Hi, I have about 17kg (40 pound) to lose and I have started to lose, but I also have a clothes budget, so I'm spending it on bras and sports gear but nothing else really.
What clothing have you bought as you lost weight?
When did you buy it?
Thanks

dresses and belts! Seriously, I feel like with dresses, you can wear them through being different sizes as you won't shrink out of them as quickly. Another thing you can do is look in thrift shops for stuff you know you won't be wearing for a long time.0

I bought myself a new compression jacket when I reached my first goal. I do a lot of trail running, so the jacket helps keep me warm/cool and dry all at the same time (it gets chilly here). For little goals, I will buy a new sports bra or a quick-dry tshirt to work out in. Basically, I use my rewards for clothes instead of using them for food. I also check out sales and I just ordered a pair or running shorts for the summer, and a new pair of capris for the spring. I have plenty of tops, but bottoms are what I struggle with to find so those are more important on my list of things to look out for, but new clothes are an awesome reward for reaching a goal!0

When it comes to going down in sizes, I wait until the clothes I have are falling off of me before I finally switch to the lower size. My mom has done the same thing, and she would always be pleasantly surprised if she tried on the next size down and realized even it was too big. But this way, you can make your clothes stretch that much farther.0

As I was dropping weight, I went to a nice thrift shop and bought dresses, skirts, and jeans. As my size decreased, I boxed up the clothes and took them back as donations and used the discount coupon they gave me to buy more clothes. Never had to feel bad about spending a lot of money on clothes that I knew I would only wear for a couple months.0

Thrift shops have a ton of barely used athletic clothes as well.0 -
I love shopping and fashion so I'm always buying things as I lose weight. The most versatile things are dresses and tunic tops, (add a stretchy belt as you lose weight) and I like to wear layers so I'm always buying new cami's and cardigans, which are also very forgiving as your size changes.0

thank you for your tips- will go to the thrift shop0

bought new jeans, 7lbs lost. I don't have a lot to lose, just to tighten and tone so I think these jeans will fit me
for a long time.
also I bought some exercise pants that are smaller0 -

I am almost down 30lbs, and I have yet to buy new clothes. I am like you, and I don't have the extra money to keep buying clothes. I'll probably buy clothes when I hit my first goal (which is 60lbs).0

I go to thrift shops often no matter what. I love clothes and I can get new ones all the time, wear them for a season and bring them back for the charity to resell. Sometimes I find keepers like a Burberry coat in perfect condition I got for $35. I also shop at what I call "real" stores. When I am shrinking, stay away from buying pant and fitting skirts because they don't fit for long. Stretchy tops and skirts offer the most wear.0

Haha I'm terrible at this. I hate buying clothes until I've reached a certain goal! I tried on size 12 skinny jeans the other day and they fit again (I had a blip for a few months) but I refused to get them because I'm waiting for them to look a tiny bit baggier! Ridiculous isn't it!0

i agree with dresses and belts, they last the longest. Check out your local value village/goodwill/salvation army.0

THIS!! I go to the goodwill store twice every week ...sometimes I am just window shopping.... my local store has 50% off days... I have gotten brand new Old Navy jeans for $4... skirts & dresses too....
I think even when I get to goal I will continue... there are a lot of great itmes/bargains....0 -
Check to see if you have a Clothes Mentor in your area - a chain of re-sale stores here in states.

They buy (on the spot) used clothes and sell really nice things for less!!! I did not buy anything until I could NOT wear my clothes. I sold the old ones (they don't take all but some) and bought some new.0 -
Goodwill! Poppin' tags!0

I just slung out a load of stuff that was too big, couldn't be Cinched in with a belt, could have fitted another person in with me, looked tatty, that kind of thing. Bought some gym clothes and a couple of stretchy tops in the right size. They were only cheap so it won't matter when they are too big as well. Oh, and some smooth underwear. The number of women I see exercising with a nylon lave thing sticking out the back is amazing. It's got to chafe at some point. But not for me.0

Dresses and belts is a good idea. A jersey dress and a cardi will span a lot of change. I just bought a couple new suits on sale, in my current size, good quality (Talbots), but really cheap. I have a hard time getting non-stretchy suits that fit my chest in the best of circumstances, so ultimately the waists will have to be taken in, and then the jackets will probably fit me better than anything else I have -- and the skirts/pants are really only a size or maybe two off, so they could be taken in too. I have a really hard time getting up and thinking "I have nothing to wear that fits and I am so fat blah blah blah" -- so I just bought these with the ultimate goal of having them tailored.
As far as other stuff -- I recommend Old Navy and Lands End, particularly the sale stuff. A couple of pairs of pants or jeans isn't a huge investment, but having them in a smaller size is a big boost!0 -
One question I have... since clothes now fit, when something actually fits I want to buy it so... how do I know what really looks good and I should buy or that I am just happy to fit into "trendy" , nice and fitting clothes???0

This is exactly what I do!! I have found the best stuff at thrift stores!! Last time I found a pair of true religion jeans for $5.99!!0 -
I like to have at least 2 pair of pants that I feel great wearing. If I cant find any at the consignment shop, I'll buy them on sale at Old navy. I have a LOT of beautiful linen clothes that will need alterations this summer!0

I've bought a lot of stuff as I've dropped weight and I've shopped entirely at thrift stores! Once dress pants for work are baggy, I donate them and buy 'new' ones at Goodwill. Same with tops to wear to work. I am lucky to have a coworker who has brought me bags of clothes that no longer fit her so I have gotten some awesome jeans to wear as well. The only things I've bought new are bras and panties and workout clothes, as needed.
I've been so fortunate to find such nice things at Goodwill, it's going to be physically painful I think to ever shop at the mall again and spend that kind of money :laugh:0 -
Another thrift shopper here - I go to the mall to try things on to get a feel for my size, and then hit the thrift shops to actually buy.
Some towns and cities also have "last chance" thrifts or days, where you can buy as much will fit in a bag or by the pound, which is where I really rack up - I scored a vintage couture coat last year for abotu $3 this way!0 -
I usually shop the clearance racks and find lots of good deals for under $10 (usually at Kohl's or JCP). The one thing that I have had to buy are pants because you can only wear the "big" pants for so long. Usually when I dropped two sizes I would buy a couple pair of pants (on sale of course.)0

I got around some of it by having a friend of mine who had the lap band surgery give me a bunch of clothes she'd outshrunk. However, when things finally got to where my S24 pants were starting to look pretty stupid, even with a belt, I broke down and bout three new pairs of S20 pants. I was careful to buy pants with belt loops, so I should be able to wear them through S16/18 before I have to consider replacing them. (They're closing down all the Zellers' in Canada, so I lucked out and got three pairs of $65 Haggar dress pants for less than $20 a pair.)
There are two hefty bags of stuff I need to get Canadian Diabetes to nip around and pick up for Value Village.
I will not buy unmentionables used. For those, I waited until my favourite online store had a 30% off sale and invested $120 in six new bras and twelve pairs of underpants. They're a size smaller than I wear now, so they'll fit, but I can shrink into them. (You can't put a belt on a pair of underpants, and I was developing diaper butt and chafing because they were so loose.)
Skirts and dresses are a non-starter in the area where I live in the winter. For several weeks, the high was -25C to -30C *before* the wind chill factor. And as much as I'd like to do thrift shops, the only close one has nasty selection and nothing big enough that even my reduced size will fit.
I really did wait until things got to where I started looking stupid before I spent the money. Clothing isn't really part of my budget and I'm not used to having to buy it. I've got stuff in the closet that's been there since the late 90s.

We have a store in town that has gently used name-brand clothes for women. We have had one for quite a while for teens and early 20s group, but they FINALLY opened ones for adults. I haven't gone yet because i still had some smaller sizes that fit me, but i would feel much better buying used clothes for my "in-between" sizes.0
-
I really waited as long as I could to buy new clothes ESPECIALLY bottoms. I walked around with my jeans sagging for months because I was in between sizes and just kept losing, along with the fact that like you I didnt wanna waste my money. Once I got down to my final target I bought new jeans, but tops I kinda bought as I went along, but the most dramatic differences were more in my jeans and shorts than anything else.0

Resale shops and clearance racks. I hit up the semi annual sale for vicotria secret everytime to buy new bras too. I have an extra 4-5 right now in my dress pants for work, but I refuse to buy new ones until they literally fall off my butt, otherwise I would have to buy new ones every 2 months, not in my budget.0
-
Another option to buying new clothes is to have your old ones taken in. This is cheaper than purchasing new and will work for a size or two. I wear slacks to work and have had them taken in once, I'm thinking about taking them in again, because, like you, I don't have a lot of money to spend on buying new clothes. I find the thrift stores and resale stores around here only have fairly small sizes, when you start at a 24 it takes awhile to get into the small sizes. I have invested in new bras--I had a fitting so they actually fit now--and new underwear. I just hate that creepy feeling like your underwear is falling down. I have dresses that I wear in the summer time that will work as I lose weight. The skirts I have I can take in as needed. I find tops are generally more forgiving but I have given the really big ones away.0
-
I found the stretchy skinny jeans at Old Navy to be very forgiving, so I bought a couple of pairs whenever they went on sale. Right now I have them in size 12, size 10 and size 8. Now I can wear both the 10 and the 8 without them looking too baggy and I pass on the ones that are looser to a friend who is also losing weight but is a little bigger than me yet. Talk to your skinny friends, they may be looking for an excuse to get new clothes, and shop the sales. I do a lot of "window shopping" so as to get an idea about what in and fashionable and then buy towards the middle of the season, when everything goes on sale to make room for the next season's clothing.0
