at a resort spa? My wife and I are taking a trip to a resort and have a day at the SPA booked for 50 minute massages. I am already paying a ridiculous amount but that is the price of doing buisness...am I expected to tip? If so how much?

yep, you're expected to tip. Place I went last week has a nice polite and seriously tacky "welcome to your first massage" pamphlet and it spells out the "expected tip." $15 of half hour massage and $25 for an hour massage. I didn't get the massage but laughed hysterically as I walked out. I'm OK with tipping but to pretty much demand it AND to list seriously ridiculous amounts? Forget it......

a lot of places include gratuity in the sales price, especially if it's a fancy shmancy place. i used to work at a resort, and i got accustomed to getting tipped for basically anything- i once got a tip just for telling someone where the restrooms were. i would be prepared to tip either way.

Yes I do, but I am getting a little tired of every counter I come across having a tip jar on it.

Thinking of putting one on my desk at work.

I always tip the person who gives me a massage or any other type of spa service. Why wouldn't you?

I do tip if I go to a spa, but it depends on the service. I agree with 20%.

Yep, 20% of the cost of the massages.
Most people in that type of work WORK for their tips, so tipping is extremely important.

I tip about 15-20%... although I will admit a couple months ago the woman wouldn't stop talking and for a deep tissue massage i think my cat walks on my back when I'm sleeping... I debated not tipping because it had felt like a waste of money!

  • I usually tip cos I used to work as a waitress so for me its natural but I have to get a good service cos I know how to open my mouth.

This is how I feel about it. At least 20% at a restaraunt. However, I know that they get paid very little and rely on tips as their main source of income. Others in the service industry get higher pay so I normally tip 10-15% depending on how happy I was with the service. So hair/nail salon, massage, tattoos, all get between 10-15%. Just my opinion.

I hate how the frozen yogurt places have tips jars. It's self serve!! I never got tips for being a cashier!

Yes. If they have to touch you and they aren't a doc or nurse they get a tip.

I tip for spa servies. Most of the money you pay for a spa service is set by the spa and goes toward overhead (toward the spa), each person is different, but in many places they rent their space from the spa and what they earn is a small flat rate based on the percentage of what you pay toward the bill. I tip $20 per hour for a really good massage and 10 - 20% on most other services. Ettiquette is different when you're serviced by the owner/operator, but most people still stick to this standard anyway.
