So lately, to include tonight, I am noticing it is much harder to get my heart rate above 60-70% of my MHR. I am 43 and in pretty good shape. I workout 6 days/week. I spin 2 times a week, do boot camp and various other cardio/interval training (20-30 mins max) as well as lift weights and do Pilates and yoga. Tonight i felt extremely fatigued when i was lifting and sort of shaky. I drank a sample of some branch chain amino acid supplement being offered by the local GNC in my gym before hitting spin in hopes it would boost my energy. It did not. In fact, i felt like i was expending a lot of energy/ effort despite feeling sluggish and as if my whole body was filled with wet concrete...everything just felt like a lot of effort. The odd thing is, despite feeling like i was putting in a ton of effort, every time i did a pulse check (carotid for 15 seconds) i got a heart rate of about 120-125 bpm. Could this be a sign of overtraining. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

  • a resting heart rate of lower than 60 bpm is called bradycardia. it can be unhealthy and indicate a problem with your heart, however is also very common for people who are very athletic. in this case (which i believe your is) it is not a problem at all, and simply means your fit. there is no symptoms in this case and nothing needs to be done about it. its just your body adjusting :)

I saw no indications of this in her post. If you're feeling extremely sluggish thru a few workouts try upping your calories and/or taking a week off from working out. I have breaks scheduled regularly throughout the year and use them to ward if fatigue

Thanks, my resting heart rate is low, but i do attribute that to just good cardio condition. However, my question was really aimed at my heart rate DURING. A workout. Sometimes, despite how hard i feel i am working out and pushing as hard as i truly feel i can, my heart rate still remains on the low end, or below, the minimum recommended heart rate range. So, being i am 43 My goal range should be between 115-150 beats per minute (bpm). Last night on the elliptical trainer i barely moved from above 112-1120 bpm and tonight in a vigorous spin class my pulse was between 120-125 pretty consistently thru the class, despite my perceived effort feeling as though it should be much higher. In the recent past i used to hoover around 140-148. Just wondering if it could be a sign of overtraining?
