Gym = Social gathering?

So for the past few weeks now I have noticed a few girls going to the gym. They are younger girls, probably early 20's. They come in the changing room chatting and giggling away, then... DO THEIR MAKE-UP!? One girl laughed and called it her "gym make-up" They must have looked at me and thought I was rough, hair tied back and not even a trace of make-up on. (horrific sight LOL)
Then when they go in the gym they stand about for ages chatting, usually with one sitting at a machine not actually doing anything and I either have to wait it or use something else until they move. They giggle so loud, and when they do actually do something it just looks so half hearted. The girl who said she had her gym make-up said "eeeek, I have a bit of sweat on my face!" then dabbed her face really carefully, looked at the other girls and said "Has my mascara run?"
Don't get me wrong, these girls do not annoy me, in fact they amuse me and make me smile, (they are not rude either, in fact quite pleasant and always smile at me) but I really wonder why they come to the gym? They would have to pay a monthly membership which is not exactly cheap. Perhaps the gym is the new "in place to meet" LOL
Does every gym have this group?

they might just be there to pick up.0

Yes, but in my gym it's the guys. seriously. There are groups of guys, usually around the 30-40 age group, who don't seem to actually do anything except stand around talking s**t. Drives me crazy.0
-
I doubt they pay for the membership with their own hard earned money
I go to the gym at 3am, only once has there been anyone else there, and I found it very awkward. I really don't like other people around while I run on the treadmill like an elephant with 3 feet.0 -
We have a group of older people that stands around the bench press and talk. I talk to people at the gym. I get in a good workout every time I"m there but I also take a few minutes and talk to people.0

they might just be there to pick up.
I thought that too, but now I am not so sure. the gym is on two levels, all the machines on the top floor with all the weights and things on the bottom. You enter and leave the gym on the bottom floor and they tend to spend all their time upstairs.
One girl said she would not be caught dead on the bottom because it smells of sweaty men... LOL
Oh... as I was typing that, a thought popped in my head... what if they "like girls" and want to pick up some more girls to join their "group" hehehehehe
I might have to stop smiling at them :O0 -
There are teenage-ish girls and guys that go to my gym primarily to hangout. Hell there are middle aged men that seem to go there to primarily hang out. If THEY were wearing gym makeup I might be worried.0

I don't see anything wrong. They're not annoying, they wanna look good while they do their social gathering. If they're hogging up a machine and notreally using it, you can always walk up to them and ask "May I use this real quick please?" and I'm sure they won't have a problem. They're paying for the gym fees just like you are. If they wanna use up their money for giggling there, who are we to judge?
I don't really get the problem. You should be focusing on your workout rather than what other girls are doing. It sounds like you're annoyed by them not taking the gym as sacredly as you do. Sounds like you're the problem to be perfectly honest. Get over it0 -

except that she already said she didn't have a problem with them, she gets on well with them. Don't be so aggressive.0 -

Don't have a problem then why make a thread about them? Is she expecting US to find a problem with them?
"I don't have a problem with them but they have this really annoying giggle and they barely use the gym and they use the gym for makeup and I can't use the equipment because they're not using it. But I don't have a problem with them. In fact, they're very pleasant and always smile at me"0 -
No. I think she simply started a discussion.0

No. I think she simply started a discussion.
So did I. Which is, to get stop looking at others and focus on her own workouts and ask them to move if she needs to use the equipment when they're not using it.0 -

WOW... seriously what crawled up your *kitten* and died?
I was merely making an observation. It was something I had noticed and wondered if others had noticed. I don't have an issue with them, they are young girls having a bit of fun, I said it made me smile. I am a little curious as to why they would pay a membership for a gym and not really get much benefit, but each to their own, I am not "bothered" or annoyed by it, simply curious.
But hey, I guess after making a couple of threads you already "know" me therefore feel qualified to make such judgements on my character... You have an amazing talent there0 -

You have some issue my love... talk about 2 add 2 making 10...
Please could you point out where I said they had an annoying giggle? Where did I say they use the gym for make-up? (I said they put on "gymmake-up") Yes sometime they sit about on machines, but I can work around that, if they are hanging about the leg press, I will go and use another machine until they move, it is not that big a deal. Like I said... an OBSERVATION.
Just like I am about to make an observation about you.... You are looking to start a heated debate on the internet for sheer entertainment.0 -

lol, I go at 5am for the same reason. graceful runner I am not!0 -

 You should hear me on the treadmill. Stampeding water buffalo make less noise. I thought I'd be quieter when I got smallish, but nope!
@OP except for having to get them to move off a piece of a equipment you want to use, they don't sound too bad. My gym lacks the type, though. Instead it has terminators disguised as elderly men and women (I seriously still have to lower the weight on some machines when I go behind them) and some serious lifters. Haven't seen any makeup there yet, except whatever is dripping off faces. It does get me in 'serious mode' when I go there.0 -

So OP. What was the point behind this thread? I am seriously curious now. Was it:
a) To brag that you workout and others don't?
b) That they're somehow inferior because they use makeup and don't workout as hard as you do?
c) That they're socializing and gym is not a place to socialize?
d) Would like to suggest that young girls like these are not serious and shouldn't be taken seriously by others?
e) Something else that you will now makeup and pass up since you just realize how judgmental you sound
Seriously curious. I know many threads are pointless and I've made a few myself but this doesn't sound like a pointless thread. So, my curious mind would like to know, whats the point of this thread?0 -
I really don't mind people who go to the gym, when it seems like training is not their real purpose, as long as;
They are not in my way and they don't want to chat (other than could you help me, spot me etc, which is no problem).
If you want to sit and chat, remove your backside from the piece of equipment your not using so that someone else can, and take yourself off to Starbucks and have a frapawapachino or whatever. I don't use your chair in Starbucks for dips do I!
In all honesty there aren't many people at my gym like that, we all nod to each other and that's about it. Lot's of people getting on with their workout, not all gyms i've used have been like that though!0 -

Because I felt it, a pointless thread just to get talking about something. No ulterior motive. You have said it yourself, you have some pointless threads, this is just yet another pointless thread in among the thousands of pointless threads
I really do feel you might need to get out, speak to someone, or do something... You are massively over thinking and making something of nothing... I thought that is what women were supposed to do.
Seriously, take this thread for what it is... Boring chit chat.0 -
I went to the gym for 3 years and spent more time talking than actually working out. It showed too, cause In the 3 year period I made absolutely zero muscle gains.
Bloody pointless.0 -

Ah so its settled then. You will stop making judgmental posts about girls who do not bother you and are in fact nice to you and who's only fault is that they don't use the gym the way you like it and I will stop telling you to stop judging people for no reason.
Its a win win! See what happens when you communicate. We solve problems. Together! Now, go and workout that anger you have against those nice girls. Maybe that's the reason they don't need to sweat it out. They don't have resentment about others!0 -
OP, I love that you enjoy their joy! We should all remember how exciting it is to be young and want to "be like the grown ups". I remember hanging around the gym when I was 17, too.
They're learning about the gym in their own way and it will probably help them be more comfortable working out when they get older and really need it. It's refreshing to hear someone who doesn't just feel contempt towards young people. Those girls are NOT smoking, drinking or otherwise doing unhealthy things...nor are they committing crimes or being mean/hurtful to anyone (at least while they're at the gym) .
If all young people were like them, this world would probably be a better place.
We should all try to be more tolerant of others AND learn to enjoy the innocence of youth. Most of us understand your positive attitude towards these girls. Just ignore the rest.
Peace!0 -

Presumably because they would appreciate the value of money more and make better use of the services if they were paying for them? But I appreciate that's not a given and maybe they are happy to pay for the impression of exercising ("I went to the gym for an hour today...(and sat around the entire time chatting)").
OP, I think some people do use the gym as a social gathering, and members like the ones you've described have less maturity/motivation than the majority of gym users. I don't really find your assertion that they are there because they "like girls" particularly amusing, but never mind.
I know you're not really annoyed with those at your gym, but I reserve my wrath for people who pay to go the cinema and insist on talking throughout the film. I find that to be a more odd place to socially gather for a chat than the gym! But that's a whole new thread!0 -
Ha! My MOTHER does this!
She's part of a fairly sizable group of women in their 40s to 60s who all go to the gym at the same time and hang around for cappuccinos afterwards!
I've never personally witnessed this ritual.. But you can just imagine, can't you?
I know for a fact that on occasion they help eachother fake tan in the changing rooms....0 -

OK, so in all honesty, I am very worried about you... Do you have some unresolved issues? Do people judge you? Are you taking out your frustration on me and mis-reading EVERYTHING? Do you need a friend? Do you need a pill? I have some genuine concerns about you now...
I have no idea how else I can say this or how else I can make you understand... I am NOT in any way shape or form "judging" the girls, they have absolutely no baring on my life whatsoever... I was merely making a random observation.
Anyway, you are beginning to bore me now, so I will leave you to carry on making your weird comments, have fun0 -

A lame attempt at backing out of a thread you made "observing" other folks. But thats fine, as long as you realize that its not cool to judge, err, "observe" people like that and then make "pointless" (your words) threads on these forums
PS. I'm not the only one in this thread who thinks you're judging them. Just saying.0 -

Exactly...and we need to be tolerant of "older folks" (me being one of them) who are healthier simply due to the social aspect of going to the gym, even if they NEVER work out. It's very easy for "seniors" to become depressed when they lack a social outlet.0 -

Re bolded area:
See thats the thing. How can we judge these things. We don't even know if these girls are in fact there just to show off their makeup. I mean, I go to the gym for literally 25 minutes 3 times a week. To many of the "bros" there me following stronglifts and lifting specific weights which seems small right now, is probably a waste of money and they can easily say that about somebody like me too. We can presume many things. Its easy. Not right, but easy. I don't think you're judging, I'm just replying to you since you mentioned it0 -
The gym is totally social!
This is why my water bottle is filled with vodka.0
