I've been taking zoloft for the past month, I've been tracking what I eat and not going over maintenance, but recently, over the past 5 days, I've all a sudden gained 5 pounds? What is up with that? Any ideas??

HAH i gained a ton on zoloft. when i started i was 112 lbs. I maxed out at 189 and i was taking the max doseage. when the dose was lower, I would lose weight.
If you gain more than 10lbs, tell your doctor to switch. I am on Pristiq now. I havent noticed any weight gain.0 -
I work for a Dr. and unfortunatey with these type of drug weight gain is a side effect, I have seen girls gain 50 lbs in a couple months. Im sure if you keep up with tracking your food and not having many feeding frenzies you shouldnt gain more than you have from the medication0

I'd give it another few weeks to make sure it isn't just a random fluctuation. If you stay at that weight or gain another couple pounds, I'd talk to your doctor and ask if you can switch to a different medication.0

From what I've heard, SSRI's such as Zoloft are notorious for causing weight gain. If eating less and exercising more do not help, I would talk to your doctor and/or mental health professional about it. I wouldn't take advice from an internet forum for something like that.0

Just curious what is the max dose? My doctor just started me on it. I have never been on these kinds of meds before and they originally started me on something else but the side effects were worse than the cure. So presently I am on Zoloft and he said that it had very little side effects.0 -
I have always wondered if the weight gain is from eating more because the patient feels less depressed, or a chemical reaction that slows the metabolism.
Maybe someone knows?:flowerforyou:0 -
Having worked with mentally ill pantients and psychiatrists, most psychotropic meds unfortunately cause weight gain. It could be a combination of both you are now eating the way you should and are gaining weight, and metabolic changes from the meds. Since you just started them, you might wait afew weeks to see if yourweight doesnt stabilize once your body gets used to the medication, and you are on your therapeutic dose level (they usually start you on a lower dose and gradually increase to the appropriate dose for you). If you continue to gain weight at that rate, absolutely consult your doctor, and they can adjust your dose or switch your medication. You probably should just call them anyway since you are concerned-- a pharmacist can have a wealth of information as well. They can tell you if that is normal.
All that aside, I can gain 5 lbs overnight of just water weight, so it could be that...0 -
200mg is the highest if I remember correctly. The only side affects I had besides the weight gain was headaches in the very beginning, and this weird electric sensation when I would turn my head to the side. Weird I know.lol0
