Okay, this is basically a rant here, but I do actually need some help. (You can skip to the last few paragraphs if you don't want to read everything, that's my real problem- the first few paragrpahs are just rambles, and also to let you know why I'm so angry, since I'm normally not that angry).

Last night I got about 3 hours of sleep. I don't know why, but I just kept waking up every 15 minutes, like my body didn't want me to sleep. So, I'm cranky to begin with.

Then, I had a doctors appointment (with an ob/gyn). He's taking me off my birth control and switching me to a new one. I leave to study abroad in Germany in another 2 months (or so), and I'm pissed! He took me off Yaz because it was recently discovered that it can cause blood clots (when I started Yaz, it was a new medication and nobody knew this). Now, he's starting me on a different medication that is ALSO BRAND NEW on the market. I'm frustrated beyond words. He takes me off medication because it was new and we didn't know the side effects, but now he's putting me on another NEW medicine??!!! And, again, I leave for Germany in another two months- I do not want to have side effects while I'm over there.

After the doctor's appointment, I decided to get a haircut (I was long overdue for one). I gave the lady 5 pictures (yes, FIVE pictures) explaining what I wanted because the last person to do my hair screwed up big time. So, I showed her the pictures, and she looked at them for a whole 3 seconds, then gave them back to me. I asked if she needed to put them up so she would have a reference, but she told me no, she knew what she was doing.
Well, guess what? She screwed up. Again. And she cut 6 inches off my hair when I specifically asked for her to cut no more than 2 inches off. And my bangs look like crap. I normally don't stress over my appearance, but this... God, you'd have to see it.
What also makes me angry is that my mother insists on paying for my haircuts, but she won't spend more than 15 dollars. I tell her I have no problem paying for my haircut (because I would spend 25-35 dollars so I can get a NICE haircut), considering she provides me with food, shelter, etc. But she insists on it. And in the end, I always get screwed over.

Anyways, onto the real problem: Tonight, I'm supposed to go to a friend's house for dinner. I have no clue what's being cooked, and in what ways, etc. Also, after that, we're having a little party with some other people. This party is going to include lots of goodies like brownies, chips, pretzels, soda, yadda yadda.
I have been really good about what I've been eating for the past few weeks- I've kept at or a little above my goals almost every single day. I would totally treat myself at the party tonight, but I can't. Because when I treat myself, I start to binge. I get the taste of the food in my mouth, and then I crave it for WEEKS. I have no willpower though, and when everybody else is eating it's sooooo tempting to eat with them. Sometimes I'm not even paying attention- we'll be playing a board game, then all of a sudden, I've got a handful of chips.
I really don't want to go on a binging streak and eat everything in site. I've managed to lose 20 pounds, plateaued, then started moving the scale again. I really do need to lose weight, and I'm so nervous about the party tonight I almost don't want to go.
What are your suggestions?

    Drink LOTS of water!!!!
This should make you feel full so even when you do nibble you wont take as much.
Also- try writting everything down...or keep a list on you phone just so you can have a running tally.

Take a pack of gum with you. I find that it helps. Sometimes I find my self eating just to be chewing -- so the gum definately help.

Can you maybe make your own healthy snack that would be 'fun' to eat? Or pick up a box of 94% fat free kettle korn and munch on that??

If you know the people well, and are comfortable with them, I'd say have the person sitting next you you whack you if they see you reaching for the unhealthy stuff. If you try to have a bit of fun with it, maybe it will feel less stressful.

Good luck!! I know exactly where you are coming from!!
  • Gum is always helpful with me...and I have no will power when it comes to sweets!! Good luck!

I find I have trouble if I stay in the kitchen at a party, I just munch and munch. Try to stay away from the snacks and chat with people in the living room or outside and that should help a bit.

Bring a veggie tray and some popcorn to snack on. Keep it close by (in reach). You will be surprised how many others will grab for your veggies  I know this because we went out one night for appies. I ordered a veggie tray and they ordered nachos. They ate some nachos then started to eat my veggies. Good thing it was a big tray lol

I am not too successful yet with the party atmosphere, but I do know that when it comes to your health you need to take charge. You need to tell the Doc that you want a tried and true BC Pill, not a new one. You need to advocate for your own health. As with Yaz, Dr's do not always know best. You do have a choice in which one YOU want to take.

It can be really stressful being invited to an event where you know you'll be tempted to over-eat.

I've been really good recently, but I got invited to a cocktail party with some friends I rarely see, so I decided to plan on what I need to do in order to make tonight something other than a fitness disaster. This is my plan for tonight:

    1. I told the host I'd make turkey burger sliders (2oz mini burgers) and stuffed beef sliders for the party. That way I'm helping, and I know what's in the food.

    2. I allotted myself 2 turkey sliders (with bun) and one beef slider (without bun) and entered it into my food diary for dinner. Then I entered the two drinks that I plan to have tonight.

    3. I observed that this cocktail party would put me just over 300 calories above my daily goal.

    4. I went into the exercise database and checked to see what I would need to do to eradicate those 300 calories.

    5. I jogged, walked, did jumping jacks, sit-ups, push-ups, stretched a lot, and drank 1.5 liters of water.

    6. I will go to the party and guiltlessly eat exactly what I planned for. :)

Also, I think gum is a great idea, bashergirl.

So my advice - give yourself permission to eat a certain amount, then go sweat your butt off for an hour. You'll feel good about yourself because you got a treat, and you totally deserved it!

Also, I know what it's like to get a terrible haircut. My condolences. Invest in cute headbands and other accessories to take the emphasis away from the cut until it grows out. That's what I do.

I can't eat gluten, so parties are always a challenge. I find that if I "fill the tank" with good wholesome food before I go, I can nibble on veggies or a salad while I am there. Try to think of parties as a time to socialize and eating not so much.
