Should you still workout when you are REALLY sore?

So, this is how out if shape I am...I have done level 1 of the 30 day shred for only 2 days now and I am so insanely sore! I woke up early this morning to do it again but I was SO sore so I decided not to, only because I was unsure if it was going to be beneficial if I worked out on a sore body. I want to do it every day so if it is good to do it then I would love to do it tonight when I get home. Would anyone advise me to push pass my muscle soreness or is it better to give it a day? Thanks for your help!

No, your body needs some time to recuperate. I made the mistake of working out when I was sore, and I was also doing 30 Day Shred too, and I overdid it, and wound up needing a couple of weeks to fully recupe (I could barely walk, lol). Take a couple of days off from the 30DS, but on those days do some stretching and/or maybe take a walk. Be sure to drink plenty of water, too. You should be fine after 2-3 days and you can get back into 30DS again!0

If you're really , really sore take a day off but make sure you do some stretching and use those muscle lightly. Get back at it again tomorrow. You'll never get over the soreness if you take too long off in between to wait for it to go away. You'll be perpetually starting over.0

I've heard off a lot of people injuring themselves trying to do 30 Day Shred for 30 days straight, or just trying to do it without enough rest days. You don't want to be in that boat. I just got 30 Day Shred... I haven't tried it yet0

This. And also try to work into the program slower to start and build up to it. You have a great risk of injury, fatigue, and burnout if you go too hard too fast, as you are feeling
Just stick with it when your body recoups and it will eventually start feeling better!0 -
You need a rest day.
I did 30 day shred every day for 30 days, even though I could barely get out of my seat or walk or go downstairs, and I regret doing that!0 -
If super sore I at least try to do some stretching or light yoga the next day0

There's a difference between sore and pain. When I started P90X, I could barely walk just after 2 days into the workout. It was borderline painful. I pushed on per the schedule and it got better.
If you feel sharp pain, then you must stop and take some rest. However, if it's just soreness, it will go away with some stretching. I don't know if 30 day shred has one rest day per week built into the schedule but it's okay to take a rest day once a week. Other than that, just stick with the schedule and do your best.0 -
Suggestions: hot/warm bath with epsom salts, stretching, massaging, walking out your "kinks"
The program I'm doing actually doesn't have you do their workout every day pretty much for that reason. They rotate their workout with cardio days of your choice. I've also found that if I do just a little minor workout like hit up my bike or dance or just anything to stretch out and move my muscles before I go to bed on the days I do the intense workout, I'm actually less likely to wake up sore the next morning.
You should not workout the same muscle groups that are overly sore if you can at all help it. Try to relax those muscles before working them again else you risk damaging them and tearing something.0 -
Muscle soreness is normal however, if you are just starting a workout, its better to rest if you are very sore. If not, you set yourself up for injury. I pushed way too hard and ended up being injured and then couldn't excercise for months and still having to modify high impact now. Take rest days with light excercise and stretching then get back to Jillian.0

I wuld do some streaching exercises.... that will help you to feel wayyy better0

I would suggest taking at least one day off to rest (and do some gentle stretching as others have said). I went too intense with not enough rest days and am now fighting with my achilles tendon. My doctor and physiotherapist both said that they too injured themselves doing 30DS! I'm now modifying workouts to compensate for injury. It's not a race, so don't feel like you need to do the program every day. Change it up a bit, and take at least one rest day a week. I wish I had!0

Well, that depends if you are so sore that you have real pains that do not go away then yeah, take a day off. But if it is something that you can bear, you should try to work through it. I was so sore when starting 30DS (from like NO daily exercise) I couldn't believe that I actually WAS able to complete the workout. And usually, it actually felt better after working out.0

I started the 30DS a couple of weeks ago, and like you I was *really* sore after the first couple of days. I've read in other forums that Jillian herself didn't intend for the program to be done in 30 straight days, but rather recommends 5 out of 7 days, which is what I've been doing. No longer sore and still sticking to it. Don't beat yourself up about taking a rest day, just make sure you get back to it.0

Definitely rest. When i did insanity for the first time we took an unscheduled rest day because we were very sore and it was worth it.0

I would also recommend a dosage of protein after working out to help such as a recovery protein shake and don't push your body too far if you are just starting out. I normally push through minor soreness and feel better afterwards because I feel like I have worked it out by using them. Major soreness almost to the point that I can't perform simple tasks, forget it!0

Thanks for all the input! I ended up taking a rest day and you're all right, I felt way better when I did the workout the day after. I am now a week into 30DS and finally got through level 1 without stopping this morning. A small, but rewarding accomplishment.0
