TDEE question....

Good arvo fellow MFP'ers!
I wonder if you could please shed some light. I have recently been enlightened with regards to using TDEE for calorie consumption.
I have two questions:
Should I be eating back exercise calories?
Also I am still Breastfeeding my daughter. I log it under breakfast which automatically adds 300 calories to my quota. Should I still do this or in using TDEE should I simply eat my TDEE minus 20% and then not log the Breastfeeding and or exercise?
Thanks in advance!

I think whether or not you eat back exercise calories is based on how you calculated your TDEE. If you factored your exercise in to your math then I don't think you need to eat them back (unless you do extra than normal). For me I find it easier to work it out based on being sedentary as I'm not consistent enough with my workouts and then I eat back my exercise cals.
  • Ah yes I see! That makes sense. I think I looked at the lightly active as I have a one year old I run around after all day and try to walk everywhere we go. Ok so now I just need to decide whether to eat my BF cals or whether to not log them. I'm just about to start the 30DS so it might be worth eating them for now as I don't want to lose my supply. Thank you for your help!

I would definitely eat them back.
  • Hi,
I used the link I found on a "road map" thread thingy. I think it was fat2fit tools or something like that? I input my height, weight, age and it brought up a grid. I then chose the "lightly active" choice, as I'm not sedentary and working out 3-5 times a week (lightly ha!) That gave me a figure of 2200 ish. I then took off 20% leaving me with a figure of 1800 a day.
I'm not so worried about the exercise calories, it's more the BF calories, which MFP suggests as 300 for the age my daughter is!
Thanks in advance for any help!

Depends how you calculated your TDEE, that's what i am trying to find out for the OP

It's hard to calculate it as an activity. I would calc all activity (disregarding BFing) into TDEE and eat TDEE -20% PLUS the 300 for BFing. For supply reasons I think this is the safest route.

So if your TDEE -20% is 1800 (disregarding BFing) then I would set a goal of 2100.
