net calories??

Some of you may think this is kind of a stupid question but im really confused!! my calorie intake should be around 1600 to maintain a healthy rate of weight loss, so should i eat that amount and create my deficit wiith exercise, which usually leaves me with net calories of around the 200-300 mark, or should my net calories be 1600? im really struggling to understand!! thanks for any help you can give ;)
