YOu need to talk to your consultant, I am waiting for my disk to be fused but am currently doing 30DS (it's about the only thing apart from walking that I can do) I have to adapt some of the stomach exercises but apart from that as long as I wear good trainiers it's all good, BUT Check with the consultant first!0

First thing to emphasise is that you should consult with your back care professional before starting a new exercise regime.
I have 3 severely damaged / degenerated lumbar discs due to multiple disc prolapses over the years.
I've found I can do controlled movements (such as weight training, cycling, elliptical, abs crunches, planks and sit-ups) but unexpected movements are more likely to result in a tear of the fibrous capsule of the disc. As an example I can normally run on a treadmill but running outside on uneven ground is very hazardous. I'm much more likely to hurt myself tripping up a small step than exercising hard in a controlled environment. I also avoid exercises that compress the spine - deadlifts, weighted squats - as these cause issues for me.
Strong core muscles are very important - strength exercises (body weight or free weight), planks etc. Many people find Yoga or Pilates very helpful.

I had a disc burst on me a few years ago and now I have issues with my back all the time. I did have surgery to replace the disc but my problems will last a life time. The only advice I can give you is listen to your body. If your back is sore, stop training. I do 30 days shred at the moment and I'm doing Davina DVD's as well. If my back starts to hurt, I rest for a couple of days and get back on it after I feel up to it.
When my back is hurting, I do still exercise. I either swim or stand with my legs hip width apart, knees bent and throw punches for as long as I can stand to do it. That way my back isn't doing much and I am still getting my heart rate up. Hope this helps.0 -
I've had long term issues with my back, since I was 18 (now 47) I have been doing 30DS and enjoying the work out, I found if I used 2.2lb weights my back was ok, I tried heavier ones and I had a lot of problems for the next few days. I tend to modify the exercises anyway, and found level 2 much more back friendly. Like you, I mainly get exercise from walking, which actually helps my back heal when it is particularly bad.
Good luck with it and don't push yourself too much, if it hurts, then slow it down.0 -
I have a problem with my lower back and the doctor has told me to take 30 days off of doing anything high impact and give my back a chance to calm down and get better with some therapy.0

For me the condition definitely improves when I do sports and gets worse if I just sit around.
I am not allowed to skate - but I ski, bike and run and its always better when I do something.0 -
Thanks for all your replies. My PT had advised aGainst any new exercise until I strengthen the core. I guess i should focus on that along with modifying the 30 ds. Where do i get the info on back friendly exercises? Scouring the web is sometimes not as helpful as getting siggestions.
Thanks again !0 -
Get your PT to show you how to exercise using a gym ball (a.k.a. Swiss ball).
It really get the core muscles working.0 -
I agree with the other posters getting medical clearance is the 1rst step for sure
I have had disk issue for around 10 years and with the help of my chiropractor I now run and do programs like 30 DS. My advise is to take it slow and modify where you need to. It takes time to know how your condition will react to certain moves listen to your body. Best of luck.0
