Herniated discs?

Hi all!
I was wondering if anyone else out there has any herniated discs? My hernias are most certainly the result of my weight and sometimes it's very painful for me to move, still, if I don't move, then I can't lose weight...very sad, vicious cycle... I decided to get up and Zumba anyway today - not as fluid as I was in the past, but I'll take what I can get -- but I know I'll be hurting later (infact, I've got the aspirin ready).
What I'd like to know is if anyone has any advice on back strengthening exercises for people like me. Or if anyone has any advice in general on the best types of work-outs.
Thanks

You need low impact activities. Zumba can be adapted, as long as you don't jump or hop, at least until you have built up some strength.
Swimming and water aerobics are the best, because the water relieves the weight pressure.
Biking is another good option, but you need a good bike and you have to adjust the handle bars to be higher than usual so that you can keep your back straight.
Be careful with walking - long walks, especially with long strides, can put a lot of pressure on your disks.0 -
Walking can do that? Really? Thanks for the information because I had no idea. I've heard that swimming and water aerobics are good, but unfortunately not an option at the moment, so I guess I'll have to adapt the zumba. Thanks a lot.0

i developed one during my deployment in afghanistan, i started to deadlift and my back pain went away.. also swimming is great!0

I work in an orthopedic surgeons practice specializing in spine surgery so I see a lot of that. The docs recommend swimming, biking, and eliptical workouts. Also yoga is great, especially Bikram Yoga, which has a whole spine strengthening series built into the session.0

Thank you all for the responses. I'll keep everyone's advice/comments in mind.0

What is 'deadlift'?0 -
I am feeling challenged; today is day one, and my back hurts like never before. But I believe it's necessary for me to keep building on this.0

I have the same injury. I do yoga poses. Camel stretches and cat pose are popular for this jury.0 -
