Oh, and Braggs liquid aminos IS soy sauce, read the label
Not quite. Bragg's is unfermented. Soy sauce is fermented.0 -
Bragg Liquid Aminos
YES!! This stuff is GREAT and very very low sodium!
Um no.. it's not low in sodium at all. I worked out the sodium content and compared it to soy sauce - it actually has 100mg more sodium than soy sauce per tablespoon.
She is right, i was not looking at the serving size.. Braggs is 320mg per teaspoon.0 -
How about brown gravy?0

How about brown gravy?
Depends what it's made of.. could be chock full of fat in addition to the sodium..0 -

ok, it seems like there is someone here who wants to be argumentative, which was not my intention. This product is an alternative to regular soy sauce. However, it is made from soy beans, there for it is "soy sauce". To answer the question of the original poster. It is a good product, in my opinion, and tastes great in small doses. I have found it to be a stronger taste than regular soy sauce so you can use less of it, therefore, being lower sodium in your dish.0 -
As mentioned, Coconut Aminos are awesome. No idea on the sodium level vs soy sauce though. I don't eat soy period.0

Bragg's Liquid Aminos all the way!0

Wasn't trying to argumentative at all. Just being technical because it's like comparing tempeh to natto. Fermented/unfermented products offer various nutritional benefits - just figured it should be noted.0 -
I mix a bit of salsa into rice. Delish.
Or corn. Or other veggies. They bring flava!
I also like to throw some garlic or other spices into the water while it's cooking... or stir in cilantro/chives/onions after cooking...
Now I'm hungry!0 -
Braggs has 160mg of naturally occurring sodium per 1/2 tsp from soy beans. No table salt added. It is very salty tasting, so it easily can be watered down. You can put it in a spray bottle w some water, as suggested on their site. Surely, if you need to restrict your sodium, this isn't the product for you0

I've cut out all added salt. Most food doesn't need it anyway, so I don't worry about buying low sodium or salt substitutes (which are disgusting, btw. I will never make THAT mistake again.)
I use only traditionally brewed soy sauce. I don't use it all the time, just whenever I make a stir fry, and occasionally in my teriyaki recipe.
So cut all extra salt, and then use the full sodium soy sauce when you want it.0 -
Bragg Liquid Aminos

The spice sumac is lovely on rice. It's a lemony tangy flavour. Delicious. I found it on eBay, but can also get it from Asian shops. X0

I can't substitute soy sauce lol!
But I like Trader Joes low sodium (60%less salt) soy sauce.
Also, I only buy unrefined salt, currently have RealSalt, only use unsalted butter, rarely use canned ingredients, or eat out.
These kind of choices reduce my sodium a LOT! I avoid pizza (WHOA, the sodium!) The unrefined salt, IMO, acts completely differently in my body....I just HATE water retention.0 -
Thank you all, I had no idea this would get so many replies. No high blood pressure Gilda.
No, the Bragg wouldn't help me but thank you:)
I will check out the Liquid Aminos, that sounds like an option. Thanks again, EVERYONE!! denise:)0 -
I'm going to replace the soy sauce with seasonings including nutritional yeast. I love the yeast and it has a tiny bit of sodium in it. I changed my diary and it took off over 400 in sodium!
thanks again everyone, denise0 -
^^ Sounds interesting, haven't heard of nutirional yeast.
Just a warning about LoSalt (the potassium chloride replacement for sodium chloride): if you have a heart condition you shouldn't take this as high levels of potassium can disrupt the heart rhythm. Strange that it's advertised as heart healthy!0 -
If you are making the rice at home, you can make it with low sodium chicken brother instead of water for more flavor. I've never tried it with rice, but we cook our quinoa that way and its much better.0

Why do you need to substitute? We as people should train ourselves to like the taste of food not sauces. This just my opinion. I eat healthy. Some people call my food plain or boring but the truth is I have been training myself to enjoy the subtle flavours of real food.... Fruit and veggies, brown rice, and meat all have delicious flavours once you cut the crap and start tasting the real flavours you find them actually delicious. We programmed by the food industry to like artificial intense flavour. This is not real food!0
