Need to pout...

Ok, I consider myself to be a middle of the road diet and exerciser. I know more that a lot of newbies on here, but I am not a personal trainer, nor a nutritional expert or scientist/biologist etc. So I know what most of the responses (if any) will be to this little tirade, but here goes anyway.

On Friday, I weighed in at 144.4lbs (a new low for me for many many years :D) and whilst I said to myself that I wasn't going to log calories, I wasn't going to go overboard, nor was I planning on logging my 'exercise' for the long weekend. The intention was to do lots of walking and eat what I felt like.

Over the course of the weekend, I didn't eat terribly (but because I didn't log, I could be kidding myself), and we did a helluva load of walking. (I wanted to see how much in one day and on Saturday it was nearly 1000 calories of walking 2.5mph via runtastic!) And on Monday I admit I did eat quite a lot, but was confident that the exercise over the Fri/Sat was sufficient to at least not go over too much.

Anyway, weighed myself this morning and I PUT ON 4LBS!! 4?!?!?!?!? Really??

Grr. Going to weigh in again tomorrow, which is my official weigh in day, but I still won't be happy if it still says 4 gain.

Yes, I know: your body can fluctuate that much at any time, you might have been retaining water, you might have eaten waaaaay more than you expected. Did you drink enough water (probably could have drunk more)? Have you measured yourself? etc etc.

I know I shouldn't be hung up on what the scales say, but I haven't been able to shift my mindset from that to only seeing the diff in the mirror and going by that and the tape measure instead, but I am still really disappointed. I was certain walking for a total of 7 hours over two days (more than I would normally) would have made the slight over eating Friday/Sat/Sun a bit more even. Monday, I can definitely blame on some of that, but it was to be expected, but not 4lbs of it though!

*sigh* Rant over.

Get rid of your scale. Now. Your clothes are the best gauge of your success.

There might be many reasons why you've gained weight:

You are using more hair products
    You really need to pee
    You are wearing bigger shoes
    You are pregnant
You have a lot of change in your pockets
    You are retaining water
You have a Texas-sized belt buckle
    Your scale is broken

However, if you haven't eaten 14,000 calories in the last 2 days, then you haven't gained four pounds of fat.

Well you didn't log any food... so you really have no idea what you ate. You probably had a ton of sodium.

As far as fretting over a minor increase, I do this all the time. The important thing is to remember where you are at in the scheme of things. If you can look at yourself this time last year and say that you have progressed, then you are doing it right. It doesn't really matter what the scale says.

But I totally understand where you are coming from. I have been doing this for 2 years this month, and I'm still obese. But I'm still farther a long in my progress than I was last year, and that really does count for something!

I'd say that if you ate things you didn't normally eat, most of it is probably fluid retention.
  • Im going to tell you something... THE SCALE IS THE DEVIL... I go off of how I look rather than how much I weight... I refuse to "Depress" Myself by getting on that thing more than once a month.

Biggest misconception: exercise will make up for a bad diet.

Now, as others have mentioned it's unlikely you gained 4 lbs of fat. It's probably mostly water. My question is, why do you feel the need to not log on the weekend? You can fit everything you eat, plus some room for snacks/treats, within MFP (as long as you work out of course).

You need to spend more time on your diary and less on the working out part. Lot's of people who are overweight go to the gym. They never get the eating part right and so they never lose. It's just a lose-gain-lose-gain treadmill.

As stated in another post it's probably from all of the sodium from the holiday weekend....

Drink LOTS of water and just get back to your routine that works for you...in time you'll bounce back.

Start taking measurements as well...don't rely 100% on the scale...it can really ruin your day if you let it...TRUST ME BEEN THERE!

    Best of luck!

I have this idea ( my personal opinion ) that when you exercise your muscles hold onto water until such time and they repair. To me that is why when I work out I don't see immediate results. It normally takes a few days until I see a drop in weight, and that is only if I have been eating well.

I just want to note that drinking water doesn't really help get your sodium levels right. The OP needs to eat some fruits and vegetables. Only potassium balances out sodium. Having the right balance between the two is what helps the body dispense of unnecessary water. Adding water to a body already retaining it just keeps the balance out of whack.

I know how you feel. I went over on calories by a lot for the first time since I joined MFP on Sunday (as in, for the first time, last week my calorie average was over my goal because of how much I ate Sunday by a total of 9 calories) but I also worked a brutal 10 hour shift. Every muscle in my body ached and I didn't stop moving for 10 hours. Then Monday my scale weight was up three pounds and today it's up another pound. I know that it's all waste and water but I still feel a little pouty about it.

Nothing to do with stick with it and wait for the weight to drop back off.

It is really disappointing to have the scale bounce around like that. You KNOW it has to be something besides calories eaten. I had this happen to me recently...not a gain for the week..but, one day I weighed and was showing a 2 1/2 lb loss...a decent lost I thought for the week and then the next day (which was my weigh-in day) I was only showing a 1/2 lb loss for the week...ugh! I knew i had NOT eaten 7000 calories to gain 2 pounds. Don't really know what causes these fluctuations..yes...water retention will..but, I don't generally retain water...way pass the monthly thing... So, just hang in there.."do the next right thing" and it will come back off! It is okay to have a rant if you feel like it...relieves tension.. Just don't stay in that place..pick yourself up and trek on toward health and fitness.

You are correct. Water is stored in the muscles as glycogen. If you work your muscles past the point of exhaustion, the body will store extra glycogen for a few days, just to be sure it won't be needed again any time soon.

I know how you feel. I've been pouting all morning. But I know there are several reasons for my 2 pound gain and hopefully by the end of the week I'll be back on track. I can't let it stop me from my goal. If this is going to be a "lifestyle" then I need to quit pouting and get back on the plan!!! There will always be ups and downs.

This always helps me out of a funk: "I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday..."

I would imagine after all the walking that your muscles are inflamed and/or retaining water. Take a rest day and drink lots of fluids. Four pounds is not a big deal. I fluctuate four pounds in one day. Eat right, exercise, be patient. Those are the rules. The scale is not your friend. Judge only by what you see in the mirror, how your clothing fits and how you feel.

I do usually log all the time, but this was the long Easter Weekend, and we were away, and so I chose not to log anything.

As I said in my post, I know all the responses, so thank you all for reiterating what I already know (although I didn't know potassium balances sodium...interesting!). I will getting back to normal today. Hopefully I will be able to get over the scales thing soon.

I ran into the same issue. I weighed 144.4 on Friday or Saturday and yesterday I "weighed" 147. It happens. I ate a lot over Easter but I know it's not enough to make me actually gain 3 pounds. I was back to 146 today. If you feel that your weight will be off on your weigh in day then don't log it because it's not really a gain.
