Boxing gloves

I'm looking to pickup a good set of boxing gloves for hitting the bag at my gym. I'm not sure what exactly to look for as far as what is a good or bad glove and would like some recommendations for a beginner setup that is still comfortable and reasonably durable from those of you who hit the bag at the gym. I plan on using them 2 times per week.

Can anyone here offer some suggestions or information on what to look for?

Good question! I'll be starting boxing classes soon and will likely end up with info from the gym (It's a women's boxing gym). I'll be sure to let you know what I find out, as I'll be shopping for the same.

hand wraps are great cause they keep your hands in the proper position (for the most part) and they are cheap (less than 10$) and ALSO get gloves. 14oz ones are good, they have a lot more cushion, but I seem to only be able to find 10oz ones in 'women's' gloves (meaning pink ones) mens gloves will work fine as well (which is what I'm using right now).

I second the suggestion to get hand wraps as well as gloves. I don't have my own gloves yet (I borrow them from my boxing gym), but a couple sessions of boxing without wraps did a real number on my knuckles thanks to friction. Not fun!

    Yes, wraps are very important.

You can buy Everlast gloves on Amazon. They are the most readily available quality gloves out there.

I do MMA and kickboxing, i would suggest gel wraps made by Everlast ($15.00 dollars at Wal-mart) and a 12 oz. glove. My gel wraps are gloves that you wear under the boxing gloves, i like these because they are easy to use. They just slip on and off. If not your going to have to learn how to tape or wrap your hands. Common wraps are made out of cloth about 1 to 2 inches wide and if your a beginner and you wrap your hands wrong you can sprain your wrist or brake a knuckle. Boxing gloves can very just stick with a name brand like Everlast or Fairtex. Hope this helps, have fun.... boxing is a awesome workout.

I'm glad you chimed in and mentioned the gel wraps. That was going to be my next question.

Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions. You've all been quite helpful.

Go to an academy, ask for the custom designed gloves brochure. Its like $50-$60 minus the discount. Get the LIGHTEST possible with good padding. It'll depend on where you are in terms of endurance and strength so see if you can ask the coach to loan you some and test it out on the bags. Thats how I did mine

    Can't go wrong with everlast.

I also second the gel wrap gloves.

They're way better than wrist wraps and are less time consuming.

I believe that was the catalogue we were using at my academy. Dunno if they will be able to give you a discount as an individual but if you go to a gym/academy then you can ask them.

Also, as I mentioned. I personally do not like gel wraps for boxing. For MMA and such they're awesome since they give a layer of protection (when you use handwraps under the gel wraps). Gel wraps when used under boxing gloves just mess with the grip, the fitting of gloves, and just don't feel right. I have noticed for me atleast that when using handwraps my punch feel swifter and more "tighter" and have a bit more better form and force to it. Gel wraps in conjunction with handwraps when not using boxing gloves are awesome. Else, with boxing gloves, I don't like them.

Also, handwraps are fairly easy to put on. Even after first try you will easily learn them. They just seem intimidating

I asked about the gel wraps at my gym because I noticed a girl in my kickboxing class was using them. I was told they don't offer the same protection for your wrists as traditional wraps.

I agree with the hand wraps, traditional wraps and a hybrid glove wraps areuch better and help keep your wrists protected from sprains if you have built strength,as for me I only use foam wrap followed by athletic tape , no gloves unless called for like in a figh, but the gel wraps r complete crap!

I learned to wrap my hands with a youtube video and practiced a few times. It's not hard The wraps are good because you can choose where you need a bit of extra support. Everlast gloves from sport authority or big 5 would work fine. I spent too much on mine at the gym and I'm pretty sure I didn't need to. It was the difference between $70 and maybe $35.
