Stressed About 1st Weigh In.......

Tomorrow will be day 7 of my diet and my membership with MFP. That means my first weigh in. Ughhh. I was mortified last week when I got on the scale and saw a number that I had not seen in years. Anyway, I've been good this week with food intake, but only started exercising 2 days ago.

If the scale doesn't show something good, I am afraid I will loose my motivation.

Anyone else hate weighing in???

We all do. That's why we're here.

As for losing motivation... you're going to have down weeks. Weeks where you ate right, exercised, and were good and lost virtually nothing or gain a pound or two. It happens and it sucks. Resolve to do as good next week and you can normally average out to where you need to be.

Don't stress about it so much (easy, right).

I had my first weigh-in this morning after starting my diet about a week ago, and I was super nervous! I actually woke up around 6 and couldn't think about anything else, somehow I was convinced I would have gained weight. However, I actually lost 2 pounds and was super happy with the result - when you know you've followed your diet properly, exercised a few times, everything will be fine! And remember ANY progress is still progress, no matter how little!

Then don't weigh in for a few months, if you're doing things correctly, you'll make progress and not need the scale, as the mirror will be enough
  • First off, don't stress the number on the scale! Weigh-ins are a measure of how you are doing, but not the only one. Do you feel better? Do your clothes fit a little better? These, and others, are better measures. Sure, it feels good to see a lower number on the scale. But, the goal is to get healthy and strong, and that can take awhile. Just go with it. You may be in for a pleasant surprise.

You are not a number on a scale. Getting healthy is not just about losing weight. What you choose to put into your body makes a difference in your mental and physical health and longevity on this Earth. If the scale didn't budge so what. Did you exercise? Then you brought more oxygen into your lungs and revved up your body. Did you put healthy food in your body? Then you repaired some of the damage done by eating poorly for years. There are changes taking place in you on a metabolic level. Good for you.

Forget the scale. Put it in a closet and don't take it out for at least a month. There are far too many things that can cause temporary weight fluctuations. Keep doing what you are doing, but don't stress the numbers. See how you look, how your jeans fit, and how you feel.

You don't have to weigh in. There's no penalty phase if you don't. I rarely get weighed anymore and log it even less often. If the numbers bother you then just keep doing what you're doing and forget about the scale.

In my opinion, there is no less meaningful scale number than the first weigh-in, especially if it is only SEVEN DAYS after starting something different. Weigh yourself, record the number (whether it's +10, -10, or something in between), and get back to focusing on what really matters, which is continuing to work at making your new healthy approach a solid habit.

And if it helps to put this in perspective, consider weighing yourself every day (at least for a while). Yes, the numbers will be mostly meaningless, and yes, there's a chance that you'll overreact to them...(which is to say, if you react at all, you're overreacting)...but it's an incredibly effective way to learn just how volatile scale weight is.

Meanwhile, take some measurements and record those...so when the scale ticks you off (and it likely will), you can check your measurements and see that you truly are making progress even when the scale tells you otherwise.

You didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not going to come off overnight. I've been on MFP for over two years and I've only lost 24 of my 80+ total... that's just the way it goes some times.

You could always just put it off and give yourself more time to make progress. I weigh very rarely and I am almost always happy with what I see because I have plenty of time to rack up a loss.
