Have you ever not been hungry for days on end?

For the past two weeks, I have barely eaten anything and what I have eaten, I didn't want. I had to force myself to eat!

Usually, I have a hard time controlling my eating and have to portion out all of my food before I even think about eating it just so I won't over-eat. So this whole not being hungry ever is a new thing for me and it's kind of scary.

I started a low carb diet at the suggestion from my doctor and I was doing great for a week and then.. suddenly not hungry anymore. Ever.
I've lost 12 pounds in just the past week because of how little I've been eating, but I'm not having any pains or any urge to eat.

I even tried to eat something I used to eat before the diet and it made me sick.

Now, if I do force myself to eat, I get full extremely quickly and will often feel sick after eating.

Kind of worried, and I have no idea what is causing this.

Any ideas? :(

I have experinced this when doing diets many times. I think its your body trying to figure out what its going to do. when you change from one diet to the next your body goes through a tail spin wondering what is it going to be today. try sticking to one routine for awhile and see what happens. if you don't feel a change I would ask your doctor

I NEVER recommend a low carb diet. It's actually not very healthy and you have no energy.

Make sure you eat even if you don't want to. You need the calories or your metabolism will shut down and go into fat storing mode (bad news!). Maybe you should stop this diet.

Also - diets are not a good way to go. Once you stop it all comes back, so I recommend just eating healthy to begin with. Eat well and you won't need to diet.

I REALLY struggle with hunger - I have not friends with food for years! I find it is a case of forcing myself to get into a routine. I don't think I will ever be a breakfast person (tut tut, slap on the hand) but I do try and eat as I know my body needs it to function :)

    This is simply not true.

It also depends on how low you are bringing down your carbohydrates. I eat in a lower carb way (50-100g/day), and I have more energy now then I did before. I did have 2 days a couple weeks ago where my appetite was completely gone. I recommend upping your carbs a bit to avoid that in the future or contact your doctor. I ate as much as I could muster those two days, and it came back full force soon enough. Try to include things that are easy to digest such as a banana, chicken broth, or mashed veggies. Hope you feel better soon :flowerforyou:

It's not necessary to go low carb, your doctor probably has minimum nutritional training and doesn't know what they are talking about, like the time mine suggested an 800 cal a day diet.
You don't need to cut out food groups, just eat healthily and with in your macros and the weight will come off. Start to eat right and your appetite will come back :flowerforyou:

Have you spoken with your doctor? Does he have you on any medication in conjunction with the low carb diet?

I do know when I reduced my diet from crazy 3000 plus calories a day to 1500 (with exercise) after about a month I experienced lack of appetite. But when I did eat something, it triggered the hungry mode in me.

Because it has been a few weeks, and you dropped so much in 1 week, please call your doctor to discuss

once i have my daily goals set on MFP, no matter what, i will hit those macros. often times i end up force feeding myself, but i dont care...i always hit my targets. this is especially important when bodybuilding...as for fat loss and general dieting it is equally important so as to prevent any chances of metabolic damage.
speaking of which, low carbing is a bad idea. any extreme diet, low carb, low fat, high protein, all are bad ideas in the long run. something similar to what is happening to you happened to me when i went low carb. ruined my metabolism and didnt lose weight or build muscle..nothing. ever since i brought in a balance of healthy fats and good carbs, its all balanced out and my metabolism is back on track, meaning i experience hunger normally now, which is a good thing.

This is not true. I have been low carb, now Primal ultra low carb for a year, and I am healthier than I have ever been and have more energy than I know what to do with.

I do agree that you must eat, try small amounts often, that might help. try something with a little fat like cheese, it will help give you some of the vitamins you need, but is depending on your choice quite bland and shouldn't upset your tummy. You must try to add to that as it's only going to give you very limited nutrition and you will quickly become sick. Try a meal replacement shake, while in general I don't recommend these, in this case it will help get nutrition into your body. You must try to bring you calorific intake up to normal as soon as possible, this isn't healthy at all. I have odd days where I don't eat a lot, but I prepare high calorie food the next day to make sure I am ok. Take care, undereating is not healthy at all.

Eat more calorie dense foods to up your cals. Avocado, nuts, olives, olive oil. Make sure you are eating enough lean protein sources too.

Low carb cured me of binging. I started at 20 net grams and am at 100ish total grams now quite happily.
  • Talk with your doctor!

There are many things that can cause loss of appetite and weight loss (without actively trying to lose weight). One of the more common causes is clinical depression, which can have many different symptoms, including weight loss, changes in sleep, and loss of energy. There are also more serious problems that are associated with decreased appetite and weight loss, so you should talk with your doctor to help you figure this out!

    Good luck!

I have the same problem on occasion and have been like that for quite awhile. I am not an over-eater and never really have been.. in fact, the lack of regular eating likely has a big part to play in how much weight I gained.
That said, low carb is not necessarily unhealthy if done properly. The reason people dislike this type of diet, is that its unrealistic to obtain at times. (Think atkins low carb. You lose all the weight and then the minute you reintroduce bread into your diet, game over.) Low carb should not make you sick when you try to eat, especially not for 2 weeks. (Of course with any diet there is an adjustment period, but two weeks is pushing it..) You may want to speak with a nutritionist to get advice for your body type and personal health needs.

Though everyone on here, myself included, gives advice with the utmost best of intentions, most of us are not doctors, nutritionists, etc. Though we can give you our experiences, they are just our personal opinions, so please do not let our suggestions make your decisions, especially since you are getting physically ill. You should go back to the doctor to get tests to make sure your levels are good. I have issues with anemia (low iron) and it can cause some of the symptoms you have, so maybe you have a deficiency that needs addressed.

Good luck! I hope you get to feeling better soon!!!

I've had similar experiences. Although I tend to focus on eating breakfast which I used to skip, and I work out a lot more. Since I'm not starving by lunchtime I tend to eat less.

I'm not the authority on this matter so I would listen to some of the earlier posts.

best of luck to you! :)

Pardon me, but your first sentence is way off base. Are you a doctor or a nutritionist? Have you read extensively about low carb eating, or have you even TRIED it? True, it isn't for everyone, because we're all different. But, for those of us who follow this WOE, it's been a godsend. One of the things that happens is that you're not hungry, because you're satisfied by the fats and proteins. Incidentally, my blood pressure is 90 over 60, my blood sugar is normal, my cholestrol is normal, I sleep well and I've lost 25 pounds.

Please Don't give advice about something you know nothing about.

I would agree with this---if you go too low on the carbs, it tends to crush your appetite. Also obesity+vigorous exercise will tend to greatly diminish the appetite as well (not so with normal weight folks---they will usually get ravenously hungry). If you combine the two, I'm not surprised that you have completely lost your appetite. Try adding some good carbs (not sugar or simple carbs) by 10-20 grams or so each day until your appetite is at a level that seems right for you. The level that I aim for is 70-120 grams per day (with the higher amount on my more intense exercise days). At that level, I get good appetite control but don't feel dragged out or sick when I eat. If your appetite doesn't return, you should see your doc.

Also, if you are not lifting weights, you should really try it (even if it is just lifting your own body weight--that works too). Weight lifting really helps the issues that obese folks have to deal with. It majorly helps with insulin-resistance.

One more thing is that you need to make sure that your fat intake is high enough. If your fat intake is too low, it can make you feel pretty sick on a lower carb plan. You can go lower carb OR lower fat--not both, it will make you sick. My fat intake is usually around 90 to 120 grams of fat (I try to get a large portion of that fat as monounsaturates like avocado and nuts).

One side effect of a low carb diet is lack of appetite. I don't know how much fat your consuming but if it's low, which happens a lot when people switch to a low carb diet, consume more.

The bolded part is so wrong. There is nothing unhealthy about eating protein, fats and vegetables.

I just went through this. When I am stressed I tend to undereat. If you look through my diary, you can see in the past 2 weeks I was dangerously low because I had some stuff going on at work. I am slowly building my calories back up because I don't want to pack back on the lbs after basically starving myself.

I just reminded myself how I want to be STRONG not skinny and that I need to watch my intake to have energy to exercise and live. And set reminders on my phone to eat. I feel a lot better after eating right the past few days.

Low carb diets are fine for a lot of people, and necessary for people with type 2 diabetes who want to control their blood sugar with minimal medication.

There are no generalizations that work for everyone. Some people need to diet and then work out their maintenance diet, and they do not gain it all back.

Anyway, back to the original question, sometimes I don't feel like eating much for days, or weeks at a time. My appetite comes back. The important thing, for me, is to make sure that I eat enough that the whole low appetite thing doesn't backfire by leaving me truly hungry, and to remember to moderate my eating when I've got a big appetite. It sounds like low carb may be the thing that helps you curb an appetite that is not directly related to hunger. Eat enough, make sure it's healthy food, and enjoy the benefits of your self-discovery.

Yesterday and today have been like that for me, and I'm not even low carb! I am hoping to see a lower number on the scale on Monday, but who knows. I only weigh myself once a month. I'm sure my appetite will come back. :flowerforyou:

I wish!! I can't even get my appetite to go away for a day (or a few hours) - I'm always hungry!
