If i go to the gym and burn 500 calories, then eat 1200 calories a day for 6 days a week is that okay? I will eat my net calories up too 1200, and i will take a rest day one day a week. does this sound like a good plan and will it be effective? any advice?

Honestly? I couldn't survive and continue to work out on a 1200 calorie net. It's likely well below your BMR. You don't look like you have much weight to lose, so a slower weight loss (with more calories, like TDEE-15% or 20%) makes more sense.0
-
1200 is too low for most people. You should figure out what your BMR is and your TDEE is and eat in the middle. My BMR is 1560, TDEE is 2300 and I eat 1700 a day. I have 20 pounds left to lose.0
-
You are aiming for a very low weight - is there a reason for this?
I'm 5'2 would be very thin at 107.
Edit - I'm also eating 1600-1800 a day so yes 1200 is too low for you.0 -
I think it is important to use their guidelines from your personal information. Too few calories and your body will hold on to fat because it thinks it is starving. Be careful!0

Thank you everyone, i just calculated my BMR and it is 23260
-
Ignore the TDEE hype - just do it. You'll lose weight. Promise.0
-
Instead of losing more weight maybe you should try to add some muscle - you seem to be at a healthy weight right now - so maybe it is the fat% you want to change, and doing some strength training could help that.0

And to the OP: if that's currently YOU in the workout clothes. I'd say: it's time to stop losing weight.0 -
No to be completely honest I am asking this, because this is the first time in my life I have been this light. I was 110lbs, but what happened was. I got to 115lbs the healthy way, then got so excited about getting so close to my goal, i started eating less and less, and working out more and more, i got to 110. then gained 4lbs back because I was eating normally again. I want to do it the right way this time though, so i can keep the weight off and feel good about myself. knowing i didn't take the easy way out is important to me. I have horrible low self esteem and always have. I am working on that and finally excepting that I wasn't being healthy was something i wanted to change. this is why i am asking for help0

that was me at 110 or 109, I think. I gained a little more back, it shows alot though because I am short and have a small frame0 -

well to be honest I wasn't sure, thats why I am asking0 -

HAHAHAHAHA  Agreed. Hype? Seriously? Its not hype its science. *rolls eyes* That in place of a road map link is a great great source. Also, there is information available on what healthy weights are for people depending on their heights and other factors.
Don't be so concerned with the number on the scale as opposed to your body fat percentage. I know a gal who is 5'5" and weighs 165 and wears a size 2 because she lifts heavy and is sculpted like a greek goddess, seriously its insane.
So all in all, read that article, figure out a healthy weight for your height, eat enough and I suggest lift heavy and you will be set for success!0 -
Try to follow what mfp says. It's what I've done in the past. You should be over 1200 calories especially after burning 500 calories.0
-
You are 20 and in college, I guarantee you need more than 1200 every day just to do what you do all day even without the exercise. Enjoy it, fuel it, live it!
When you are old and tired and unemployed like me you can consume 1200 and not always eat exercise calories back. :laugh:0 -
It's good to be active, but definitely eat more. In your pictures you look thin enough but with 700 calories net you're on the path of destruction. Eat more! and do not worry about gaining weight. You won't - if you stick to your TDEE (and honestly log everything you eat and do).0
-
I'm just shy of 5'1" and I'm currently 107.6. My BMR is 1200 (lucky me). While I have a number in my head (104), I'm really going for how I look. I'm more toned now than I have been of late. It is hard when you're smaller b/c your numbers are lower. I eat back enough of my exercise calories to make sure that I net my BMR. It's hard some days, but I aim to do it. I don't want to run into issues when I'm doing maintenance. I see you're majoring in a related field.....what do the "text books" talk about?0

Eat closer to your TDEE which must be the 2326. Try scoobie's calculator for start because it is easier. http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/
So eat at maintenance calories for a month to recalibrate or whatever it is called your metabolism. Then do a TDEE-10% to go down to 110. You can exercise and do some strength training also. The important thing is that you eat healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle.0 -

what I am afraid of is since I was eating a smaller amount of calories is that I ruined my metabolism. I am majoring in a related field, I am studying to be a gym teacher for k-5. To be honest I haven't taken a course yet involving any type of health or exercise. I am getting maths and electives done right now. I am only in my second semester.0 -

Oh I donno, well you? Let's ask Taso:Not necessarily, as starvation mode is a overused/abused terms. But there is a high probability that it will hinder your long term success.
