For sweetening oatmeal I add raisins, blueberries, cinnamon, or sugar free applesauce.
For a non sweet variation, i spinkle a bit of shredded cheese(2 Tablespoons) and/or turkey sausage on top. It may sound gross, but it's similar to wheat bread with breakfast filling.0 -
In regards to milk....I want to get away from it....not completely as I can drink a glass or two as a separate drink. With meals, like cereal for instance, I dont get as full. I will have it, but then I will feel hungry about a couple hours later. I dont know if it is enzymes in it that make things digest faster, but I just dont get enough out of it. Milk has natural sugars in it, so yes it will sweeten the oatmeal. But I am trying to learn how to sweeten creatively, like adding spices, and cuttin up fruits and stuff. And I do not have a microwave (by choice) so I do everything on the stove top.0

No matter what else I put in my oatmeal, I ALWAYS add cinnamon BEFORE I cook it.
Other things add before cooking: Raisins, cranberries, apples
Things I add after cooking: Splenda, honey, sorghum, peaches, blueberries, chunky peanut butter (this one with some Splenda makes it taste like cookie dough)
Something I NEVER add to my oatmeal - MILK
I prepare my oatmeal in the microwave - 1/4 cup oatmeal (old fashioned), 1/2 cup water, cinnamon, Cook 3 minutes @ 50% power0 -
BTW I am LOVING all these posts. I will be taking out pad and pen, and creating an oatmeal recipe book. Yes, I will write down who said it so I can give credit to the good ones! thanks!0

I always add a tiny pinch of salt--it makes everything taste less bland. To my oatmeal I also add vanilla extract, brown sugar/splenda, walnuts or pecans, and plenty of cinnamon. I can't believe how much I like it. I've never really enjoyed it before. :happy:0

i add a tablespoon of justin's chocolate almond butter to my steel cut oats every morning. a serving is two tablespoons but one is usually enough - which is only 3.5 grams of sugar. i take my time scooping just a tiny taste of the almond butter in with each bite. mmmmmmmm.0

I use lots of cinnamon, a dash of ground clove and some ground ginger in my oatmeal. I use 2/3 c of 1% milk. I like the texture better than using water. I have also used ground flax seed in my oatmeal as well as dried cherries. Oatmeal is perfect because you can do just about anything you want with it. I have tried putting protein powder in there but I wasn't a fan....0

Big oatmeal fan Its a Fav for a snack. I use a few things but usually add a small amout of seat salt to bring out the flavor. I have enjoyed vanilla extract, splenda w' cinnamon or a lil sugar-free pancake syrup. You could also warm up some diced fruit (strawberry, apple n cinnamon, blueberry, etc) with a lil splenda to pop the sweetness. Also another thing you could try is agave nectar its has a low glycemic index so is great for diabetics. The main trick I use is extra water! I use plain oatmeal (the big by the scoop kind) but I add double the water and microwave, stir and repeat til it has thickened, if you keep rotating the cook, stir over and over it swells alot and u can make a large amount with the same calories. Also Any baking axtract would work if you are careful on your measuring (otherwise tooo strong of flavor) they make maple, cinnamin, fruits, vannilla, hazelnut, peanut butter, chocolate, and many more! If you pre mixed with some splenda and a lil water you could have it ready to add!
And Of course now I am craving oatmeal...0 -
chocolate covered katie......mmmmm!0 -
Didn't read every post but HONEY... love it0

I always add cinnamon to mine. In addition to that, I love putting warm blueberries on top. Peanut butter and almond butter on top are also great for some added sweetness.0

Okay, I am starting to eat oatmeal (regular, add water, stovetop). I want to find out different ways to noticeably sweeten the oatmeal. I am turned on to oatmeal because I can have as much as a bowl of cereal, but it will fill me up better and for about half the calories. Problem being: it is so BLAND. This morning I tried adding a Valencia orange to it, while it was cooking. The flavor of the oatmeal swallowed the flavor of the orange, with no flavor output. when I ate the orange pieces, I could barely taste them.
I am going to try Cinnamon and splenda next, but what will increase flavor in the oatmeal drastically without adding too much in calories, or sugar content? This is for one regular ceral bowl of oatmeal. Any ideas? My pantry is not that exotic, so please keep it more basic.
P.S. This is W/O the help of a microwave. I choose not to have one. helps with consumation control (effort is needed to make the food, so less is consumed)
Greek yogurt:) also try different protein powders! Many days, I like a fruity greek yogurt with some berries in my oatmeal. If you want something a bit more subtle, try vanilla soymilk0 -
Just cook it with MILK instead of water! Makes all the difference and you get nutrients from the milk too - BONUS:drinker:0

i use sugar-free maple syrup.........but peanut butter sounds fantastic. Now I'm hungry0

I try to use honey, nuts, bananas, and different types berries....This can really change the taste of any oatmeal.....0

Blueberries are one of my favorite things to add to oatmeal.Another one I do is mix unsweetened applesauce and cinnamon and a little maple syrup and it taste kinda like healthy apple pie!0

Back when I ate oatmeal, I preferred steel cut oats. I would first toast them in a bit of (real) butter, then cooked them. Add salt when cooking. Add butter. I liked to add various things in whatever combination sounded good at the time: apples, blueberries, half a banana, cinnamon, vanilla, almonds, raisins, dried cranberries, dried fruit/berries of any sort. I tried to use as little sweetner as possible, but I liked brown sugar and honey for that. Splash of coconut milk or heavy cream over the top.0

I love oatmeal! The best way to sweeten for me is using apples and cinnamon. I peel and cut up a gala apple and steam it on the stove in a small pan i then prepare the oatmeal separately and then put the both items together in a bowl, sprinkle with cinnamon and you are good to go. The apple does add some calories but Its definitely worth it. Any type of dried fruit and nuts is a good combo too. I also like to have butter in mine (the real stuff), not a whole lot, just a small pat and on days when I am out of apples I just opt for a spoon of organic maple syrup and/or brown sugar. I know that people will gasp and swoon about using butter and sugar but I am not partial to the "faux sugars" or margarine. I can eat knock offs of everything accept butter....I digress.....Good luck!0

I always put cinnamon in mine (after it's cooked, I stir it in when it's warm). I usually top with blueberries or strawberries. That said, I've never really felt the need to mask my oatmeal...I pretty much just like it.0

I like my oatmeal (made with water) with sweetener, blueberries, apple and about 10ml of soya milk stirred in0

Banana whipped oatmeal is the best!! I use almond milk to cut down on the calories. Here is a blog and she does a whole tribute to oatmeal and all the yummy toppings she puts in. My favorite is to add 1 tbs of coconut and a crumble a few pecan halves. Oh my goodness...tastes exactly like the topping on german chocolate cake (that is if you like coconut!)
Anyways check out her blog for some inspiration! http://www.katheats.com/kaths-tribute-to-oatmeal0 -

I checked this out and tried out the eggs florentine oatmeal recipe this morning. Though since I didn't have any swiss cheese, I substituted 1/4 cup of reduced fat mexican cheese.
IT WAS FREAKING AMAZING. I never thought i could add spinach and eggs to oatmeal but this was great. Though next time, I'd like to try it with parmesan or swiss instead. Also, the combination of protein and fiber was super filling:-)0
