HRM question ~should I be concerned?

I just got out of a zumba class that was incredible. Yes I got tired, but I had a great time!

My HRM stated that I burned 565 calories and my average heart rate was 135, which is good, right in the zone. My problem is, it said my MAX heart rate was 198 (that's at 107%!!) :noway: Should I be nervous about that? I was working hard, but didn't realize it jumped that high. Should I be concerned or go to the doctor?? Sorry, growing up overweight (all my life) my biggest fear has been that of having a heart attack... so, anything that involves my heart, freaks me out.

Oh, my pulse seems fine now, but I'm just being paranoid, I guess... and wondering. I like the HRM for the calories burned, but sometimes too much information, might not be a good thing for someone like me. LOL

I get that too, you really have to control your breathing thru the more intense routines. I check my polar quite often to check my heart rate so I can help it go down.

That is so very true!!!! And sites like WebMD can be extremely dangerous.

In my opinion, if you weren't hurting, and you are doing fine now....I would just keep an eye on yourself during workouts. That's not to say that you need to panick with every little HR spike...but don't ignore them either if it really alarms you.

BUT...if you are seriously concerned...it never hurts to ask a doctor.

Sometimes my HRM goes haywire with the chest strap and I hve to use the finger touch to sync them again.

If your heart rate got to 198, then that is probably your MAX HR, or just under. The equations that are used in various places are just a rough estimate and everyone is different. Most HRM will allow you to adjust your MAX HR and thus, HR Zones. I am not a doctor but got this from reading about it. The MAX HR is defined as the maximum bpm YOUR heart can reach. It reached 198, so... it's safe to say your MAX HR is at least 198. Now this obviously goes without saying that you need to be sure this is safe, and talking to your doctor might be a good idea. At 45, my HR has reached 191, it's max so far. I also read that a person's MAX HR does not decline with age much, assuming good health. Most of all listen to your body and don't push it that high if it feels like you are pushing too hard. Mine only approaches it's max when I do an all out sprint while interval training. Depending on your conditioning, it might be wise to set a safe max a bit lower than your physical max, at least until you talk to your doctor about it.

I'm 26 and my max HR is 211!

When I do spinning or body attack, I usually average around 176 for the class ...

Thanks for your feedback, everyone! I made it through the night, so I hope I'll be ok. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one whose heart rate has gone that high.

I do think I'll have to try to keep an eye on my watch more in class. It beeps at me, but the music is so pumping, I can't hear it when it beeps at me...

Mine's went over the recommended rate for me, and I got worried also, but sometimes I think the HRM aren't alwasy 100% accurate either.
