I talked to him since he knows about training stuff and he asked me how much I weighed to give me an idea of what reccomendations he would make for how long to do the elliptical trainer to reach my goal in 6 months. He said I think your scale is way off on what it is telling you. you weigh a lot less than what it is saying you do.
then my friend jessica told me the same thing. you don't look like you weigh 180 pounds.

Does the fitness room have a different scale you could use?0 -
unfortunately they don't have a scale yet otherwise I would use it.0
-
have you weighed at your doctors office? I would trust theirs before I would trust any home or training room scale.0
-
People don't think I weigh as much as I do either. I think it depends on how well you're 'packed' - I'm an ex-jock and I've always been pretty muscular.
Is your doctor's scale pretty much in line with yours?0 -
Oh I get that a lot too! People get surprised that I weigh that much when really it doesn't show0
-
I weigh 20 pounds more than people think. I think its funny, but I love the muscle, If it were the other way around,,,yikes!0
-
I am the athletic build type and most of my weight is carried in my thighs as opposed to my stomach. My step grandma has a doctor's scale at her house.0
-
another reason not to weigh! a number means nothing, its all about how you look!0
-
Your scale is what you use. Right or wrong, its consistent. Calibrate it with a bag of flour or something along those lines. Even if your scale isn't totally accurate, did he answer your question based on what you told him? I mean can it really be THAT much off? No one believes I weight what I do either. Good Luck!0

How do you calibrate you scales at home? I am curious0 -
So... you took the advice of a guy who eyeballed you, rather than a machine specifically designed for this use? Uh huh. Yeah. Go get a scale.0
-
some people carry weight much better than others, i carry mine evenly so i dont have it all on my belly or all in one spot so people never believe my weight x0
-
My mother and I also have muscular/athletic body types, and weigh more than one might guess. I love it!
I'm more concerned with my body fat % and measurement changes than the numbers on the scale, so whether it's right or wrong, my home scale is fine for me.0 -
People don't believe I weigh as much as I do either by the way I carry my weight. They usually think I am a good 20-30 lbs less than I am0
-
Like you I carry my weight all over so according to some 'I carry it well'....If you aren't loving the weight then lose it! Don't let others tell you how much or how little to lose.0
-
Why don't you solve the problem and buy a bathroom scale? There like $10 and last years.0
-
the guy at the gym is actually a fitness trainer for the school. he was who I was asking.0
-
No one believes that I weigh over 200 pounds. But I do. 217 to be exact. Noone believed I weighed 300 pounds either. But I did.0
-
he said to to the ellipitical 25-30 minuets 3 days a week to get the proper calorie burn on my work outs. to reach my goal. but to build up to it and start with level 1 on it first.0
-
Is he a circus weight guesser?
Looking like you weigh less than you do is a good thing, and shows how meaningless the scale is. That doesn't mean your scale is wrong, though.0 -
For this reason, I used to always do those carnival games where the person guesses your weight. They'd always be WAY off, and I always won a prize!
They'd always guess around 125. Then I was 140+! WINNER for being a fatty (scale wise)!
Now I actually do weigh 125 lbs....and people guess me around 130 lbs. :sad:0 -
I'm sorry, but you can't judge how long and what type of workout to do based on a person's current weight and goal weight. How's your diet? Are you eating less than you burn? What's your BMR? You can lose weight through diet alone, without exercising at all, so that's why I ask these questions, as prescribing a fitness regimen specifically for weight loss based only on a person's weight with no idea as to the type of diet they are eating is suspect at best.
That being said, 30 minutes 3 times a week on the elliptical would be good for you. Did he mention strength training at all? Your eally need to add that in as well or some of anything you lose will be muscle, not just fat. You also really need to make sure your diet is in check, or no amount of exercise will make you lose weight. You cannot outtrain a bad diet.0 -
have you weighed at your doctors office? I would trust theirs before I would trust any home or training room scale.
My doctor's scale reliably adds 5-8 pounds. Every time. YUCK!0 -
Honestly, I don't think the value in having a scale is the number it gives you. Unless a scale is regularly calibrated it isn't going to be accurate. In a gym I used several years ago, they had three scales. All three of them gave different weights, and the variation between them was five pounds. When I pointed this out, I was told "Gee, that weird. We just had them calibrated."
I think scales are good for monitoring change. I use the same scale every weigh in day: the cheap scale in my bathroom. I'm more concerned about seeing a change in the numbers over time. A measuring tape is also a great way to track physique changes, but I can't be bothered with that.0 -

Same thing happened to me, it added a good 2-4lbs, however, it was after I'd had my breakfast, so I blame that partially!0 -
I think people just generally don't have a good idea of what certain weight looks like and they don't want to guess high on someone's weight so they always give your their low ball number. I had an ex-boyfriend call me up and tell me I look like I weigh 115 pounds in my most recent Facebook picture, that's 40+ pounds less than I weigh, I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean my scale is wrong.0
