55 and over friends

I am looking for some friends that are over 55. I am 58 years old and had 72 pounds to my first goal to lose. I have a bad knee that probably needs to be replaced within two years and so I am trying to lose weight and bring down the BMI before surgery. Anyone out there want to be supportive friends?

I am 61, 5' 2" tall. It was my goal to loose 50 lbs to get to the lightest I've been in the last 20 years. Just accomplished that this morning. I now realize that I could loose another 50 to be at a more reasonable weight. So now that I've reached my big goal, it is free fall from here. I am so excited. My weekly loss was at 1.5 lbs a week, but has slowed down in the last month. We will see where I end up, but this is my life long eating style now. For a healthy life!

Hi there. Glad to see there is a 55 and over group here. I just turned 55 this month and find myself 50 lbs overweight. Am starting my weightloss plan today and using MFP (suggested strongly by my doctor). Hope that we can help keep each other motivated. I look forward to getting to know you all! :flowerforyou:

Hi! My name is Sandi and I've been using My Fitness Pal for 3 weeks now. In the 3 weeks I've dropped 9 pounds and I'm loving this app. I will be 60 in a couple of weeks and I am trying to lose a grand total of about 70 pounds so I still have a ways to go.

I'd love to be able to chat with others to get meal ideas, and just get some support.

Hoping to make some new friends here!! :flowerforyou:

Hi, my name is Anne. I'm 58, soon to be 59. I had breast cancer 6 years ago and I have been struggling to get back in shape since then. I am 5'1" so it is very hard to lose weight. I tried this program last July and gave up because I wasn't getting anywhere with it. I have finally admitted to myself that I just have to move more. My husband and i started Yoga 2 months ago and I am feeling much better but no weight loss. We also walk several days a week for 2 miles each time. I only have 10 lbs to lose, but it's harder than all of the previous pounds lost. Any support would be greatly appreciated.

You need to be my friend I was in the same boat I was told last year I needed my knee replaced but that I should loss weight before the surgery, so I lost 76 pounds and last week I went back to the surgeon to set up the surgery. I had new x-rays taken and I no longer need a knee replacement I no longer have bone on boneI have a gap between my bones. I was amazed and thrilled I don't know if it was only because of the weight loss or also because I've been exercising and now have strong muscles supporting my knee, I just know I wouldn't have to go through that painful rehab this summer. I'll be sending you a friend request we canupport each other.

I also would love to join your group. I am 62 and live in the Las Vegas area. It looks like I made to too many trips to the casino and spent too much time eating the cheep food. I have got 35 pounds to loose and would love to get as well as give support here in the news feed. My goal is two pounds per week but to be honest I have been known to cheat a little. - Rick Gaspa , Las Vegas

I'm 65. I was told that I'd probably eventually need surgery too. :frown: But, I started aquatic exercise and my knees are SO much better (I've taken off 51 pounds and want to take off at least 30 more). My arthritis feels so much better--haven't had new x-rays yet but I'm anticipating that my knee joints will have improved (at least that is the way that they feel). My waist measurement has gone down by 8 inches (and as far as I'm concerned, that's the best measurement of progress). I do a bit of weight lifting too and I know that is helping to lose body fat while retaining muscle. The aquatic exercise is designed to strengthen and build all your muscles (because of the resistance offered by the water) in addition to taking the load off your joints. I like it much better than swimming for my arthritis--it is the perfect thing to support your joints. I used to do lap swimming many years ago but I found it boring and hard to motivate myself to go. Now, I find that I look forward to my twice a week sessions in the pool--the pace and different exercises keep it from being boring--the hour just flies by. There are others there who have arthritis too--almost all of them in fact. Most public pools have programs from joint disabled to "aqua Zumba" to "aquatic boot camp" (I've watched before---looks brutal) so you can go to whichever fitness level you are. I just "graduated" today from "Joint Effort" (a bit gentler for the joint disabled) to regular "Aquasize" (and boy am I already feeling the "benefits" in my muscles!).

    p.s. My name is Ellie

    I won't be 55 for 6 weeks, but I hope that's close enough. I am 5'7 and 241. I need to lose 100 pounds. Phew! Sounds scary!

I have arthritic knees, so I understand a little about both the discomfort and the difficulty that one encounters. I also have high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome.

I'd love to support and be supported, so if my youth (ha!) doesn't pose an issue, plz add me.

Welcome! I had the "metabolic" thing too. One of the things that really made a big difference was cutting out sugar and wheat (if you are interested in more of the details, send me a friend request and you can see my food diary). Before I started on my new plan, several years ago, my blood sugar was pretty high, and I was on two blood pressure meds. Now my blood sugar is back in the normal range and I am totally free of the b.p. meds! (woohoo!) I feel at least 10 years younger (and my friends tell me I look it too). Cutting out the sugar and wheat really made my blood pressure fall almost immediately--even before I lost much weight. I think it likely helped with the arthritis too. I generally follow a "lower carbohydrate" plan (not a ketogenic plan). I keep my carbs around 100 grams a day---a little more on my pool exercise days.

Hi. I turn 55 next month; feel free to add me as a friend.
I am nearing the end of the weight loss part of this experience but maintaining will be another battle so I'll be here for a long time to come. I keep an honest diary and try to log on every day.

I'm 55 also and would be happy to friend any of you. I've been on MFP daily since last September. As far as the exercising at home question I like Chalean Extreme. It can be tailored to your fitness level and you will find that you can advance quite quickly.
