The `expert`
There are so many people on MFP that give advice, that bully (yep it is true), that are super motivational, that are funny...and more
This question may not get many replies cos people may get shy...
but what makes `the expert` what makes the person that we should all listen to `the expert`?
Who knows best?

I have never felt bullied by anyone on this site and I am surprised that any adult has.
To answer your question, the so-called expert is someone who has had fitness success and has chosen to educate him or her self.0 -
It's me.

I can tell you that Oreos are not the HOO HAR everyone makes them out to be.
Therefore I must be the expert as I go against the mass hysteria to deliver the truth.0 -
Even "Experts" don't agree.0

Nobody! You just assess the advice your given and make your own decisions. Don't let anybody tell you what you should and shouldn't be doing. Do what you think is right for you!0
-
Well, ideally I'd like to think that people would weigh the evidence, do their own due diligence and read research from credible sources, employ their own critical thinking skills, turn on their cray cray-dar, be aware of their own baggage they're bringing into this and how it affects decision-making, and ultimately choose to listen to advice which advocates a rational, balanced, slow approach to weight loss that is healthy and sustainable.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy. And by that I mean not easy at all. It takes a while to be able to do all that. I need to remember that when I see some of the stuff I do around here. I was right there with them once.0 -
I was going to comment, but "the populars" found my daughter's instagram account. And that's, like, so not cool because she hates them times, like, infinity.

It's kind of subjective. Alan Aragon, Mark Rippetoe, Jim Wendler, Layne Norton, etc, could all come here and post. People would contest them, and they would all eventually be banned.0

That's because Rippetoe would tell me to 'jump and shrug' on my power cleans, and I'd get all hostile on him.0 -
I usually go with people who have been successful with weight loss, have common sense attitudes towards being healthy, don't talk about quick fixes (diet pills, cleanses, etc...), and who (like Contrarian said) educate themselves on being healthy.
People who aren't as obsessed with the number on the scale, and are more concerned with their health. And people who aren't afraid to tell others excited about diet pills, that they are being scammed.
In the end, you know your body and you know what works for your body. But the "experts" may be able to guide you in the healthier direction so that your weight loss is better for you in the long run.
And I have seen so many threads about bullies.... but I have yet to see any actual bullying. I see people with strong opinions being called bullies though... :ohwell:
But I haven't been on here too long...
I have found great motivation here (like you, twinketta!!) and some very inspiring people (ahem... yoovie...)!

How YOU doin'?0 -
Good question. I dont think anyone is an expert even those of use with paper behind our names. The science of nutrition is unfortunately fairly recent within the last century, and every year something new is learned or old ideas are found to be completely false i.e. you rarely see the square meal idea anymore. I think you take bits and pieces from everyone. You watch what they say. If I see the words "ALWAYS or NEVER." I pretty much disregard everything esle thats said.0

For the third time today... I love you.0 -
I know best. Listen to me.0

I listen to people with incredible bodies that inspire me or people that have advanced degrees with years of experience teaching and getting results out clients/students. On MFP, that leaves about 2-3 people. The rest are just as clueless as I am.0

EXPERT defined is a "has been 50 miles away from home" or an ex-drip under pressure.0

What makes a person "average"?0
-
It is subjective. But like all things Internet, you can check things out on your own. It requires some effort, but it's worth gaining knowledge.
I consider people who have consistently posted good information about a particular subject to be an "expert" here. They are folks that often cite sources to make their point, and their messages don't change much over the years. I'll pretty much take anything with a grain of salt, go look it up to confirm its veracity, and make a decision to the amount of truthiness.
After awhile, I'll start to take the word of people have proven to be pretty damn knowledgeable. There are quite of few here on MFP.
Although, re-reading the OP, if using the word "bully" when asking about expertise, an "expert" may not be what you are looking for. Giving advice and being funny is different that being an expert. Though many of the experts on MFP are hilarious.0 -
I'm a couple weeks away from getting my degree in Nutrition Science, so I'd consider myself more of an expert than the average user. But of course, there's no way I could really prove that to anyone0

Oh so much this. Also, One of my MFP rules is if the title proclaims is the "truth" it probably isn't.
There are a lot of knowledgeable people here. I look for those who have the knowledge, can back it up and apply what they say.0 -

Mostly this, but I think it is important to look at what is working for people with similar goals. I also tend to listen to those who are well researched.0 -
I listen to people who have comments that are backed by science, not opinion or pseudo science. Really, most information is either; A) easily verifiable or
easily debunked with a little research.

My only qualification for my humor is experience. If you laugh, it's probably due to an above average wit and excellent delivery with timing. On the Internet even.

There is a C, which is personal experience. However, that one is really hard to sift fact from bull**** on.0 -

nobody has ever bullied or been mean to me here.
i have an exceptionally good BS detector. when i see somebody continuously giving sound, logical advice with no hint of BS, then i tend to pay attention to what they post.
what i don't pay attention to?
orthorexics or anybody expounding the virtues of the latest "get thin quick" scam.
i don't listen to people who constantly complain about bullies, meanies, and rude people.
i don't listen to people who whine and threaten to quit all the time. this includes all of those people who have nothing but excuses for why they are fat and why they can't just eat less and move more.
i don't listen "elite" members with a hidden agenda. same with the shakes salesmen and saleswomen.0 -

That's a good prerequisite. If you have never done at least one of the following, you've never lifted ****: puked, **** your pants, injured yourself, passed out after sitting a weight down.0
