Does anyone have a clean recipe for taco seasoning? I have tried cayenne pepper, chili powder, and garlic and it is good but doesn't taste the same as opening an envelope of Old El Paso!

Thanks!

I have never tried Old El Paso, but I worked in a Mexican restaurant for years and the main seasonings we used were cumin, chili powder, garlic, and onion. We also used a lot of fresh cilantro. I think the cumin will give you the flavor you are looking for. The first time I smelled it I instantly thought "THAT smells like good Mexican food!" :)

bump too! I buy Club House Tex Mex in the big bottle, but still would rather do my own.
  • Taco seasoning also often has sugar in it. Shocking right? maybe that's the flavor aspect you're missing. Good luck. Let us know what you end up mixing together!

    This is an excellent question!

I use those packets sometimes, but I just don't feel good about it, given the high sodium content.

I agree that cumin is probably the secret ingredient, especially in fajita seasoning.

I'm looking forward to trying this myself this weekend!

In my quest to cut out sodium and sugar, I found this recipe. I like mine a bit spicier, so I tweak it some with more chili powder and cumin. You can adjust to your taste.

    4 tbsp chili powder
3 tbsp plus 1 tsp paprika
    3 tbsp ground cumin
1 tbsp plus 2 tsp onion powder
    1 tsp garlic powder
    1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well to blend. Store in airtight container.
To prepare taco meat: Use 2 heaping tablespoons in place of a package of taco seasoning...cook approx. 1 lb of meat, add 1 cup of water with the seasoning, simmer until the liquid is almost completely gone.

Fresh cilantro is the key to making a recipe taste Mexican!!! And of course the cumin and chili powder. :))

Try a little green tabasco for some heat as well!

I love to make my own, my recipe is basically the same as what's already been listed. Most commercial taco seasoning adds flour as a thickener. I keep mine low carb by not adding it in usually, but either way it's delicious!

I stopped using taco seasoning when I read the ingredients to see most of them didn't even have spices in them just corn starch or flour, a bunch of chemicals, and "natural flavors". I use paprika, cumin, minced garlic, and chili powder in mine. Also, I like to add a 4 oz can of tomato sauce (by the tomato paste and canned veggies). I think it allows the spices to coat the meat more evenly. If you are worried about sodium, there are reduced sodium tomato sauces available.

So glad you asked this question! I've been wondering the same thing. My husband is so quick to just pick up those packets at the store but I never feel good about it and what "other" stuff might be in there. I figure we're using it for seasoning/spices why can't we just use spices to make it ourselves. I just didn't know what spices to use! Thanks for asking the question I had but never thought about asking on here....and thanks to those who provided recipes! I can't wait to try them and convert my hubby from the store bought packets!
