I don't usually have a sweet tooth, but recently I have been having mad sugar cravings.
Any tips on easing them, or what i can eat to relieve it?
I have been having Chocolate Nesquik and Almond Milk when it gets bad.. that is NOT good

What time are the cravings occuring? If it is shortly after you eat (1-2 hours) part of the issue could be that you are thirty and need more water. Also if it is a late night sugar craving than your body is tired and its trying to tell you that you need more carbsfor energy.0

eat more carbs
eat more sugar
Try one of them and see what happens.:flowerforyou:0 -
I'd like to hear more on this also... I all of a sudden have been having them too... I used to never do sweets... now I'm craving them all the time....
Edit: BTW try eating fruits lower in calories but somewhat fill in that sweet tooth0 -
For me, the sugar cravings come AFTER I have already eaten sugar (i.e. when my blood sugar starts to drop from the high), I usually eat a peice of Fruit. For me, that shuts off the craving and gets my blood sugar back to even state.0

I sometimes chew fruity gum.0

Hard to tell without seeing your diary. I know, for me, the more carbs (refined - bread, pasta, potatoes, etc.) I eat, the more I crave sugar. The only way to get rid of them (in my experience) is to cut sugar and simple carbs out completely for 3 days. The cravings will then go away. It's rough at first, but once the cravings are gone it's relatively simple. The trick afterward is to continue to eat healthy by limiting carbs to complex carbs (brocolli, sweet potato, other veggies, etc). (I have my macros set at <75g carbs and 25-35g sugar).0

Make sure your diet has lots of slow carbs: that means whole grain everything, beans, legumes and vegetables. Don't drink juice or soda, if you really want some orange, eat the fruit. Or eat some berries, they are good for you.
Unless you are eating too little, food with low GI will help you get a more even blood-sugar. This means you avoid peaks and drops, and it should help you manage the cravings.0 -
Eat fruit. Natural sugar, and gives you that sweetness you crave.
I have also used cans of Redi-Whip when things like this happen late at night... filling, and sweet. A squirt or two in the mouth, and you are good to go.0 -
Stop eating sugar - break the sugar addiction.0

Fruit, fruit and fruit. =] also I love the new dessert delights flavors of "Extra" gum
It tastes JUST like mint chocolate chip, lemon squares, strawberry shortcake ... it helps in a pinch until you can make a good choice!0 -

If you are getting mad sugar cravings 1-2 hours after eating - it's not thirst! Take it from someone with Reactive Hypoglycemia (a bowl of oatmeal and an apple had me shaking like a leaf and starving - for more sugar - I was becoming diabetic on the healthiest version of the standard amercian diet - and no it's not genetic). Your body is telling you "I only know how to burn sugar" and sugar burns up after a couple of hours. You have lost your metabolic flexibility. Your body ability to burn fat has atrophied due to a lifetime high carb diet.
If you are getting mad sugar cravings in the evening. Same thing.
Slow carbs, complex carbs, blah blah blah. The body breaks all disaccharides down into monosaccharides (i.e. simple sugars) to be absorbed.
(you can ignore the Paleo part of it. That's not the point I'm trying to make)

Only eat what you can pick, dig or spear. Mostly spear.
(I have numerous links on my Profile. You are more than welcome to go through them)
Good luck!! I hope you kick them. It's an ongoing battle for me. The only way to kick a sugar addiction is to get rid of the sugar (it affects the same brain pathways as opiate drugs - hence the cravings.)

For some people eating sugar just makes them crave more sugar. It doesn't matter if that sugar is in fruit, starchy veggies, etc. It doesn't matter. I have fruit and it can send me on a downward spiral. I envy the people that can turn up their nose to sweet stuff.0 -
I have the same problem, sugar is my addiction. I really sweet stuff & i battle with my sweet addiction almost every day.
Try yoghurt, fruit or ice tea... it does help @ times
Also try peanut butter & apples or bananas ... really yummy0 -
Eating other carbs will feed the craving, bread, pasta, rice, tortillas, chips, white potatoes. Anything along those lines will make you crave sweets. My suggestion is avoid these things and your cravings will diminish.0

Agreed. If it's after dinner, you could try something like a medium apple. If you want something more "dessert" like, you can microwave sliced apple w/ some cinnamon (cinnamon will help stabilize your blood sugar as well).0
-
I like the microwave apple/cinnamon thing.
My sugar cravings come straight in the morning, between 7 and 10, i'm always craving, before and after breakfast, and occasionally in the late afternoon, and in the evening.
Also, I have just been told about putting peanut butter on apple? Good idea?0 -
I've heard that if you quit something for 21 days then you break the habit. Give it a go and see what happens.0

For me, a little bit of dark chocolate (>70% cacao), about 1/4 of a serving, kills sugar cravings and hunger pangs for an hour or so. But, I have to just let it melt in my mouth. Eating it quicker isn't as effective.
You could also try eating some nut butter (any kind). In general, monounsaturated fats help you feel more satisfied for longer, which might help. You could even add a little chocolate to that. It would probably satisfy for quite a while. I will say that cutting out most of the processed foods - it's ridiculous how much sugar sneaks in there - has helped curb my sweet tooth a lot. Oddly enough, trying to avoid salt has done the same. It's like I needed to alternate sweet/salty throughout the day.0 -
I never eat salt excessively - i eat clean and dont cook with it.
My friend has just told me Dark Chocolate, Brazil Nuts and Brocolli curb sugar cravings
Obviously a small amount of dark chocolate, right?!0
