Hi there! My name is Matt and I am here with my cat, Poptart. I’ve had success losing weight, but after the weekend I’ve had, I realised I’ve neglected someone very important in my life.
On Friday, my other cat, Strudel, had to be put down. He had already lost two limbs to diabetes and then he had a coronary and died. I’m sitting here now with his ashes. We’re going to sprinkle them in the garden later and bury his wheelchair. The gravestone is on order.
Now I’m determined to get Poptart down from 25lbs to 8lbs by the end of the year.
I’d love some supportive people to join me on this journey. Especially if you have feline friends that also need to lose weight.

Hey Matt.
Welcome to MFP!
Sorry to hear about Strudel.

Are you for real? If what you have said is true then I'm pretty horrified. You say your first cat died from what appear to be obesity-related illnesses. As his owner you are entirely to blame for this. How could you have let your cat get into such a state? Have you never heard of tough love? Never heard of saying no when he is miaowing for more food?
It's very cute that you had a wheelchair for Strudel but it never should have been needed in the first place.
By all means help your other cat to lose weight but if there is no change in four weeks then please do the only kind thing you can - give him away to someone who actually understands portion control when feeding their cat.0 -

Well this is rude!
First off we're all here for support and motivation and comments like this don't help anybody.
Secondly, maybe it was genetic? Maybe Strudel had bad genes that made her more likely to gain weight?0 -

I didn't realise anyone could be so mean. I'm grieving for Strudel and you want me to give away Poptart? I've turned a corner and I am now starting my journey with Poptart to lose weight so we can live a long healthy life together. I just wanted some support in that.0 -
Welcome, and best of luck on your and your cats journey.
Please do make sure that you don't catch any diseases from Poptart.
Too much poptart could be bad for you.0 -

Hmmmmmmm, this makes it even clearer. You're a sensitive little soul, aren't you? I get it, I really do, but being too sensitive is probably why you fed your cat too many calories. I bet you are the kind of man who will be feeding his cats bits of leftover Easter eggs today because you cannot resist when they look up at you with those big kitty eyes.0 -

Some people on here are disgusting. How could you even suggest that I would lie about one of the most precious companions in my life? Unless you're a cat person you just dont understand what they can give you. This has already been the toughest Easter I've ever lived through and none of you are supporting me.0

I agree - you really aren't putting the health of your cats first, people like you are the reason I have so many.
You have to stop being selfish and put your cats needs ahead of your own. You manybe should get some counciling - sounds like your a feeder to me.
Oh and I accepted your friends request - but now I've seen this I'm not sure. You'll have to prove you really want to change your cats health for the better.0 -
It's great that you are thinking about your cat's health, but this seems like a pretty aggressive weight loss goal. You want to pace this out, or risk sending the cat into starvation mode, which could be very dangerous for you. I've read studies about cats eating their owners while they sleep.0

You should go to your vet to get advice about safe weight loss.0

We can be weightloss buddies! I helped my Charlie lose weight (see my success story here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/943563-does-he-look-thinner-to-you?page=1). You can help Pop Tart. I believe in you!!0

There seems to suddenly be a lot of odd cat threads. Is this an April fool?0

Jerome here is with you. He knows he needs to reject the neighbour's left over KFC and stop chewing through my pizza boxes.
RIP Strudel. May Poptart and Tubs McGee (AKA Jerome) can be friends?0 -
R.I.P. Strudel. You were always my favorite. Poptart lives on, honoring your memory.0

Actually, I'd love to help, but I'm trying to involve my cat more in my exercises, and I need to bulk him up a bit.0 -

Sorry about Strudel. You and Poptart can do this though. This book really helped when I was trying to start my little guy on his fitness journey. http://ow.ly/jCzM40

Those people just don't understand. They probably don't even have a cat.0 -
Your story touches me. As you can see (profile pic), I too have a similar issue. I'll send you a PM. My little Jabba needs some help too, coming at 27lbs.

Safe weight loss can be done, and your goal doesn't sound too crazy, don't listen to them! hOw fluffy is pop tart? maybe ifyou shave the fur off that will help?0 -

I cannot believe how rude and emotionless some people seem about this. Overweight pets have problems just like overweight people. This is not entirely the owners fault. Sounds like the owner did more for this cat than most people would have to keep his friend around as long as he could. It is certainly better that the overweight cat had someone to love and care for him than to possibly never have a home at all like some pets out there. Our animals friends are not with us nearly as many years as we would like them to be sometimes. As people we know how hard it is to lose weight, it will be no different for the cat. Can't we just show some support here for both of them???????0
