To set up your generic fat-loss diet calorie intake, all you need to is take your current body weight in LBS and multiply it by 10 or 12 calories. The number you see is your GUIDELINE maintenance calorie intake. It’s not perfect, like I said, we’re all different. IT’S A GUIDE. So in order to lose weight, at the end of every single day, you’re body needs to be at a caloric DEFICIT. This means you EAT UNDER THE AMOUNT of calories your body needs to maintain itself. SIMPLE. They say around 300-500 calories is recommended. If you do the math, stick to it and apply some exercise, you’ll lose weight.

Seriously? I'm 350lb x 12 - 500 = 3700 calories a day. Thats way way way over what my BMR and even my TDEE are...

Could you please help me set my macro's. I've recently hit my goal weight and I'm now trying to maintain (I'm 5 foot 3 and 117 lbs).

What percentage of fat/protein/carbs should I be eating? Please take into account that I'm currently training for a half marathon so I'm doing a lot of running. Will this make a difference - will I need to keep my carbs up?

    Thanks!

    50% carbs - 25% protein - 25% fat

Endurance athletes "carb up" before I race I hear. Maybe also look into that!

OK, now I'm really confused about the calorie intake. I multiplied my weight by 10 & it adds up to over 2000 cals - even if I deduct 500 from the amount it's still over 1500 a day. But my doctor has me on 1200 a day & I'm losing weight this way. Please explain.

It's just a guide remember, go by how you feel and don't be afraid to tweak it. Good luck with the run!

I am a vegetarian eating Indian vegetarian food. Getting adequate protein is extremely difficult with this food pattern. I started taking Whey protein powder as a supplement. Will it have any side effect? Will excess protein thru supplement create any other problems? Will it harm kidney / lever? Which is the best way for me to increase protein intake?

I like that advice. Just looked at my figures and the setting according you your figures should be around 1700 a day for me and MFP has me on 1590 so not too far off. It makes sense and I agree about the 3-week tweaking. Yes, it takes time to get your body set right for weight loss and those looking for a quick fix should not be on MFP. they can stick to their grapefruit/carrot, water, diets. In my case, so far so good. My hubby has given up booze for Lent and I am supporting him in this to some extent! I love my food and would find it really difficult to stick to 1200 a week so am "forced" to do exercise in order to eat more!! This is not a bad thing and I am gradually getting into the habit.

    Good luck everyone!

The formula is a guide that's all, plus there is far more leniency when it comes to larger people plus i didnt mention activity levels and other factors.

a 1200 calorie diet prescribed by your doctor will be fine but is known as severe calorie restriction. Don't worry - you're not going to starve or anything. Just stick to the plan you've been given. It's likely you'd still lose based on the formula though.

ALSO - someone pulled me up about -500 calories from the x12 formula. There was a typing error in there somewhere,

Whey protein is fine and it will not effect your liver unless you go overboard.

I suggest quinoa, nuts and Burgen Bread. JUST One slice is 7g protein and it's DELICIOUS!!!!

If I were to eat 1200 calories a day, then worked out and burnt 1200 a day...is that unhealthy?

My BMR is 1464...if that helps o.o
Lol, so your net is zero calories in one day? Unless your morbidly obese (and even then a doctor would probably monitor calorie intake), yes.

I don't count or care for macros or calorie counting.

    Thanks very much though!!

I still have stubborn bits unfortunately :-( I'm looking to build muscle soon and macros will play a huge part in my progress then!
