cutting out bread, pasta, rice, potatoes

Hi everyone :-)

I started getting healthy Jan 1st, I've totally changed my eating habits and work out five to six days a week. I started out weighing 153lbs, currently weighing 146, I'm 5'9 with a fitness goal of 135lbs. Most importantly though is looking fit (toned butt, thighs, abs). I cannot get below 145, and I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong, I'm on a calorie diet of 1450, so I'm wondering if i cut out breads, rice, potatoes, and pasta if this help get me below the 145 mark. An going to try this for a week and see what happens, but if its a waste can someone let me know :-) thank you!!!

Rather than cutting out all those foods, why not ask for some expert advice?

Our stats are similar, I'm just an inch shorter than you and I eat a lot more than 1450 calories. I also got stuck around 145lbs, but have recently dropped to 134lbs without cutting out anything - I still eat bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta, as well as burgers, pizza, desserts, and drink alcohol.

I changed my calories and macros about a year ago according to the info in this topic: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/912920-in-place-of-a-road-map-3-2013

I've had the best success since that time, eating well, working out 5-6 days a week, an hour or less per day. I do weights (and not the big heavy stuff, much as I'd like to, just don't have access to a gym, so I do my best with my dumbbells at home) three days a week and I I run three days (avg 4-5 miles), and always take at least one day off for rest.

The fat and inches have come off, and the pounds soon followed. Have a read through that topic, read it two or three times if necessary, it's a lot of info, but he walks you through it all step by step. It's good stuff.

Great info in the link LoraF posted too!

Unless you have an allergy, intolerance or other medical issue for which you need to cut out those foods - it's likely a waste. Some people find that reducing carbs helps with their appetite and therefore stops them exceeding their calorie goal, but it doesn't sound like you're exceeding your calorie goal anyway. If you cut your carbs, you'll probably have a sudden drop in weight - but it will be water weight, not fat. Carbs naturally retain a certain amount of water, and when you reintroduce them, that will return. You do not need to cut carbs to lose weight - I regularly eat pasta, bread and potatoes (and occasionally eat rice) and did so throughout my weight loss.

From your height and weight, you are already a healthy weight, and are probably fairly lean. Any fat you lose now is going to come off very slowly. Can I ask why you've picked 135 as a "fitness goal"? Do you know your body fat percentage? If your goal is looking fit and "toned", then my advice would be to not worry so much about what the scale says, eat closer to your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) and get into strength training, if you're not already. Rely less on the scale, and go by tape measurements, photos, how you look in the mirror, and how your clothes fit.

If you currently eat breads, rice, potatoes, and pasta then cutting them out will most likely get you under the 145 mark. But that initial loss is going to be mostly water. Whether it causes a fat loss will depend on how much of those things you currently eat, and whether you replace those calories with something else.

Start changing with you are eating and change up your daily work outs. I have been doing Spinning and Zumba because I am an instructor but I was plateauing. I started to add in yoga and Jillian Michael's 30 day shred and am seeing some more come off and seeing a change in my muscles. Hope this helps.

One benefit of cutting out these items that your relative protein intake could increase as a result of having a lower carbohydrate intake. But please never believe anyone who says these are "bad foods". Foods like these have kept our species alive for thirty thousand years.
    With love,

The problem with cutting all that stuff is what's going to happen when you start eating them again. Unless you're ok with never eating any of those again, I'd find another alternative. Getting to the goal weight is nice and all, but you don't want to get the weight back.

I've never had much of a taste for rice, pasta, bread, potatoes. That said, I've been extremely overweight AND at a normal weight no matter how much of my food was made up of carbs. Eat the way you like to eat. The calorie deficit is what matters. The links given to you above are great advice/information.

    Bump....

I decided this morning that I'd cut wheat because I think it's causing some of my stomach upset so I think I may have an intolerance for it. But I'd like to come back and read more on the subject.

By just eliminating wheat/gluten from our diet, my wife and I saw a drop in our weight (even without limiting/reducing our carbs).

Maybe you want to give that a shot, it was a near instant health improvement for us.
