So today I got myself a new used mauntain bike for summer and it's almost brand new...the previous owner barely used it...anyways, the bike has its own water bottle that fits in and slides only into the way the water bottle is designed. Now after my husband and I picked it up I took the bottle and boiled it with water and bleach and washed it very thoroughly and filled it up with water and planned to use it... my husband shouted "ewww that's disgusting, you're going to drink out of a water bottle that has been used by who knows who?!" I told him yeahh lol I boiled it and it's plastic. I don't think it should have any nasty desiases after I disinfected with bleach and boiling water? So what do you guys think. I haven't drank out of it yet...but I don't think it's that big of a deal! Would you drink out of it and use it?

I would buy a new bottle but I wouldn't want anyone using my gross old bottles either.

    It's not a big deal. It's a totally personal thing. It's sanitary.

Exactly and dishes and cutlery, but if you are concerned, the cost for a new one shouldn't be that much

I'm with the majority....you've sanitized and disinfected it a lot already, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it did bother you, I'm sure you can order a new one from the maker of the bike/bottle.

I'd use it too - bleach & boiling water should have killed anything that may have been growing on it. You pick up more germs on public door handles, faucets, chairs etc than you will from that water bottle.

^ This. I do know people who carry their own chop sticks/table wear but that's carrying things a bit far for me.

Boiling should be just fine. If you wanted some extra security, try adding a few drops of bleach to some water and scrub all parts well.

I would use it, be careful if you decide to put it in the dishwasher though as it may melt, it gets pretty hot in there! I melted the kids drinking bottles, lol.

That's my thoughts, too. I don't keep track of everyone who's used the glasses, plates, and cutlery in my cupboards. When I went through basic training, my canteen had probably been used by others for years before I touched it. I drank from it all the time and I didn't die or get sick. Mechanical (scrubbing / getting dirt off) and chemical (sterilizing) cleaning should be plenty.

you most likely come into contact w/more germs/bacteria etc touching things all day long than that poor little water bottle could think of....

I do not think mauntain bike desiases are transmissible to humans.
