I am looking to getting new running shoes. I want to spend under $80, but have something that is comfy. I won't be running anything over 5 miles for a long time as I still have a fairly weak knee from having a partial tear in my ACL. Any suggestions?

I suggest you go to a quality running store in your area. Have them evaluate your run, and also discuss your injury. They'll have several models that should match what you need. You probably will have to pay more than $80, but it's worth it, as opposed to going to the store blindly, getting an "$80" shoe, that could hurt you more than help. Go to the professionals.

I have always had good luck with New Balance... if you wanted to get fancy you could try some Vibram 5 fingers

Your best bet is to go to your local running store. The first thing they need to do is *kitten* the type of shoe you need based on your gaite. They get you to roll up your pants and walk around in your bare feet and they watch. It's very important to get the right kind of shoe.

Once you know what type of shoe you need (I believe there are 3 different types, but I forget what they're all called), you'll be able to choose from the selection there. You should be able to get something for $80, but you might have to spend a little more. Running is a cheap form of exercise (compared to gym memberships, bikes, treadmills, etc.), so investing in a good pair of shoes is the only cost incurred.

I tried on 5 or 6 pairs and narrowed it down to 2 that both felt pretty good. One was $120 and one was $180 (canadian $), so you can guess which pair I picked. They're Mizuno brand shoes (I wish I knew the model/style name) and they've been great!

However, everyone's feet are different and everyone's running style is different, so relying on what works for someone else doesn't mean you'll like 'em.

    Good luck!

Edit: I tore my ACL and had it repaired back in 2000 (when I gained most of my weight) and now I have no troubles with the knee at all - it's like it never happened. I had to wear that clunky brace for a while - I'm guessing they gave you one of those? Get the knee fixed and ditch the brace - you'll be glad you did.

recurring response - GO GET FITTED for your shoes and dont skimp on the money. You will be able to run easier and more comfortable than you ever have! Theres a reason its a recurring theme, its the best advice you can get and take...no one here knows how your arches are , which part of your foot you land on, how your stride is etc...GO GET FITTED !

Horrible advice!!! Especially for someone who has an ACL injury. Barefoot running is a gradual progression.
