Spaghetti squash < 20
This was actually listed as a veggie, so you just use the veggie as a pasta?
Yes. You pierce the squash with a knife a couple times, then either steam it in the microwave or bake it in the oven, cut it in half, scoop out the seeds and then shred it with a fork. It comes out in long noodle like pieces. I like it mixed with pasta to bulk up the meal or you can have it on it's own.0 -
find some whole wheat versions, as long as you eat a serving and load it up with some good veggies and a tomato based sauce, no worries.
i can make a serving of baked ziti easily around 300 calories, using a lot of veggies, low fat mozzarella and low fat ricotta.
spaghetti squash can be a good alternative if you are looking to try an alternative to pasta without all the carbs and calories. i have had it with red sauce and with alfredo, def not spaghetti but it is good with the sauce, add some other veggies or protein on top.
shirataki noodles can be used as a pasta dish, they have a very weird texture though so beware.
honestly though, just measure out a serving of pasta, you can find some servings of 2 oz at 180 or less calories, as long as you add good veggies and don't drown it in a fatty sauce, you should be fine :]0 -
Trader Joe's has these really skinny green beans (in the frozen section) that are delicious with spaghetti sauce on them. I call it my green spaghetti.0

When I have a craving for spaghetti, I will have a Smart Ones Spaghetti with meat sauce (250 calories). Very good and I'm satisfied.0

Pasta Slim. At HyVee it is in the cooler with the organic veggies. It has 40 calories per bag. Or there are Miracle Noodles. Zero calories. They are in the Health Food Market at HyVee (also in a cooler). These are made from a yam product and have NO flavor until you put something into it. I use them all the time for Spaghetti. Rinse them and then dry fry them and you will love them. (They do smell bad when you open them but rinse them and you will be fine.....honest!)
They have so few or zero calories depending on which kind you get that you can use your fav spaghetti sauce, cheese and I use Jimmy Dean Sausage crumbles. They have only 70 calories per 1/2 cup. Then I have garlic bread!!!! Yum!
These noodles have saved me with this diet. I eat them every night in one form or another. Tonight I made a oriental mix with veggies and beef. It is great. Or I have made Alfredo, Mac and Cheese or I use them in soup.
Don't let the smell turn you away. The first time I tried to use them I threw them away. I wasted months before I tried them again and I really do love them.

We have a product here in Australia called "Slim Pasta" its only 11 calories per serve!
I get mine from the health food section at Safeway, it's 11 calories and ZERO carbs. It smells funky so rinse it with very hot water for a long time.0 -
Mmmmmm Spaghetti. Yes one of my faves also. I found the Shirataki noodles. Better known as the miracle noodles. Now i was so on the fence about trying them because of all the things i have heard. Well i am glad I did tried them. I found them at a Japanese market near work. They were 1.99 bag here in AZ. They have a few types of noodles. Fettuccini, garlic and herb fettuccini, angel hair and more. Now i soaked the noodles in a bowl of cold water. I then drained them in a strainer and ran water over them. After a few minutes i do dry the noodles off. Now i did this as i am cooking the sauce. I have made a stir fry with them also.That was killer. Even the people in the office liked them. They do soak up all the flavor of the sauce that you add to it. The only thing is that the noodles are a little chewie. But i don't mind that. I am amazed that they do not have them in more stores. On there miracle noodle website they have great recipes. So if your adventures and like trying new things. I would diffidently give them a try.

Use whole wheat pasta and instead of sauce, make it with garlic, chilli, sliced mushroom, chopped spinach and a little extra virgin olive oil.
If its the spaghetti you crave, that will do it. Adding sugar rich shop bought sauces and beef hype up the calories. Whole wheat pasta will even out your blood sugar levels as its absorbed slowly.0 -
Nothing wrong with getting your pasta fix as long as you measure the serving you eat. Pasta is one of those things that is way too easy to eat if you have an endless supply on your plate.
I eat pasta on a regular basis. I just measure the uncooked 2oz serving of whole wheat pasta and add 1/4 cup sauce. The whole thing is only 235-255 calories depending on the sause. 1/4 coats mine pasta fine but you can do the half cup serving making your meal 270-290. I add some sort of green veggie and 4oz chicken, 4oz of meatballs, or 1 sausage link for 120cal. No matter what the one meal never goes past 500 calories.0 -
I make mine with whole wheat pasta, fat free ground turkey (Jennie-O) and Prego garden medley spaghetti sause. I add in zuchini, bell peppers and mushrooms and a dash of oregano. The entire family loves it.0

Try the health food store and search for some alternative products. Pasta is a bad carb but once and a while is okay - just have a smaller serving and make sure you are eating lots of veggies with it as well as exercising.
Disagree totally, in my opinion. I'd just choose whole grain pasta over "regular" pasta. Tastes just as good to me, even better, actually! Just skip the cream-based sauces and stick to a normal portion (2 oz uncooked) and enjoy! Life would stink without pasta.0 -

I really, really like to use spaghetti squash for my noodles. When you do that, your sauce and any cheese can take up almost all of your dinner calories.

SPAGHETTI SQUASH!
I like it plain with salt and pepper or use it as pasta with tomato sauce and some meat... so yummy0 -
I made Mexican lasagna the other day...I thought it was very yummy..(kids even liked it).
1 pound lean ground beef
1 can (16oz) fat-free refried beans
2 tsp. Dried oregano
1 tsp. Ground cumin
3/4 tsp garlic powder
9 uncooked lasagna noodles
1 jar (16oz) salsa
2 c. Water
1 container Kraft 2% Mexican style cheese
4 oz black olives
1/4 cup thinly sliced green onion
Fat free or light sour cream (optional)
Brown hamburger/drain add beans and seasonings and heat
Place 3 noodles in bottom of 13x9 baking dish (coated with cooking spray)
Cover with half the hamburger mixture
Repeat layers
Top with remaining 3 noodles
Mix the salsa with the water and pour over noddles
cover and bake at 350° for 60-70 mins. Until pasts is tender
Remove sprinkle with olives, cheese, and green onion
return to oven for 3-4 mins...just to melt cheese
Makes 9 big servings
Without sour cream approximately

Oh my, so many great ideas! I've thought about buying the whole wheat pasta because it's my weak spot as well seeing as I have Italian in me. I really like the spaghetti squash idea. I've never done it, so I'm definitely going to try that. I'll try the smallest squash I can find because I'm the only one to eat it in my house. (It's a pain having a mother and son that has a hard time gaining weight...Ironic seeing as I'm obese.)0

I made turkey spaghetti bolognaise last night and it was gorgeous.
Minced lean turkey 500g
2 onions
red and orange pepper
8 mushrooms
1 carrot diced
2 tins of chopped tomatoes
tomato puree
italian mixed herbs
3 cloves of garlic
oregano
whole grain pasta (3/4 of a pack)
low fat cheddar cheese 5g per portion
this makes about 6 portions, low fat, great complex carbs and worked out around 450 cals per portion Used about 6 sprays of oil in frying pan.0 -
STAY AWAY FROM WHEAT PRODUCTS.
It's actually not good for you. Human bodies can't process it well, and it ends up making you binge eat-- because of how the body processes it.
