to report that I lost 6 pounds my first week watching what I ate... and I know it sounds crazy, but I feel like I'm starting to have menstrual cramps and might start soon - could be the changes in my diet or exercise but I couldn't be happier!
It is possible, just may take more time than "normal" people. I can't wait to lose more!!
Would love to hear more success stories!0 -
I have done it with PCOS and I'm doing it. It truely is a life style change for me I can't let my guard down. I can't eat more then 900 calories if I want to loose weight and I found I can NOT eat potatoes. I work out at least 30 min a day also. It can be done!!! It is extremely HARD!!! BUT YOU CAN DO IT!!! I have lost a total of 45 pounds from my high! I am so happy about it! If anyone would like to friend me please do!0

PCOS (diagnosed over 20 yrs ago now - YIKES) and hypothyroid. Metformin, calorie restriction, and OODLES of exercise helped me. Low GI diet didn't, so I don't restrict my carbs. I've been on the Met for at least 12 years but weight loss didn't start until I restricted calories and started working out.
I am definitely in the "slow loser" category, but that's OK.0 -
Diagnosed with PCOS 10 years ago, I'm also 22. I have been on Metformin, birth control, and estrogen. Nothing worked for losing weight, my hormones were out of whack.
Paleo works for me. A common misconception is that it's just like Atkins, low carb-high protein. It's gluten-free (to low-gluten, whatever you can handle), dairy free and processed food free. I have mine sent to 50% fat, 25% carb, 25% protein and am losing about 1lb per day with small amounts of cardio (10 minutes 2x/wk) and weight training (45 minutes 2x/wk). It doesn't work for some, but it helps with my PCOS tremendously.
I would suggest it to anyone, but won't advocate if your body can't handle it.0 -

I hope you meant 1 lb per WEEK? 1 lb per day is a LOT. But I could never give up dairy. Mmmm.....0 -
I was diagnosed at the age of 16 this is the first time I have ever been a size 12/14 (26lbs away to my lowest weight)so this site def works, but because of PCOS I have to work even harder to work my mid section.Good luck doll0

I have PCOS, and if i take the meds prescribed (metformin and BC) I have much better results trying to lose weight than if i don't. To that end, haven't been on the metformin in several months (it's hard to remember to take it, as I am hypoglycemic and I think i have a mental block against it), so I am looking forward to seeing if that is still the case when i start up again.
feel free to add me anyone who wants PCOS buddies and we can share our struggles, journies, successes etc0 -
I have severe PCOS and Insulin Resistance and while I have lost weight, it has been slow and very hard.. 43 pounds since February. I stopped taking Metformin after my hysterectomy because it made me so sick, so I am doing this medication free (with the exception of vitamins).
I would glad accept friend request from fellow PCOS'ers0 -
I have PCOS only medication I am on is spironolact for the acne.
Since joining this site I have lost almost 60 Lbs, I am almost positive I have insulin resistance and after trying a crazy amount of regular diets my doctor put me on a low carb diet. I keep my carbs between 20-50 on foods like creamer for my coffee etc. I allow myself as much salad and veggies as I want and dont keep track of those carbs !
I do however stay away from fruit currently since most of the fruit I eat is very high in carbs/sugar and I havent figured out if its to much for my body to handle currenlty. I have read/told by my doctor that insulin resistance usually goes with Pcos and the hope is once I get down to a "normal" weight I can bring back more food items and see what exactly I can/cant eat.0 -
I have PCOS as well.. and the only thing that worked for me was the Belly Fat Cure. I lost 3 inches off my waist in 2 weeks and had a normal period at the beginning of week 3 (I hadnt had a regular period for over 1.5 yrs by that time).. and well then I went to the Bahamas and it just went down the drain. I am desperately trying to have kids but with a kinked left tube (ectopic) and PCOS Ive had no luck. Ive been through 6 IUI's and a cancelled IVF due to lack of ovarian response to Gonal F. I know that if I lose the weight I can concieve on my own and thats something I want to do to prove it to myself thats its not impossible!!
Im starting back on the Belly Fat Cure again and since it was the ONLY program that worked for me its exactly what Im going to do. I was eating between 1200-1500 calories per day and didnt really exercise.. however, now I'll be burning some fat walking/running while I diet -
I'd love to get to know fellow PCOS'ers!

Hello all same story here PCOS and insulin resistance. I haven't taken metformin in years since I ate bad foods they would always just go right through me on the meds. eating right and working out for almost 7 months now, hoping to hit 70pds in 7 months.0

I have severe PCOS and insulin resistance i had tried many other things to get me to lose weight especially now that am married and wanting to start a family, but nothing worked last Nov. I had an ectopic and that made me realize that I needed to do something but couldn't find out what, then i was told about Isagenix and it has done wonders for me. with in the first week i was off my insulin and all the diabetic meds my sugars are now steady, it such a great feeling being able to eat a meal and not worry about how much insulin you are going to need
i had stopped taking metformin but my dr told me that it can help conceive and now i take a low dose of it all the other meds are also being monitored to see what might need to change, i also did a cycle of clomid since I don't have periods and don't ovulate on my own (i did ovulate on it) but after I lost 15 lbs my first month we made the decision that we wanted to wait a little longer until i lost more weight but last month I ovulated on my own and had a period so am happy that things are getting somewhere.
feel free to add me am always looking for friends like the other above have said it is harder but it can be done you just have to set your mind to it good luck0 -
I find if I work twice as hard I lose half as much as someone else might. I lost 80 lbs in my first year on mfp, had a baby 3 months ago and I'm back on board
Follow your calories
Exercise till you can't anymore0 -
I have PCOS. I was diagnosed about 15 years ago. The only thing that has ever worked for me to lose weight was cutting out carbs and processed foods and a f*$kload of exercise. I kept the weight off for years. But when I stopped running 4-5xs a week because my hips were hurting. I started gaining weight (on average about 10-15lbs a year). I tried to see an endocrinologist because I wasn't really eating that much, but he basically made me feel like a fat pig that was looking for an excuse.
I used to take Metformin but honestly, I didn't really see a difference and still had whacked menstrual cycles even while taking Met and being a normal weight. I actually got pregnant at my higher weight and weighed about 200lbs when I found out I was 8 weeks pregnant.
Gained 25lbs and had hypothroidism while pregnant and have been struggling with taking the baby weight off ever since.
My weight has basically stayed between 210-219 for the last 16 months, no matter how hard I try. Finally I have had it and decided to log my food and exercise like a madwoman again.0 -
In 2012, I lost 26 lbs, an average of .5 lb per week, which was more often no weight loss for weeks then a few punds loss. It was/is tough, but, imo, the keys to success are monitoring intake, exercising hard, and increasing protein/lowering carbs (I'm Paleo with a fairly strict range of macros). Even with all that, the weight comes off in its own time, haha.
I have not been diagnosed with PCOS because I do not have cysts, an irregular period, or diabetes, but I have other symptoms including carrying most of my fat abdominally, wide shoulders, acne, excess hair, and oily skin. All of which I argued prove I do, but to no end as my GP and Gyn just answer with lose weight and all will be OK. At this point, I'm just getting it done. I dont care how long it takes. Each week I feel my body getting stronger and I hope each pound lost puts distance between myself and the worst of the symptoms. <--The most amazing benefit. )
For those on the same journey, feel free to add me.0 -
Hi ladies :-)
I have PCOS too. I am at the start of my journey so can't offer much advice but find like other PCOS people that carbs are my enemy, I love them so this is very unfortunate!
I have read the book The Ultimate PCOS Handbook: Lose weight, boost fertility, clear skin and restore self-esteem by Collette Harris and Theresa Cheung. I found it really helpful, I need to dig my copy out actually. It's always good to refer back to.
I will be sure to follow this thread as will be interesting to hear other stories :0)0 -
<snip>... I do not have cysts, an irregular period, or diabetes, but I have other symptoms including carrying most of my fat abdominally, wide shoulders, acne, excess hair, and oily skin.
This is my story as well. I lost 45+ lbs last year before being diagnosed in September. My diagnosis was spurred by my A1C and cholesterol levels skyrocketing as a result of that weight loss. My GP sent me to a metabolic specialist as a result, and he diagnosed me with PCOS/Insulin Resistence. The weight loss continued until my "December of Excess 2012".
Since getting back to my exercise program and getting my eating back on track at the beginning of this week, I've dropped 1/2 of the 3 lbs. that I gained.
I truly believe exercise is the biggest piece of the puzzle. I started with walking 10 minutes at a time, a couple of times per day. Every little bit truly does help.0 -
I am new to the site and have also been diagnosed with PCOS i have it for about 2 years but only got diagnosed in November last year. In the 2 years i had it i put on about 3 stone so its my goal to loose this and another 2 stone.
I see from some post below that you were all prescribed metaformin - i had asked my doctor for this but he advised he wouldnt give me this until i lost some weight as its proven to work better for those who are on their way down with the weight. Did anyone else have this problem ?
When i had went to see him i had been sticking to a strickt intake of 1500 calories a day and doing intense cardio etc 3 times a week from July 2011 and hadnt lost 1lb in the 4 months !! its all very frustrating ! so thought i would give this a try think it really helps that you can have a food diary and add in your excercise.
Anyone with PCOS have any good suggestions on how to kick start my weight loss as i really want to give metaformin a go?0 -
I have PCOS and I am gluten intolerant. Until I had my son I was very small. I did this fro a little while last year then forgot and I'm in it for the long haul this year. Metaformin made me too tired to do anything. BC pills help a little, I'm trying to go through all the steps to get a hysterectomy now.
I was diagnosed at 14 with PCOS. It's been a life time battle, CARBS are the enemy if you eat them only eat complex ones (I say that knowing full well I am also drinking a Dr. Pepper for breakfast) easier said than done!0
