  • I"m there 6 days a wk, for at least 2 hrs each time, some days more depending on cardio.. I do classes Tues, wed, thurs sat., along w/ cardio, then mon, fri I do my own cardio and weight training..

I norm do 15-45 mins of cardio, normally the arc trainer or the stair master, burns the most calories in a short time.. The classes I take are body pump, and triple play (which is cycle, strength and yoga)

I think more then 3 hrs is a lot, sometimes even more then 2 hrs is a lot, what about your family and etc.. ?

In and out in 45 minutes. I go 6 days a week and alternate running and weight lifting.
  • An hour of cardio and then a 20 trip on the weight circuit.

Sometimes I double up the circuit and cut back on cardio.

  • I'm asking as at the moment I pay for 3 hours of parking in the gym car park and find that I'm running out of time.

No. Reconsider what you're doing at the gym. Reconsider EVERYTHING

    this
  • I spend about 90 minutes in my gym.

An hour or 45 minutes of my own twisted step aerobics. The rest goes to weight training. If I have my trainer that day I will do a full hour of said aerobics if I have the time.

What gym are you going to that requires you to pay for parking?

Can't believe some of the numbers I'm seeing here.

Do you people seriously plan on spending 8+ hours in the gym every week of your life for the rest of your lives?

It's better than spending 8+ hours a week sitting at home doing nothing. That's for sure.

Consider doing much more intense exercise if you can last for 3 hours straight. You should be exhausted with just an hour of work, if that.

35-55 mins tops, then out the door. 2-3X a week lifting and 1 or 2 days treadmill or spinning. Out the door in less then an hr.

I only go to the gym for the pool, so I'm there somewhere between 30 - 60 minutes.
  • 3 days a week at the gym: 5 minute warm up, 20-30 minutes HIIT treadmill or elliptical, 30 minutes of weights - alternating lower and upper body on different days, abs every day, 5 minutes of stretching

2 days a week: 5 minutes of warm up, 20-40 minutes HIIT and plyometrics at home (possibly a warm up run for 10 minutes or 1 mile outside if the weather is right), 5 minutes stretching

rest days: light yoga or nothing at all

So, I guess I spend no more than 1 hour MAX at the gym...i don't shower or anything there though...

I abide by the rule that you should work as hard as you can for a shorter period of time rather than not as hard as you can for a long time.
  • i try to go 2 or 3 times a week to the gym. lately i've been doing heavy lifting there, as I don't have any machines or heavy weights at home. with 5 min warm up and stretches at the end it usually takes me just over 1 hour.

the other days of the week I stay at home and do cardio/yoga with P90X. that usually takes 1-1.5 hr.

    :)

On the weekends I run b/n 4.5 and 6 miles with pull-ups, crunches and dips before and after. During the week I get at least one 3.5 mile run in with pull-ups, crunches and/or dips before or after. I'm in for 2 hrs each day on the weekend and 1 hr during the week.

As I'm not interested in endurance training, 60 minutes tops. It's about being effective rather than spending hours. For fitness, it'd be HIIT. For weights, so heavy I don't want to do many reps. Less is more! Plus I'm thinking long term - can I do this for life? If it required me to train every day for 2 hours, I don't think it'd fit my lifestyle forever!

The only exception is when I go climbing - more is better so I'll try to stay for hours (I mean up to 8 hours). It'd be partly for exercise and partly for socialising. I love climbing. :)

How long does eveyone spend in the gym and what do you do in that time?

I'm asking as at the moment I pay for 3 hours of parking in the gym car park and find that I'm running out of time.

At the moment I try and do 40 min on the treadmill, then do a circuit of weights, then i do as I much as i can on the cross-trainer which tends to be between 20- 30 min's ( unless I start on this first ) I then finish my session in the pool doing lenghts which can be another 30- 60 min's but this depends on what time I have left and I'm rushing my shower to make sure I'm not late back for my car.

    Does anyone else have

More weights and less other stuff....

Cut the treadmill time in the beginning you only need 10 min for a warm up before the circuit training. If you want more cardio run outside on non gym days.

M W F full body strength training, 45 min. Tu Th 45 min cardio, treadmill or my new fav, arc trainer.
  • I'm at the gym usually an hour to and hour and a half, depending on how much I feel like doing. Today, for instance, I was there for an hour this morning - 30 minute interval run on the treadmill + 5000m row, tonight I'll be going back with my fiance and doing probably 30 minutes on the arc trainer, 10-15 minutes biking and then some weights.

I guess I'm lucky, in that my gym offers free parking, so I tend to go multiple times, for shorter amounts.

In a "perfect workout day at a gym," I would spend:

    60 minutes in a weight/step circuit (30 minutes x 2)
    30 minutes rowing
    45 minutes on the elliptical
    60 minutes swimming
15 minutes between sauna & shower

But it's rare that I ever spend more than 60 minutes at the gym at any one time, and if I have more time than 60, I'm out on the road (running or cycling)

I go to the gym for 45 minues because it's at work and I only have an hour total to get changed, get my burn on, shower and get back to my desk. On the days when I go after work, I usually stay closer to an hour. On the weekends in the summer, I can be outside walking and/or running for up to two hours.

As far as what I do...typically 30-35 minutes on cardio machine and 10-15 minutes of strength training or a 45 minute circuit training routine.

YEP...give or take an hour or so. I've been doing it for over a year, and its more of a habit now than anything. If I miss a day for some reason, I feel irritable all day.

Man that's what I'm thinking. Even guys like Jim Wendler keep their workouts to under an hour.

The last thing I want to be doing when I'm 40, 50, 60 years old is spending 12 hours a week in a gym hammering at a rowing machine or elliptical. Totally pointless and unsustainable. I'll do my 3 hours of lifting a week, find some hours to play tennis or racquetball, and call it good.

I went from 25% body fat to 10% without ever spending more than 3 hours a week in the gym. I can't imagine it takes 3-4 times that much to maintain 10%. I guess if you want to be a bodybuilder you can spend a lot of time targeting certain muscles though.

Wow very interesting to read what people do at the gym. I am lazy, time for me to step it up!
I do strength training for 30 minutes and then either run or elliptical for 20 mins.
