Scared to start running?

I just ran into a person who told me she wants start running and wants to sign up for local short races, but she scared to come in last. My experience has been that the running community is the best and most supportive group of people ever! Everyone will cheer you on for getting off your *kitten* and running in the first place. If you've never run or you haven't run in a long time and want to start, just put your running shoes on and get out there! Everyone started at the beginning!????

so train and run some race distances alone until she feel sconfident that she wont be last.... not that being last matters, being out there and running does. But if its a big hurdle for her then she can train until she gets a decent time that would put her in the average group and then go for it

find a fun run to take part in. she *probably* wont come last and it'll boost her confidence.

You run a race to complete it - where everybody else finished is immaterial, if you ran it and did it then you're a winner.

I feel the same way, I just started the C25K because a friend suggested it. There are a couple of races coming up here on the island in about 2 months but not sure I would have the confidence to actually join one. It's a small island and if I managed to look like an idiot it would be really demotivating.

Any races that I've taken part in have all had a very supportive atmosphere. No-one has been pointing or laughing at those bringing up the rear, all people see is someone with determination and courage, and they tend to get lots of applause as they make it across the line.

Chances are you wont be last - some of the faster runners might get an injury or a stitch which forces them to slow down or walk for a while. And even if you do come last, so what? Someone has to!

I agree, people are so encouraging and supportive for this! A few years ago my sister and I took part in a 21km hike through mountainous terrain challenge and came in near the end, people still cheered. Being almost last (and exhausted) didn't bother us, we were just happy that we accomplished it :)
