and when I drink, i ten to get the "drunk munchies" and eat bad.
taco bell and pizza are my #1 cravings lol.
so since this is the first week I ate clean and healthy, anyone have any advice or tips as I transition into the weekend?
thank you!
I love all of you and this website! Thanks for all the support and motivation! I really feel like I am changing and it has only been week one for me of eating better and week 4 of working out!

Just a thought... what would happen if you didn't get loaded this weekend? Your calorie count would be less from the booze, you wouldn't have the drunk munchies, and.... you would remember what you said and who you said it too. Your liver will thank you and you will have a lot less embarrassing pictures in Facebook!!!0

Try packing snacks and taking them with you in your purse. Sounds like a fatty, but man I can't tell you how many times I've avoided making a bad decision this week by pulling an apple or banana or something out of my purse. lol0

I know it's difficult. I found myself not going out at all with my friends because of how much crap I'd end up eating. I just realized that I am not going to NOT hang out with my friends just because there is going to be crappy food and alcohol around. That it is up to me what I allow into my body and that I can say no. I also modify the heck out of food when I go out, and order lite beers and glasses of wines. Being healthy doesn't mean you have to sacrifice going out and being with your friends.. It just means you have to become more disciplined.
I normally ALWAYS have a nutrition bar in my purse on me in case I start feeling hungry (normally a Clif or Luna bar) or some dried fruit or a 100 calorie pack of nuts. all healthy and something I can snack on when I am feeling the urge to snack or actually hungry.0 -
Days that I know I am going over my calorie goal because of drinking I just do more exercise (run). I also have switched my drink of choice from gin and tonics to whiskey on the rocks. Save some calories there but make sure you eat before and try not to get caught in a bar hungry. If you do eat at the bar, try to go for something not as unhealthy. I also would recommend to find alternative recipes for your favorite foods. I love pizza, tacos, etc. too but I have to eat them in moderation. At the end of the day you don't want to be doing all this tracking, exercising only to blow your calorie intake out of the water because you couldn't resist saying no or choosing something less unhealthy. Mistakes will be made but there is always tomorrow to make up!
P.S. Someone posted a good pizza alternative recipe that I loved, you obviously do variations. Multigrain tortilla, tomato sauce (you can make this easy at home fresh or buy), part skim milk mozzerella cheese, and turkey pepperoni0 -
If I know I'm gonna be going out with friends to a bar on the weekend then I volunteer to be the DD and that usually shuts everyone up straight away because :
a) they have a ride
b) since you're driving you obviously can't drink0 -
Limit the amount, just might have to say no and take their **** for awhile. If you really want the calories later, eat small for breakfast and lunch.0
-
I know how you feel. Being at work all day, everything is very regimented. Weekends--that sort of falls apart. If you go out with friends, eat before going out so you're full and satisfied. At least that way, you have total control over what you are eating. Then you can indulge in a couple of drinks with friends.0
-
Why would you waste your calories on alcohol? Seltzer water, diet coke. Look like a drink but leave you with 0 calories and your mind in control. And if your friends are hassling you abut your choices you need to re think your friends. True friends are supportive0

I have the same situation. I feel your pain! I learned to deal with it... I keep some "drunchies" (drunk munchies, get it? ha...) in the house for this reason. I got *grilled* chicken tenders that I can just pop in the microwave instead of some nuggets from McDonalds. I usually dip them in Frank's and plain greek yogurt if I'm coherent enough . Also, I have rice cakes on standby if I'm wanting potato chips.... Fiber One 90 calorie brownies if I want chocolate.... In the event of a taco bell run, I always get a few Fresco Chicken soft tacos. It's a soft taco with chicken, lettuce and pico de gallo. No fried crap or sour cream or anything. If we head to our house to eat, I'll switch out the wraps for lower cal ones I have at home.0

This was seriously the biggest issue for me when I started losing weight. I used to go out and drink probably 500-1000 calories, then hit the drive through late at night and/or the next day, and I'd miss the morning workout I planned cuz I was hungover. It was terrible. The first step is be ready to leave that whole lifestyle and to learn how to have fun without the booze. However... if you plan ahead you can still go out and have a great time. I'm having a girls night today and plan on having a couple glasses of wine, so I'm eating really well during the day and working out before I go out. We're going out to dinner too but I've already looked at the menu online and picked out something on the healthy side.
I really do know exactly what you're going through, and still struggle with it sometimes. Feel free to add me and we can motivate each other to stay on track!0 -

Some advice from a guy who likes to drink and be social with friends, for what it's worth
1. Like someone else said, I changed my drink of choice. I no longer drink beer or any mixed drink with sugary mixers. No gin and tonic or rum and coke. If I want a mixed drink, I have a vodka & club soda with a splash of lime juice. No bad sugary stuff there, vodka is basically empty alcohol calories. Gotta burn those off somehow, but you're not getting all the carbs from beer or sucrose from tonic/coke.
2. Normally I drink wine now when I go out. ANd what I do is get a glass of wine and a glass of water. I do NOT order another glass of wine until I have finished both the wine and the water. Helps you stay hydrated (less water retention issues from the alcohol) and slows your pace way down.
3. When I get munchy, I've found that there are "good" things on the bar menus. Hot wings are way better choice than pizza, for example. You can surely find something on the bar menu that you enjoy that is not pizza, nachos, etc. Sliders is another good choice, compared to pizza or nachos.
Finally, you might consider treating this as an induction phase in to your new lifestyle and not go out and drink with friends for the next few weeks until you have created your new lifestyle habits!
Some things I've learned along the way over the last 7 months that have been successful for me. Your mileage may vary.0 -

LOL @ Drunchies, gonna start using that one if you don't mind lol.0 -

sigh,,,, thats what weekends are for, boozing it up, relax, work your *kitten* off during the week, and loosen up on weekends.0

thank you! that pizza recipe actually sounds really good!!!0 -
There is nothing wrong with enjoying some of the finer things like a few drinks and some Pizza or whatnot.. It comes down to limitations/moderation. I have a meal out once a week normally on Saturday and plan on a couple beers and whatever I want (Pizza, Wings, Ribs, Mexican, etc, etc). I normally eat lighter for Breakfast and Lunch, get in a killer workout before dinner and than head out and enjoy a guilt free evening with my wife... It has worked for my weight loss and there is no depriving yourself.. The only thing I can say for your friends is a little tough love... If they are truly my friends then I only have to tell them Once!! this is my life, this is the way I will be doing it, I am not asking for your permission, only asking for you to respect it!! Period!! and as for my friends they totally understood and the subject was never approached again..... Best of Luck0

I have that problem too, but I did something different last night that I usually don't do. I brought snacks with me in my purse. I brought an orange, almonds, and wasa crackers. I nibbled on all of it throughout the evening, and my stomach did not bug me once! Good luck0

There is lots of good advice on here!!!!!! At the of the day you have to take care of you!!!!0

I feel like this is such a common problem for 20somethings! I've started to move on from my "partying phase" to trying to make better lifestyle choices, but a lot of my good friends are still in the party-party mode, and I don't want to miss out on time with them, but nor do I want to derail my goals! I don't know your drinks of choice, but one thing that's helped me is to opt for a good bourbon, up or on the rocks. I'll sip it more slowly, and still feel like I'm "partaking" but am also less likely to find myself suddenly drunk and making bad food/drink choices. A former co-worker is throwing a party this weekend...I know I'll get side-eye if I stick to water, and that's my "survival plan" -- max of 2 bourbons and an explanation that I'm watching my weight!0

The following advise is from a guy who likes to drink:
Honestly - behaviors are about triggers. Drinking is a trigger for you to eat unhealthy plus you are loading up on a lot of empty calories, not to mention fat metabolism stops when you drink. The only long term route to success for you is to reprogram this trigger. When I first started my journey I didn't drink to at least a month. If I had to stay home to do it, I did. When I did go out I significnatly changed my behavior both in the quantity and quality of what I drank.
Long term fitness is about reprogramming these triggers, which takes a lot of effort up front, but gets easier as time passes.
You're young and should go out with your friends, I suggest you go out and don't drink - just try it this weekend - see how it works. If they give you *kitten*, I'd question if these are really good friends.
If you must drink: Drink hard drinks, watch out for the mixer, limit the amount. Make 1 martin last the night. Eat low fat low cal snacks (raw veggies are great). Your in Seattle there are plenty of places here with good food options:)0 -

just say no!!! its one thing to go out an party once or twice a month, but there is no need to continue sabataging yourself each and every weekend. until you are strong enough to show good willpower and self control, just say no!!!0

I was just always DD. If I got hungry while out, I would get a water or a diet coke. I still am DD most of the time. You can do it. For me, I can ruin a whole week of good eating with one bad weekend. Good luck!
Same for me. I DID ruin many healthy weeks with blowout weekends. Not worth it (in so many ways!). I noticed my progress slowing/stopping because of it and that was enough for me to reel it in and just be the DD for my drunkieface friends.0 -
This makes me laugh, my first conversation with my personal trainer about nutrition was me saying "I'm not giving up beer" and I haven't. I cut back a lot. I try and keep drinking to one night a week and I use the one drink/one water method that someone else mentioned. I enjoy going out an having cocktails with my friends and not something I am willing to give up. What you do has to be sustainable for a lifetime. Not giving it up has worked for me, but I definately cut back. That wasn't too hard for me and I guess if it is, not drinking is probably a better option. I have been very good about skipping the drive throughs on the way home though, for some reason I can really hold my ground there....could not tell you the last time I had taco bell
Two weekends ago I was out with friends for a birthday and they were all drinking wine and beer and I had water. They ordered onion rings and nachos for an appetizer, then pizza for dinner. I had a black bean burger with a side salad. I was good, laughed as much as the rest of them, got a friend and myself home safely and did two fitness classes the next morning. The next weekend, I had the beer and the pizza....still worked out though. So, moderation is key0 -
i try to keep my weekend drinking/eating to once wknd a month...2 if i must.....and workout/eat super healthy a head of time, and dance off all the calories i can...park far away from the bar...burn as much as posible in between scanning my beer cans & logging my calories:) you're redefining a new normal....baby steps....good luck & have fun!0
