Protein boost for oatmeal?
I love having oatmeal for breakfast in the morning, but need a boost of protein in it so it sticks with me. I really enjoy adding peanuts, almonds or cashews, but they do have a lot of calories. Was wondering if anyone had other suggestions I could try, possibly a protein powder (never used before) or other ingredient?
Thanks for any ideas!

I often add an egg to a serving of cooked oatmeal.
I cook the oatmeal on the stovetop and when it's cooked I crack an egg in the pot, whisk the egg into the oatmeal, the heat from the oatmeal will cook the egg.
I often make 3-4 servings at a time and keep them in the fridge to reheat.
I also do proatmeal (oatmeal with protein powder). Cook the oatmeal according to package directions and stir in 1/2 - 1 scoop of protein powder.0 -
Never thought of adding an egg!0

I just add whey or hemp protein powder to the oatmeal when I want a protein boost, also to mashed potatoes or other veggies etc. Works great to give the nutrition breakdown you want.0

could also try ground flax seed to make it stay with you.0

I use Robb's egg white protein in my overnight oats. Google for some yummy recipes on overnight oats or go to my instagram for examples krpm1230

I add a half a scoop of protein powder to mine as well I use the UNJURY brand, which is a whey-isolate protein. I use either unflavored or vanilla flavored. If you like a baked oatmeal (think bread pudding consistancy) , go to www.BariatricFoodie.com She has some good recipes for that, as well as good ideas for adding in protein to other foods.0

I do this (add an egg) to regular sweet oatmeal. I also do a savory oatmeal with a little onion, soy sauce, and a bunch of nutritional yeast and top it with a poached or fried egg and some hot sauce. The nooch is cheesy tasting and it's an extra protein boost. My steel cut oatmeal with onion, soy sauce, ground flax, nutritional yeast, and an egg is 358 calories, 24g protein. Sometimes I add spinach too.0 -
I have lots of oatmeal recipes, but this is one of my favorites:
PUMPKIN PIE OATMEAL
1/2 cup oatmeal (cook in water)
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (I use Jay Robb's whey protein powder)
1/4 cup canned pumpkin (I use Farmer's Market Organic Pumpkin)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 pinch of nutmeg
1 pinch of ginger
1 clove (I like to break it open and grind the powder out with my fingers)
3 packets of Splenda
Cook the oatmeal until nearly done...then add all other ingredients and cook until desired consistency, usually 1 minute more or less.
Each bowl has 300 calories, 30g of protein, 36g of carbs, and 3g of fat.0 -

My husband loves my strawberry mousse protein powder with his oatmeal. Sometimes he uses "fuzzy naval" (peachy flavored). I haven't bought banana yet. Sometimes he adds the grapefruit flavor (water added) to his grapefruit juice.0

Re: PUMPKIN PIE OATMEAL
My mouth watered reading about it. Too bad it's above my daily allowable carbs, but I'll keep that one in mind for a special vacation day0 -
Okay, here are some cool 360 calorie pancakes. Well, it makes like 3 so they're 120 each
1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
2 egg whites
splash of skim or soy milk
1/2 tsp baking powder
Cinnamon
Heat the oats with some water in a mixing bowl in the microwave for 90 seconds. Add some milk to cool it a little, or when you put in the whites and protein it will start to cook! Stir in the egg whites and protein powder and mix. Add baking powder and cinnamon.
Makes 1 1/2 cups of batter, so you get 3 good sized pancakes. The oats are 150 cal, the protein 140, the eggs 35, total is 360 with 40 grams of protein and 30 of carbs.
Add half a banana - or some blueberries. I also cut up some apple and microwave it in a mug for a minute to soften it and add that too sometimes...0 -
I have a 1/2 cup of steel cut oatmeal, 2tbsp of peanut butter and a mashed up banana. its about 460 calories.0

I add 1 T of peanut butter and 1 t of unsweetened cocoa. It adds protein, keeps it around 300 calories and taste like a yummy melted peanut butter cup!0

could also try ground flax seed to make it stay with you.
I was gonna say this. It has protein, omega 3s and fiber. Or chia seed is an option too. :-)0 -
I don't understand why no one is just making their oatmeal with skimmed milk? Protein? You got it. And oatmeal made with water tastes like wallpaper paste to me!0
-
I put a tablespoon of omega seed mix in mine, it's 50 calories but 15 mg of protein. Either grind it or put it in before cooking. I've started using oat bran instead of oat meal too. I love my porridge in the morning!0

A bit of Greek yogurt, I like Fage, adds a nice tang and some extra protein!
^^^^ This is good and I make it with skimmed milk as well0 -
3 -4 egg whites0

Wow, thanks for all the great ideas! I have chia seeds and ground flax in my cupboard and forgot that they have protein in them. Duh! I will definitely be trying the egg idea... found some great recipes online as well as the ones you guys posted.
Here are some of the things I do (not all at the same time)
- milk
- butter (not healthy friendly, but tasty)
- nuts of any kind
- peanut butter or almond butter - yummy!
Other things I add just for fun (again, not all at the same time) cinnamon sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, dried cherries, dried cranberries, diced apple.
I've tried the instant (yuck), oldfashioned (my staple) and steel cut (yummy, but a pain to make) oats.
Also cooked up some quinoa for dinner last night, and was thinking that might make a yummy breakfast too.0
