Using weights during exercise

I don't have any weights at all at home & have been using Exercise DVD's which regularly use them, how much of a difference do they really make? Is it worth my while investing in them? Will it really negatively impact doing the same actions as the DVD in which they use weights - without using them?

I know weights will have atleast a bit of an effect if they're widely used; but how much?
