If so how did you do it? I am currently 38 years old, 145lbs with around 31% fat and want to get to 20% or below. I'm eating just above my BMR at 1500 cals net most days and working out 6 days a week doing a combination of cardio and weights burning off 350-650 through exercise.

I am trying to eat below 100g carbs most days although sometimes its a little higher and at least 120-140g protein but after 5 weeks on MFP not seeing significant results. I used to work out 2-3 days a week doing mainly just cardio before joining MFP and I ate less protein.

I want to start progressing more quickly with the fat loss but not sure if age is against me out if I should be making further changes to what I'm eating like reducing my calories or starting to add supplements to get to where I want to be. At the moment I use protein shakes to try and increase protein intake but I can't afford more than 1 per day and seem to be struggling to eat all the protein I need (goal set to 35%). Most of my carbs are from wholegrains and veggies.

Any tips or success stories will be much appreciated.

  • Hello,

Im 46 now but was 45 once..:o) Add me if you like but you should be able to see my diary anyways.

I've lost quite a significant ammount of weight since i started using mainly a Paleo/Primal type of lifestyle. Im not saying you do this but thats what seems to work for me.

I would up the cardio and start interval or HIIT methods while doing this. It's all down to intensity really, the harder you work the more you burn and i think the secret being you burn more post exercise. (dont quote me on that, it's just what i've seen with myself).

Knock the grains on the head as well.

I'm 43 years old. I started out around 30% body fat, and am currently between 11 and 15%. As long as I stay motivated, I lose weight pretty well. It's the gaining muscle that I struggle with.

I'm 39 and in the last seven months have dropped from 194 pounds and 24% body fat to 169 pounds and 17% body fat.

My success had little to do with macronutrient percentages and everything to do with intense and regular exercise (though you could argue that I needed a lot of carbs to fuel those efforts, I never really paid much attention to them specifically).

Unlike many athletes, I generally avoid supplements and shakes. They are just too expensive for little to no measurable benefit.

My "supplements shelf" includes a generic one-a-day vitamin and a powdered sports drink (Cytomax) that is relatively cheap ($30 for 80 servings) that I selected because it tastes good after being in my bottle for an hour on an 85-degree day.
