Why am I not losing weight?

I need some help. I have lost no weight in the past month (well, down .2, up .2, etc). I'm in the middle of RI30 and am losing inches, and before RI30 I did 30DS - that month, I lost 2.6 lbs.

Basically, it seems like exercise = no lbs lost for me. In the past, I've made the decision to quit exercising in favor of scale movement, but I REALLY don't want to do that again. I opened my diary. I'm open to suggestions (well, I'll try to be...). Help?

losing inches is better than weight.... the whole world can see you getting smaller, but no one knows the number on the scale anyway!

Oh, agreed - except I can pretty much guarantee that I won't be able to get to my goal size (6) at the weight the scale says I am (188).

the only thing i can see that could hinder your loss is the many hot dogs you eat. SALT SALT SALT. change it up to something else? otherwise, youre eating pretty healthy, but maybe switch around your foods a bit? keep at it and dont get discouraged!! youre doing great.

I only went back about a week, but I saw LOTS of hot dogs and almost no veggies. Yes, you're keeping your calories on the low end, but you're eating a pretty repetitive set of foods. It looked pretty boring to me and hard to sustain. Even though it's protein and low cal/carb, 3 or 4 hot dogs is not a healthy meal. If it takes 3 hot dogs to fill you up, try replacing 2 of those dogs with a stir fry, or a bunch of roasted broccoli, or a whopping big chop salad. Then snack on more veggies later.

I try to eat 1-2 cups of veggies (or more) to every meal. I don't often get that in, but it's a goal.

Try to expand on your protein sources beyond hot dogs and ground beef. While those hot dogs may be a better quality than Oscar Meyer, that doesn't really make them a great nutrient-source.

Finally, be patient. My weight loss was relatively slow. A bunch in the beginning, then a slow descent pound by pound for the next six months. You can do it!

I think your macronutrient ratio looks good, but I'm curious to know if you are incorporating any weight training in your fitness program? With the amount of protein you're consuming, you could probably build a nice tone of lean muscle which will help you fit into the size 6. And if your calorie budget stays the same, you won't get big or bulky either, just lean. Good luck to you!

I think you are eating too many hot dogs---not the best source of protein and they are full of sodium (it has been shown that excess sodium interferes with weight loss). Also, you are eating a lot of apples. Apples are pretty high in fructose and fructose is not that great if you are trying to burn fat (it's complicated but basically, fructose tells your body to store fat). Grapefruit has low fructose and has enzymes (like naringenin) which helps with weight loss. Here's an article by Dr. Weil (health guru) on the benefits of naringenin: http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA400863/Naringenin-Drink-More-Grapefruit-Juice.html

Also, it is VERY important that you eat vegetables for lots of reasons. Why aren't you eating them?

What sodium number should I be aiming for? I'm almost always below the 2500 MFP set for me, even with the hot dogs (which I don't even like all that much, but they're quick and low-carb! Lol.).

swap the hotdogs for chicken, turkey, tuna, prawns, cottage cheese, ham... all of which you can buy ready to eat if you dont want to prepare them yourself.

I can't eat the ready to eat other sources of protein - I have a long, extremely boring list of food allergies/intolerances. I agree that I need to vary things, though.

RI30 includes weight training, to the person who asked about that!

And I don't eat veggies because a) I've been lazy about them and b) I'm trying to up my calories to net at least 1200 and I feel stuffed all the time. Veggies make that worse.
  • I looked at your diary and see a lot of the same foods pretty much daily… drop the amount of processed meats you are eating and add some more veggies, fruits and even some whole grains and eggs. What about yogurt and or cheese or peanut butter. Having allergies and intolerances makes it harder but too much processed meats such as hot dogs are loaded with sodium. Try varying your menu more so you don't eat the same thing everyday… hope you can find some great suggestions from others on here too..
  • I used to be lazy about veggies, too -- until I went on a diet that "required" them at lunch and dinner -- maybe not the best way to force yourself to do it -- but it worked for me.

One easy way I found was if I took a ceramic bowl, put in a handful of raw veggies (green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, asparagus, mushrooms -- any of these (or a mix) will work), added a couple of tablespoons of water, and then put a saucer on top, I had a "free" steamer. After 2 minutes on high in the microwave, took the whole thing out with two pot holders -- shifted the saucer to allow the water to drain out while keeping in the veggies and poof -- easy veggies, already in a bowl. :)

The veggies really helped my digestive health as well . . .
  • Apparently we are related. It takes a while for it to kick in. Remember you are dealing with a human body. It does things in its own sweet time. Don't give up just yet. It will happen.:)

I see a lot of butters and processed meats on your diary. I would focus on eating fresh non GMO organic, kosher, grass fed meats and limit yourself to one serving of nut butter and one serving of cooking butter a day. also, you realy need to increase your vegetable consumption. I am bad about vegies too. So I make tons of stews, soups and roasts to force myself to eat vegies!!! I eat salads too but you will hardly ever see a cup of green beansor whatever on my diary. I like to hide them in my meals :D But your basic food intake ideas are great!!!! sometimes we are just at the weight our body wants us to be even if we are not happy with that. you have alreadylost a lot of weight...dotn be so hard on yourself!!!

If you avoid processed foods, you can pretty much stop worrying about your sodium. I found that since I don't get salt from processed stuff, I can afford to actually flavor my food with some nice sea salt blends. They add flavor and brighten meals in a way that salty packaged stuff doesn't.
