Calories in and calories out

I've been a member on and off for a while. However, I've never really checked out the message boards soooo I have a question. I know everyone is different but in a nut shell can someone help me understand this. I will be eating around 1200-1500 calories a day. When I work out I usually burn between 600-1000 and I try for 5-6 days a week, that's how I lost my first 30lbs. Do I add on and eat that much more? or do I stick to the 1200-1500. Someone please explain and help me understand for optimum weight loss.

    If you're following MFP's system, you should eat back your exercise calories. That is the way it is designed.
  • I've been looking into this too , but basically , you need to find out your bmr . There are website that tell you . And you need to subtract 500 from that . Your bmr changes when you gain or lose weight so you have to change to keep up with it !
  • The way that my fitness pal is set up it adds the calories you burn to the amount of calories you eat a day so if you burn 1000 calories exercising then you would add that 1000 calories to the 1200 calories you eat that day, thus making your eating calories 2200. I hope that this helps you to understand.

    That would be incorrect TDEE =/= BMR

    That's incorrect. You subtract from your TDEE, not your BMR. Your BMR is what a doctor would give you if you were in a coma to keep you alive. You shouldn't be eating below that number.

    It is basically the amount of calories your body burns on a daily basis given your lifestyle.

    Total Daily Energy Expenditure. The amount of calories you burn in a day. Not just from working out, but every little thing you do including bodily functions and digesting.

    Noooooooo.....you're confusing BMR and TDEE. You would subtract 500 from your TDEE. You should at minimum net to your BMR. So if your BMR is 1,500 and that's your goal...and you exercise and burn 500, you would need to eat those back just to net to your BMR. Your TDEE is a higher number. Your BMR is what they would feed you through a tube in the hospital if you were in a coma...it's the very basic calories your body needs for proper organ function.

    i guess if you enter information accurately into this site its pretty mindless but it was spitting out low calorie goals for me. plus i wasn't logging my exercise which i guess changes what you can eat daily on this site?

    i just don't like how they do it. google harris-benedict formula. I find that works better but you have to stick to your excerise plan otherwise the calorie numbers will be off. If you not religious about working out so many days a week, just using the website as its built might be your best bet.
