For you who think it's "cruel" to keep your cat indoors; if I find a stray or feral cat on my property I will try to trap and kill it. Why should I tolerate a possible predator of my poultry? Let it run loose, then don't ***** when it doesn't come home. End of subject.

Too bad you can't explain to your kitty that you cannot enjoy his kill because there's no way it's in the MFP database.

That's why I have indoor cats, but I had indoor/outdoor cats growing up and they would do the same thing. I was more fascinated than disgusted and would bury the remains in the woods, in a section my sister and I sanctioned as an animal graveyard.

Not ALL cats kill. My indoor cat will watch a bug walk around him and he won't budge. We used to have a rat and a bunny too, and our cat didn't care about the rat, and was scared of the bunny! We do let him out in the backyard with us sometimes, and he just sits in the sunny spots.

My dog, a min-pin, is the one that likes to catch lizards and birds, even if he's only outside a few minutes to do his business- thankfully it's rare he catches anything. MelsAuntie- I suppose you think dogs should never be allowed outside since they have the ability to kill too? Granted my dog is only off-leash in the back yard, so he only kills animals in OUR yard...though if I ever accidentally dropped the leash on a walk (because I'm human and occasionally make mistakes) he would go after any bird/bug/lizard/rabbit around. Would you kill a dog or any other animal that crossed your yard? I can understand being upset if an animal is killing your pets, but there's no reason you can't create an outside habitat for your pets that prevent outside animals from getting through. If they mean enough to you to KILL animals you encounter, I'd think it would mean enough to create a safer environment. You can't control what other people do but you can control your own situation.

Keeping a cat indoors is not necessarily cruel. However, if the cat was feral most of its life, and used to being outside, then yes it would be cruel to keep them inside 24/7. I had a coworker who had adopted a feral cat. The cat was very skinny, and my coworker was afraid of it getting sick and dying, or hit by a car, etc. So she trapped it to get it neutered, and adopted it. Being inside 24/7, the cat had major behavioral problems. After working with a behavioral specialist for cats, it was recommended that she allow the cat out during the day. Then at night, when predators like coyotes and owls were likely to emerge, the cat would be kept inside. Yes, there was a chance something bad could happen to the cat while out, but not as likely as when it was sick and starving on the streets 24/7. And the behavioral problem stopped immediately.

I feel like some people don't realize that some cats can not be kept indoors. Cat ignorance, I suppose...

My family got a new cat (kitten actually, she was about 2 months old) when I was about 20 and we tried our hardest to keep her indoors, but no matter what she managed to find a way to sneak out (even climbing up the screen door and shifting her body weight to open it), and then she would make a run for it. She always came back though. She knew her home. She is 10 years old now still living at my mom's house, giving her tasty presents, and probably healthier than my own 2 indoor kitties, who are FAR younger. Believe me, I know how to keep a cat indoors, I've managed to do it with 3, but that one darn cat...!

Whether you like it / them or not, cats have temperments and are all different... just like people on MFP.

All cats will kill if they can. They make no distinction between mice, songbirds, or your neighbor's baby chickens. Free roaming cats are destructive vermin. Keep your cats inside. I've lost ducklings to predation and I HATE cats.

Before my divorce, my DD had a rabbit and we had a family cat. The rabbit had a pen outside surrounded by chicken wire, open on top. No cat ever jumped over that fence and tried to kill the rabbit. Know what did? Our neighbors dog dug UNDER the fence where the rabbit pen was and killed the rabbit. Was I mad at the dog? No. I was mad at the neighbor, though.

I haven't read the entire thread but if you are feeding your cat kibble, he is seeking out what his carnivore body needs. Meat. Cats aren't meant to eat all carbs.

Why kill it when you can relocate it or bring it to a local shelter? That's cruel.

I'm confused, an animal (cat, not quite as quick thinking as a human) killing a bird is cruel, but a human killing a cat is OK?

I got the idea after watching "Pet Cemetery". But I knew the animals wouldn't come back from the dead because it wasn't on an Indian burial ground. lol
