I really hope no one only reads the original post. Blueberries are NOT the only fruit you can have. Actually, blackberries have even fewer carbs when subtract fiber. Eating low carb does not give you permission to eat a bunch of processed foods that are loaded with sodium. I'll admit, I'm guilty of eating beef jerky and Atkins bars... but I also realize they will have a negative impact on my progress.

Stick to veggies that are leafy and grow above the ground, berries, meat, cheese and eggs.

    THIS....
and why would you bother to post this? Don't you think people who have chosen to limit their carb intake have taken the time to research it and have come up with a plan on their own? I'm not trying to be rude or mean, but honestly... I've read about 50 diet books in my life. I don't really need half arsed info posted with no sources to back it up.
Next time you feel like posting on low carb, at least post links to your source.
    Thanks! :flowerforyou:

"Conclusions: Under planned isoenergetic conditions, as expected, both dietary patterns resulted in similar weight loss and changes in body composition. The LC diet may offer clinical benefits to obese persons with insulin resistance. However, the increase in LDL cholesterol with the LC diet suggests that this measure should be monitored. This trial was registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry at http://www.anzctr.org.au as ACTR 12606000203550."

for every web site you find there is another one to dispute it.. Isn't the internet great! He says, she says.. this site says this, this site says that.. :)

I could never give up fruit. I love bananas, berries, apples, clementines, melons, pineapple... and it is all very healthy for you.

I'm following a slightly low-carb diet (100-150g of carbs a day) simply because I cannot control myself around processed carbs. I could live off of pasta, rice, bagels and bread... and that's not healthy.

So I removed all of those things from my house, and now I eat a lot of protein, veggies, fruit and lower amounts of dairy. I avoid sugar drinks, processed food, junk food, etc. It's working great and I'm not depriving myself!
sounds good to me.. I don't to the fruit, but I eat healthy everyday! Carbs are my downfall too..

Actually - things like whole grains in breads and pasta are good for you.

    Actually, no they aren't.

People follow different diets for different reasons.

There are so many reasons as to why so many of us can honestly tell you why whole grains, breads, and pasta are bad for us.

But, you go ahead and eat them.

And why are they so bad for us? Please do tell

Here is what I have learnt about grains and pasta. Here is how they make you gain weight, and may not be the best option. Carbs.. which these are, go into your blood stream, your glucose levels start to spike, your insulin kicks in. with pasta and grains it takes A lot for your insulin to work and bring your glucose levels back to normal, if the levels never get back to normal the over flow (so to speak) goes into you liver and then it turns to fat! This is why eating lots of carbs makes a person fat, If you eat a grain or a pasta that is full of fiber.( HARD to find and even whole wheat pasta does not have enough.) The fiber eats up the carbs like a little Pac-man.. And the over flow does not go into the liver and turn to fat. I’m not saying grains are bad for you, but it is hard to fine the ones that have high fiber to keep the insulin spikes from accruing. I am no expert, just what I have learnt about grains, pasta, and even some fruits.

Where did you get your information?
I would look at some more reputable sources :)

3 years done at my university studying dietetics/nutrition.
Unless you have a medical problem, insulin is not really the enemy here.

talking about foods that are high in carbs.. ever heard of the Glycemic index on foods? some make your sugar spike some don't even if you if there is no medical problem.. Never said that insulin was the enemy..It just has to kick in and when it does over and over again and people eat lots of carb foods, they not only get fat but, their pancreas can not keep up with the insulin demand and they become diabetic..

Lol once again I have studied this plenty at my university.

I am saying that a sugar spike really isn't a big deal unless you have a medical problem that requires you to limit it.
Eating a higher carb isn't the reason people are getting fat, its eating too many calories (too much food!)
Eating higher carb isn't the main cause of diabetes either, its obesity (once again too much food!).

I fail to see how you are coming to the conclusion that high GI foods are making us fat I suppose.
The only thing I can really say against high GI carbs is that they are delicious, and for some easy to over consume. Even saying that though, it is once again the calories that is the problem, not really the carbs.

well, I have a better study then Book study. I was diabetic and my health made me learn what to do.. it was not calories that changed it. It was low carb. and not even weight loss... so in this case I take life smart over book smart.. No longer diabetic and still heavy.. By watching what spikes my sugar in my foods.. that lead me to become a diabetic!

    n=1 is not credible
Congrats on you taking control of your diabetes, but that doesn't really work to say grains and high GI foods are bad for us.
You had a medical reason to track your blood glucose levels and monitor your spikes though.

and I still do just to see what it does to me.. even though I no longer need to.. And I know what it does when I take in high carbs foods.. Not good! bye.

I lost all my weight and am maintaining it eating all the 'no' foods and eating about 150 - 250g of carbs. So thanks, but no thanks.

I have to agree... you should focus on all the food groups for over all health. Eventually we will all want some bread...and we all NEED fruit for obvious reasons.

Low carb diet - been there done that. The weight is inconsistent, and eventually everything went back double in scale. I rather have moderate food that keeps me losing weight and inches. Everything in this world happens for a reason, so does our food, carbs, sugar, protein, fats or whatever you could name it.

No. Just no. Stop it. You are giving validity to the masses on here who claim low carbers don't know anything about proper nutrition.

I'm glad you have found something that works for you.....

I disagree with your approach and your good and bad foods...

Umm I disagree too. The amount of misinformation and ignorance in this thread is a perfect example of why I don't like to say I eat low carb.

    THAT. SO MUCH THAT.

How do you stay under what MFP says you should be within when it comes to carbs. I almost always go over. If anyone wants to look at my diary feel free to do so. Any constructive comments will be appreciated.

I eat very low carb. And I LOVE it!! I can say it isn't for everyone, though. And yes, if you come off a low-carb diet you WILL gain back weight, but for me I really enjoy the foods I eat and I don't see it as a diet because I never feel limited in what I can eat. I still allow myself cheat days on the weekend where I can "carb load", so I still get to eat all the foods I like!

    Adding my 2 cents...
Cent 1, reading this thread made my head hurt.
Cent 2, adding some more science to the discussion. I'll try and keep it brief.

    Food = Fuel. (duh!)

Food is made up of 3 macronutrients: Carbs, Fat, and Protein. Each of these macronutrients your body processes differently and are used as fuel.

This is a very dumbed down explanation of what happens when you eat low-carb:
When a person eats very low carbs for an extended period of time, their body switches its fuel source from glycogen stores to ketone-bodies. Ketone Bodies (or KBs for short) are what results when your body runs out of glycogen stores and starts metabolizing fat. These KBs become the main source of fuel, replacing glucose. Essentially your body is using its own fat stores as fuel. Your body has entered what is called the state of Ketosis. When a person eats carbs while in a state of ketosis, their insulin spikes and carries the glucose back into the blood, repleneshing the glycogen stores and "kicking" you out of ketosis. Once the body is kicked out of ketosis it can then take 24-60 hours (depending on how many carbs eaten, and the activity level of the person) to use up the glycogen stores and return to ketosis.

Fun Fact: Ketogenic diets (low carb-mid protein-high fat) were originally used to treat people with severe epilepsy, as the brain can efficiently use ketone-bodies for fuel.

I must say that I really love eating a ketogenic diet and I don't see myself going back to a carb-loaded way of life for a long time.

if they saw my low carb diary I do believe I eat better then most non-carbers.. My diet is full of veggies nuts, good protein. They think low carbs means we eat bacon and cheese all day. NOT!
