Maybe we have to ban texting while walking?
I just saw, for the 2nd time in a year, someone who was texting while walking in a parking lot, where the texter walked into a moving car. The first time the woman didn't really get hurt, but today I think it is possible that the woman broke her leg? I don't know how bad it is, but I was right there when she was hit, and I tried to help her up, but she couldn't get up, she said, and I waited with her for an ambulance.
I'm not perfect. I occasionally - maybe 3x a year - might call someone while driving, but honestly, I am one who usually does pull over to make a call.I even use my headset most of the time. But I can tell you that my car has almost been hit about 5x in the last ear by someone who was on a phone, and in fact, it was hit, but no damage, by someone parking a truck while he was on the phone. He claimed it happened because it was a new truck and he didn't have a feel for the size of it..... and I told him "Well, you would have a better chance if you weren't on the damn phone".
This whole digital thing is way too dangerous, IMO.
Is that text worth a broken leg? I wonder if she will do it again?
Oh, and about a month ago, a woman on a phone started to back out of a parking space and almost hit my daughter..... I mean it was real close, and rather than really get in the woman's face, I just took my hand and slapped her trunk a few times really hard and yelled "Get off the damn phone!"

It's all about multitasking, in my opinion. If you can keep focused on your surroundings as you text, to avoid dangers such as incoming vehicles have at'er.
If not...well it's better to be safe and sorry.
It's completely discretionary though. I doubt something like that will ever make it into any bylaws.0 -
Touche.
I'm the clumsiest person I know, so I always stop when I'm texting. I'd break my leg for sure!0 -
Yeah.... I fell down the steps texting and walking. Lol that was the end of that.0

I definitely have to stop in order to text. I've tried walking and texting and it comes out gibberish! Much easier for me to stop, text, and then continue. I USED to use my mobile while I drove...but not anymore.0

Outlaw inattentiveness.
I remember one time as a kid, I was so engrossed in comic book I was reading while walking home, that I fell into a ditch. :laugh:0 -
its actually impossible for you to multitask as much as you would like to.0

We can't just outlaw everything. Many people don't pay attention. If not texting, they might be talking to a person doiung the same thing.0

Nevada is actually already trying to get this into law...so I'm sure there will be other states to follow.0

I was being SOMEWHAT facetious, but honestly, I feel bad for the people who ran into the two texters... I realize we can't truly protect against stupidity, but I'm at a loss as to what to do....
God's honest truth.... a few years ago, while in Puerto Rico on vacation, my wife and I saw a guy driving a motorcycle while texting.0 -
Let the accident prone subtract themselves. I'm tired of these bans. You can't ban stupidity and I dare you to try.0

It drives me nuts when people text and walk around in the mall or grocery store! Sometimes I can't navigate the grocery aisles because of dumbass people with their noses in their phones. I've also seen a pedestrian get hit because they walked into traffic. Idiots!0

ya I can't walk and talk (to a rl person) ..want proof ? I walked right into the conveyor/counter at work last night, while trying to talk to a co-worker .. then late walked backards (trying to turn around) into a pole .. ya :blushing:
btw I work at wal-mart, so you can understand, the counter is huge, so there is no valid excuse0 -

Could Not agree more....
Lets just Ban Breathing while were at it :0)0 -
A ban is not the answer. It could never be enforced any more than talking on the phone while driving can be enforced. People are gonna do it. My goal is to be as alert as possible when in or around traffic. Hopefully people will learn to be more attentive before they are seriously injured. On the other hand, people have been distracted by their own thoughts and walked into traffic. My adult daughter was hit by a car while lost in thought in a parking lot. Witnesses say she walked right in front of a car at the last second. Bad things can happen. it pays to be careful and aware.0

my texting and walking game is on point #peripheral, but u cant make a law to curb stupidity, whether its texting, daydreaming, enjoying some fries, someone who isnt paying attention to their surroundings are putting themselves at risk0

I was 10, when I first came to the states, I was plowed into by a car in a school zone. Before this I never looked both ways, didn't care either way.
I broke both legs, my hips, all of my ribs, and practically all of my teeth (thank heavens they were baby teeth).
Pins, traction, 10 months in a body cast, 7 months of rehabilitation to learn how to walk again.
The result?
I look both ways when I cross streets now.
If you survive, you'll be smart if you learn from your mistakes. And guess what? You don't live long enough to make all the mistakes out there anyways. You need to recognize and learn from the mistakes from others as well.0 -
Turns out the woman did break her leg. I found out from a neighbor of mine. The woman who walked into the car was her cousin. I'm hoping ( guessing ) that she will have learned her lesson.0

Come visit NYC! Walking down the street everyone is texting, talking, taking pics and movies... it is an obstacle course! And yes I text and walk all the time!0
-
That be nanny state to do that.0

Call me cynical and even "mean" but Nah... I call it survival of the fittest.
To me it's right up there with crossing a street at night inbetween the street lights wearing dark clothing.... if you get hit it's your own damn fault.0 -
Just what we need, the govt in more control of our lives.
