Los Angeles ideas?

I'm going out to Los Angeles in May for a week, and I've never been there before. My husband will be at a conference for the first half of the week, so I'll be on my own during the daytime. Any suggestions for what I should do? Neat places to go? Places to avoid? Good places to eat? Thanks!!

    I've been told I should mention the general neighborhood, since the LA area is so big: the first part of the week, we are at a hotel near the Convention Center, by City West, the Historic Core, and the Jewelry District. After the conference, we'll have to move someplace else for a few days. We were even talking about renting a car and going somewhere away from LA for three days, but we don't know where we would go. Many thanks for input!
