Weight loss advice

If you were to give yourself weight loss/healthy food choice advice what would it be? Do you follow your own advice?

If just one, then i'd go with "IIFYM and Fiber".

If you want to lose weight, the NUMBER ONE thing you need to do is eat less calories than you burn. Yes, I follow my own advice. At almost 100 lbs lost, it's working well thus far.

Read a lot, get educated. Take everything you read with a bit of skepticism and find what works for you.

I don't always listen to my own advice but I try.

My number 1 tip would be to not listen to those out there who tell you certain things are bad... don't listen to those who say carbs make you fat, fat makes you fat, protein shakes make you fat, diet coke is terrible and will give you cancer, etc etc. Make your own decisions based on your own beliefs and not someone elses. Make your choices based on research you have read. REAL research.. peer reviewed studies... don't believe something just because a doctor has said it.

Second, don't follow a diet. Fad diets (dukan, 17 day, HCG, south beach, low carb etc) are not sustainable. I will never follow a diet or eating plan that tells you to cut out a food group or a certain food for anything other than a medical need to do so.

I try to eat as natural as possible. Natural doesn't always mean healthy but I try to get most of my meals to be homemade. We limit eating out but do go out now and again. I make our meals out of the freshes foods I can. Whe produce is on sale I buy a lot and than freeze it myself.

I preplan and make big batches of meals. I don't like those frozen dinners or canned foods so I try to have a stash of meals ready to just grab and heat. I make extra dinner for my husbands lunch the next day. When we bring our groceries home I wash, cut and package fruits and veggies. I have a container of veggies ready for a stir fry, one of veggies cut in thin strips to add to spaghetti, fruits pre washed and cut and packaged etc.

Get your nutrients from foods instead of suppliments. I only take a vitamin if I lack something at the end of the day.. if I have calories to spare I will consume something that gets me to that goal. The only vitamin I take daily is a B50 vitamin and a probiotic. I don't even take a multi. Far too often we get our nutrients from food yet still suppliement.

I also have recently tried to cut out extra chemicals in my diet (I don't fully follow this as I still low my diet pop) . I am now making my own bath salt, bubble bath, facial scrub, body scrub, face wash, etc.

Also, I don't strive for quick weight loss. I would rather have a smaller deficit and slower losses and know I am getting proper nutrients and lowering the amount of muscle I lose along the way.

    My advice to myself is:

Stay focused on the whole picture, don't trip over the speed bumps.

    And yes, I follow it.

The only piece of advice I give to myself that I always follow is "No ATM."

My advice is general. Educate yourself and be cynical about everything you read or hear that isn't consistent with your own intuition and experience.

Stop asking other people for advice/help. 90% really don't care, 10% want to sell me something.

I don't follow this because I still fall for "maybe this time someone will help me" crap.
